Chapter 37

Erin’s POV

The two glasses I was holding shattered to the ground, alerting the attention of everybody in the restaurant, including Henry and Susanna.

They both turned to stare at me with wide eyes; Henry with more concern and Susanna with more humor.

My heart was beating heavily in my chest as I stared between the two of them.

I couldn’t have heard them correctly.

Did she just say she was pregnant?

With Gavin’s baby?

“I… I’m sorry…” I said, turning away from them quickly and hurrying toward the bathroom.

Suddenly, my stomach was turning itself outward and I wasn’t feeling so good.

“Erin?” I heard Kelsey from behind me; though, her voice sounded distant.

I didn’t turn around or stop moving.

I was pleased that my stomach waited until it was the closed compacity of the stall before it gave out. I hunched over the toilet and released its contents.

Deep breathing, I tried to steady my rapid heartbeat.

I heard the clicking of shoes on the hard surface, entering the bathroom, making my entire body freeze.

I wanted to die of humiliation.

I thought for a moment that it was Kelsey coming to check on me, but I realized quickly that whoever it was they were wearing platform heels and I knew Kelsey was wearing sneakers.

The clicking stopped and was replaced with the sounds of running water.

Whoever was out there, was washing their hands nonchalantly like they couldn’t smell anything.

She was quiet for a moment as the faucet turned off and I heard the paper towels being ripped from the dispenser.

“It must be shocking for you,” I heard Susanna’s voice outside the bathroom stall. My heart fell into my stomach. It took everything I had not to throw up again. “To find out that the man you love is expecting a child with another woman.”

I didn’t respond to her; I wasn’t sure what to say. I couldn’t play it off like I didn’t care. Not after the scene I just made.

“I’m just glad that Gavin doesn’t have to be cursed with an ugly child,” Susanna continued with a sly chuckle.

“Congratulations,” I managed to muster. “I’m sure you two will be incredible parents.”

“Yes, we will be,” Susanna agreed.

I heard her walking toward the bathroom door and then she paused.

“I hope you realize now that whatever you and Gavin had, are over. Our story is just beginning and I hope you can respect that.”

She opened the door and then left.

If she was so adamant about being with Gavin, then why was she talking to my husband about taking full custody?

Oh, goddess! Henry!

I couldn’t even imagine what he must have been thinking at that moment.

I left the scene so suddenly and without a word to him.

I wiped my mouth before flushing the toilet.

I managed to pull myself to my feet and leave the bathroom stall. I was feeling all sorts of lightheaded, but I only had a couple of hours left before work ended.

I could gain enough strength to get through it.

I washed my hands and rinsed my mouth out.

When I left the bathroom, I wasn’t expecting Henry to be waiting for me in the hallway. He looked worried, but when he saw me, he sighed in relief.

“I can explain,” he said right away before I had the chance of saying something.

“Explain what? Explain why my husband is speaking to my ex’s girlfriend about her pregnancy?” I asked, trying to keep my voice low.

I didn’t want to cause another scene.

“I wasn’t sure how to tell you,” he admitted; but I wasn’t sure I believed him.

“It couldn’t have come up during one of our many arguments these last few days?” I asked with fury rising through me. “How long have you known?”

“She only told me yesterday when she came into my office and asked for my help.”

“How do you even know her, Henry?” I asked.

Out of all the years, I’ve known Henry, he has never even mentioned the fact that he knew Susanna personally.

“I’ve represented her father in the past,” he explained. “I helped him keep his business running during some troubling lawsuits and claims made against him. I’ve grown fond of Miss Susanna and—”

“You’re fond of her?” I scoffed, shaking my head in disbelief. “I can’t believe you’ve given me so much crap about my relationship with Gavin when you’re doing the same thing with Susanna…”

“That’s not what’s going and you know it,” Henry shot back. “What I have with Susanna is completely professional. You and Gavin on the other hand…”

“There is no me and Gavin,” I interrupted. “Susanna made that perfectly clear.”

“Good, as she should have,” Henry said in return. “You need to face it that they are together.”

“I have faced it,” I said, taking a step away from him. “I don’t want to talk about this anymore. Especially not here.”

“I’m sorry to bring this to your work. It was tasteless. I’m not sure why I did it this way. Maybe a part of me wanted you to know the truth, so I—”

“Blindsided me?”

His face fell, but he didn’t deny it.

“We won’t stay. I’ll take her somewhere else,” he finally said after a long pause.

“That’s probably best.”

He looked at me for a moment longer before turning away. I could feel the hesitation before he left, but not before long, Henry and Susanna were gone.

I got some curious eyes from my coworkers and from Kelsey, but I paid them no attention. I continued my work as if nothing had happened.

By the end of the night, I was honestly surprised there were no messages from Gavin. I thought for sure that once he found out about the pregnancy, he would be blowing me up.

I wondered how long he had known the news before today.

I brushed the thought out of my mind, not wanting to drive myself any crazier than I already was.

I shoved my phone into my pocket before clocking out and leaving.

The night air was brisk and sent a chill down my spine as I wrapped my arms across my body to keep warm.

I picked a bad day to forget my coat.

Just as I was walking to my car, which I kept in the back lot toward the shadow region, I felt a warm and thick fabric wrapping around my shoulders.

It was someone’s coat.

I whipped around quickly, prepared to fight any attackers when I stared up at Gavin’s startled face.

“Easy,” he said, narrowing his eyes. “It’s just me.”

I wanted to punch him even worse now. He could see this on my face and his frown deepened as he took a step back.

“I’m sorry for just showing up, but I needed to see you.”

“Whatever you have to say, I don’t want to hear it, Gavin,” I muttered. “It’s been a long day and I just want to go home.”

“I understand that, but I just—”

“I’m not in the mood, Gavin,” I hissed. I took his coat off my shoulders and threw it back at him with a force that it took him back. “I just got into an argument with my husband and it’s completely your fault. You shouldn’t have come back into my life

“You don’t mean that…”

“Yes, I do. Just leave me alone. You and Susanna are great together. So, go be with her.”

This time, he gently grabbed my arm, stopping me before I walked away.

“What are you talking about? I came here to tell you that I was ending things with her officially…”

I paused, the hairs on my neck standing tall.

Ending things with her?

Gavin wouldn’t do that if he knew she was pregnant.

This only meant that he didn’t know.

I turned to face him, trying to keep the tears from spilling from my eyes.

“Maybe you should talk to her before you decide anything,” I murmured, not able to meet his eyes.

“I’ve already decided. I was only with her because I was told she would make the best Luna for my pack and her family are very well-respected and rich. But that’s not what I’m looking for… not anymore. Not since you came back into my life and—”

“You have no idea what’s going on…. Do you?” I said finally meeting my eyes.

He rose his brows at me.

“No,” he answered. “What’s going on?”

“Susanna is pregnant, Gavin. You’re going to be a father.”
