Chapter 55

Erin’s POV

Staring at the note, I was in disbelief.

Was he talking about my abilities to manipulate water and my former member status with the Moonshadow organization?

I had never spoken to Bane up until today, so how would he know that information about me? My heart was beating rapidly in my chest as I stared at the note.

I quickly shoved it into my apron pocket and finished cleaning his table. We were close to closing and once I was able to get out of work, my first thought was to call Henry. He would know exactly how Bane would find out such information and who he was.

He was the only one I could trust to talk to, but I was also aware that he didn’t want to speak with me. Of course, I couldn’t say anything about this to Gavin because then I would have to tell him that I’m a part of the Moonshadow organization.

What was I going to do?

I swallowed my pride and grabbed my phone out of my locker in the back of the restaurant. Once I said my goodbyes to Kelsey, I headed toward my car, bringing Henry’s number up.

It went straight to voicemail.

I tried it again, but it went straight to voicemail again.

Where the hell was he?

Henry’s POV

“They are after Erin?” Henry asked in disbelief. “She’s been retired for so long. Why would they be after her?”

“Because she’s the strongest,” Theo answered.

“She’s out of practice,” Henry protested; he didn’t want to believe that Erin was in this kind of danger. Not again.

“Maybe so, but that doesn’t mean she’s any weaker. She was the one who basically defeated them the first time. Or so we thought,” Theo explained. “I tried to get her to return to the organization. It might be the only way to protect her. If she knows what she’s up against and can fight them on her own terms. But she refuses to come back.”

“Did you tell her she’s in danger?” Henry asked. “If she knew—”

“It won’t make a difference. She’s adamant about living a normal life with a boring husband,” Theo said, shaking his head before he added, “No offense.”

Henry only rolled his eyes.

“Maybe not. She left me.”

“Left you? You’re her partner. She can’t leave you,” Theo reminded him.

“Her ex-boyfriend is back in the picture,” Henry explained.

There was a moment of pause while Theo processed that information.

“Gavin Pierce…” Theo said, shaking his head with dismay written all over his face. It was no secret around the organization that Erin and Gavin were once an item. “That explains why they have their eyes set on her again. Gavin is a mystery for everyone… including Slayers. They’ve been watching him for a long time. That’s most likely how they found Erin again after she was laying low for so long.”

Fury began to rise in Henry; of course, this was Gavin’s fault. Why wasn’t he surprised?

“So, it’s Gavin’s fault that Erin was spotted and now targeted by the Slayers…” Henry seethed.

“Most likely,” Theo confirmed. “They’ve been watching him for a long time… we all have been. As soon as Erin started hanging around him, she became more known and watched as well.”

“You’ve been watching Gavin this whole time as well?” Henry asked, mildly hurt that this information was kept from him. “I brought it up to you recently that Gavin was a danger and you brushed it under the rug.”

“Because he’s not the one who’s a danger,” Theo explained. “There’s someone else amongst his group that is a danger and it’s up to you to figure out who it is.”

“Someone in his group?” Henry asked while raising eyebrows. “What makes you think it’s not Gavin? I didn’t think anyone else in his pack had abilities.”

“That’s where you are wrong, Henry. Someone else has abilities and they are using them to make him look like the bad guy. You need to figure out who it is and put a stop to it. But you also need to do what you can to protect Erin. Whether she wants you to or not.”

Gavin’s POV

The hospital crumbled to the ground. There wasn’t much salvaging. Many lives were lost, and it was because of someone with abilities.

For right now, his pack was settled. They still were thinking that it was Gavin that set the fire, but they weren’t rushing to attack him since he made a public statement about it. They are giving him a chance to find the real person responsible.

The survivors of the fire, including Susanna who wasn’t harmed at all, were at another hospital being treated.

It was going to take a while for this hospital to be rebuilt, but Gavin already paid for the damages, and it shouldn’t be long before they start the reconstruction.

Gavin was the last one to stay behind and finish cleaning some of the rubble off the streets. The sun was beginning to set in the distance and the moon was rising high in the sky. It wouldn’t be long before the restaurant closed and Erin would be on her way to the packhouse.

They didn’t really get a chance to speak last night after she put out the fire. By the time he retuned home, she was already tucked away in bed and fast asleep. He thought about waking her so they could discuss things; she seemed so distraught and exhausted after using that much of her abilities and he wanted to make sure she was okay.

But she looked so comfortable in the guest bed that he didn’t want to disturb her. He figured he would just speak with her in the morning. He went to his own room and slept for the night; but when he woke the next morning, just before he went to make a public statement to his pack on a live broadcast conference, he saw that Erin was gone.

He figured she must have gone to work; he wasn’t sure why he was thinking she would have taken the day off.

He should have known better.

He shook his head, brushing the thought out of his mind as he continued to clean the streets.

Once he was the last one standing, he decided it was time for him to go home and see Erin. He could finally speak to her about what happened the night before. Make sure she’s actually okay.

Just as he turned to walk away from the scene, he found himself once again, faced with Bane.

Only this time, Bane was alone.

“What are you doing here?” Gavin asked through a tightened jaw.

There was a nonchalant humor in his eyes and a grin that spread across his narrow features.

“I had a nice little chat with your girlfriend,” Bane said coolly, keeping his eyes on Gavin’s.

Gavin tensed; whom could he be talking about? Erin?

“You know, the waitress that you seem to be so fond of?” Bane continued; he was talking about Erin.

“What do you want with her?” Gavin asked with rising fury.

“I already told you; we want her to join us. She’s incredibly powerful and would do my pack some good.”

It was Erin that he was after? What makes her think she’s that powerful? How did they even know about her?

“Leave Bane,” Gavin ordered. “You aren’t welcome here and you aren’t getting anything or anyone. Leave her out of this.”

“I don’t think I will,” Bane said shaking his head. “Because I know exactly what she is and what she can do. She’s incredibly powerful and I’m not leaving you alone until I get her.”

“Fuck off,” Gavin seethed, he started to walk away, but Bane’s words from behind him, stopped him in his tracks.

“I know it was Erin that put out the fire at the hospital,” Bane said, his tone darkening. “I know exactly what she can do. You can’t hide her. Not anymore.”
