Chapter 40

Erin’s POV

I drove straight to Gavin’s packhouse; I didn’t even care if I’m spotted by those in his pack. This was way too important to not tell him about it right away. He needed to know what he was up against.

As soon as I entered the packhouse, I froze.

Standing before me was a very angry Susanna.

Gavin’s POV

Gavin could smell the scent of outsiders from miles away. His pack was usually the most protected; out of all packs, he had the most gammas, and he had the strongest force. Nobody would dare to invade his territory and rummage for supplies while Gavin was in charge.

Yet, somebody was.

As soon as word got out that there was a pack invasion in the area, Gavin knew he needed to be on the scene and assess the situation for himself.

Gavin had the biggest land around the kingdom, so it took a little while to reach the point of invasion. He traveled in his wolf form along with his comrades, including his Beta.

Ahead of him, he could see the wolves from the Darkmoon pack.

They were the blackest wolves in the kingdom. Their thick, razor-sharp fur was the color of midnight, and their eyes were dark green. Even their auras were black.

Their Alpha, Bane, was the strongest and the fiercest amongst his men. He stood tall and proud in the center of the dark wolves, growling, and revealing his razor-sharp teeth, which resemble the blades of a knife.

Gavin doesn’t often have encounters with Bane, but he couldn’t stand him.

“Why are you here?” Gavin asked, loud enough for all of Bane’s men to hear.

“It’s come to my attention that you have something we want,” Bane said; his tone was dark and threatening. “Or rather, you have someone we want.”

“I don’t have any from your pack. I would know it.”

“I didn’t say they were from my pack. They aren’t even from yours. But you still have them. She’s powerful and we want her to join us.”

Who the hell were they talking about?

“You can pretend you don’t know what I am talking about all you want. But I assure you, we will get what we want. Once we do, we will be the most powerful pack in the entire kingdom,” Bane said.

He began to turn away; it was clear he didn’t come here to fight today. It was just a warning. But Gavin honestly had no idea what he was talking about.

“We will be back to get what we came here for,” Bane warned over his shoulder.

Whatever they were after, they weren’t going to get it.

Gavin would make sure of that.

Erin’s POV

“You’ve been lying,” I said between my teeth; I had to admit that I wasn’t expecting to encounter Susanna on my own like this. I thought Gavin would have been here so I could show him the proof. “You aren’t pregnant.”

“Yet,” Susanna said, an icy look in her eyes. “But that doesn’t mean I won’t get pregnant. I’m trying everything I can as of right now.”

“I have the proof of your lies, Susanna. Once Gavin finds out the truth, he won’t want anything to do with you.”

This only made her laugh; she shook her head and brushed her perfectly manicured fingers through her hair.

“And what makes you think that he would believe a word you say?” She asked, batting her long lashes in my direction. “I had another procedure done today. So, I very well could be pregnant. What would he think if he saw you treating the mother of his child so poorly?”

“You aren’t the mother of his child,” I hissed, pressing my lips firmly together. I had the proof in my back pocket; there was no way I was going to present it to her. Knowing Susanna, she would try to destroy it. “You are just a liar, and you roped my husband into your mess.”

She rolled her eyes, folding her arms across her chest.

“Oh please. Whose idea do you think it was?”

No.

She was lying.

She had to have been lying.

Henry wouldn’t do something like this.

“He was sick of you fantasizing over your ex and I was sick of you always being around. So, we came up with a plan to keep you two apart. I’d say, this is working like a charm,” Susanna continued with a laugh.

“Henry would never do that. He might not have liked Gavin, but he wouldn’t have—"

“That just shows how little you know about your own husband,” Susanna interrupted. “Are you really even married? I’ll be honest, I was shocked when I found out that the well-known and handsome lawyer was your husband. I never imagined such a thing considering how you look. I’m still kind of in disbelief.”

“What is it that you want?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at her. “Why can’t you just leave Gavin alone?”

“Because, unlike you and Gavin, Gavin and I belong together. We are from the same world. I’m an empire queen basically and he’s the empire king. Together, we make one hell of a team and I’m not going to let a lowly waitress ruin that for me.”

“You are delusional if you think for a second that Gavin won’t see through you,” I said, taking a step away from her. “Once I tell him the kind of monster that you are…”

“You aren’t going to tell Gavin anything because he’s not here,” Susanna shrugged. “He had business elsewhere, so he took off for the afternoon.”

“Then, I’ll find him!”

“You aren’t going anywhere,” Susanna hissed.

At that moment, I watched as she reached into her back pocket. I braced myself for whatever she was grabbing.

She pulled out a long blade. I wasn’t intimidated by it though. I’ve been trained for battle and I knew I could take her if I wanted to. I had sworn against using any type of force since leaving the Moonshadow organization though.

I clenched my fists, getting ready to use my abilities to defend myself. The blade was pointed at me; I waited for her to make the first move.

“Now that I think about it, you might be right,” Susanna said with a small frown. She withdrew the dagger and kept it facing upward, examining it curiously. “There might be a chance that I can’t get pregnant at all. That would be unfortunate considering he’s asking for proof that the child is his. I can’t give him proof if there’s no child…”

Gavin wasn’t believing the child was his?

I didn’t know why that brought me a sense of relief.

He wasn’t one to be easily fooled.

“Although, I’m close to a doctor that could help fake some results. But how long can I really keep that act up? He would start questioning if I kept my perfect thin figure.”

“Lying to him isn’t the answer,” I tell her firmly. “Just come clean and tell him the truth.”

“Oh, but where’s the fun in that?” she asked with a pout. She was still examining the blade curiously before she glanced in my direction. “You know what would be really fun though? If the jealous ex-girlfriend corners the pregnant current girlfriend out of jealousy and does everything she can to make sure this baby is never born.”

“What?” I asked, knitting my brows together.

A smile spread across Susanna’s lips.

I couldn’t have been less prepared for what was about to happen next.

She turned the dagger to herself and plunged it into her stomach.
