Chapter 59

Gavin’s POV

A woman of fire.

That was what the teenager had referred to the woman in the red cloak.

“She emerged from the fire?” Gavin asked to clarify.

The young girl nodded almost gravely; a dark haze fell over her vision as the memory surfaced in her mind.

“Yes… it was like the fire was dancing around her body. Not actually touching her, but also not avoiding her either. It was being created for her… or maybe by her,” the girl said thoughtfully. But then she disappeared, and the fire stayed…”

She shivered at the thought.

Gavin nodded, understanding.

“You’ve been very helpful,” Gavin said to her with gratitude. “What is your name?”

“Amelia,” she answered with a small smile.

“It’s nice to meet you, Amelia,” Gavin said, bowing his head slightly at her.

“You as well, Alpha.”

Erin’s POV

The game had ended over an hour ago and we’ve been doing nothing but watching TV for the following few hours.

I kept asking if I could go outside and get some fresh air but kept saying it was probably better if we stayed inside per Gavin’s orders.

If I had to hear the words “per Gavin’s orders,” one more time, I was going to lose it.

I was so sick of staying in this packhouse without anything to do or anyone to talk to besides Bea Seth. It seemed most of the workers in the packhouse had instructions not to speak to me, or at least that’s how it seemed.

They all avoided me like the plague.

Seth had tensed from beside me and I glanced over at him, frowning. He seemed like he was listening intently to something.

I knew he was getting a mind link.

“Is it Gavin?” I asked, searching his face curiously.

He glanced down at me.

“Can I trust you to stay here for a few minutes? Gavin needs me to look into something,” he said.

I nodded as Seth stood to his feet quickly.

“I won’t be long. Don’t think about leaving. The gammas have a strict order to keep you inside the packhouse.”

“Then, why did you ask if you could trust me?” I asked, raising my brows.

“Because I don’t want you to give the gammas any grief,” Seth said with a mocking smile.

I rolled my eyes, folding my arms across my chest like I was some kind of child.

“Fine,” I muttered.

He laughed, shaking his head as he walked out of the door, leaving me alone with my thoughts.”

It’s been over 24 hours since Gavin enforced a lockdown on me, and I haven’t even thought to look at my phone. I called Henry a bunch of times yesterday morning and it went straight to voicemail.

I wondered if he called me back at all or if he was still avoiding me.

I stood to my feet and made my way up the stairs. My phone was kept on the nightstand next to the guest bed. When I glanced at the screen, my heart fell into my stomach when I saw there were no missed calls or texts from Henry.

I couldn’t help but feel disappointed.

I couldn’t believe he still hasn’t called me back. I couldn’t believe he didn’t want to speak to me at all.

He was supposed to be my partner and now it was like he really was a stranger.

I opened our message thread; we hadn’t texted in a while. The last text I sent him was “I love you.” Which was sent way before we went our separate ways.

I decided to send him another message.

Henry, I’m getting worried. Please call me. I hope you are well.”

I reluctantly pressed send and put my phone back on the nightstand, sighing in defeat.

There was a small chance he’ll text me back, a bigger chance that he won’t though.

I stood to my feet and made my way out of the room; as I walked down the hall, I paused outside Gavin’s office door.

Gavin wasn’t here, and neither was Beta Seth.

It’s been a little while since Beta Seth left and I wasn’t sure when he was coming back. I knew Gavin was investigating the fire and the reasoning behind why Bane was after me. But I wondered if he kept any information that he’s gathered in his office.

I shouldn’t be as curious as I was; but at the same time, old habits were certainly hard to break.

I knocked on his office door just in case somebody was inside. But when nobody answered, I opened it slightly, picking my head into the dark room.

It was so dark, I had to squint to see properly.

When I saw nobody, I decided to turn on the light.

I gasped when I saw how messy his desk was.

He had papers scattered across his desk.

I closed the door behind me as I stepped into the office, not wanting anyone to see me in there. Gavin was usually very put together and organized, so to see all these papers scattered across his desk was surreal.

I made my way to his desk and glanced at the papers.

There were pictures and documents on Bane. It seems that Gavin is following him, trying to figure out what he wants and what he’s after. Which makes sense.

As a shuffled through more of the documents, I saw that he was trying to figure out who started the fire at the hospital. It seems he was trying to tie it together with Bane’s appearance.

Did he think it was Bane that started this fire?

I supposed it was a possibility.

But did that mean that Bane had special abilities?

The thought sent a shiver down my spine; he was one wolf I wouldn’t want to see with special abilities.

I frowned when a picture of Susanna with a question mark appeared in one of the photos on his desk as well.

He was curious about her too.

There was a small memo next to her photo saying that she was unharmed entirely in the fire.

I found that to be strange; she wasn’t burned at all? How was that possible? The fire nearly burned the hospital to the ground.

As I continued to shuffle through the papers, I paused when I saw a document that had the Moonshadow organization name on top of it.

Listed, were a few known people that have abilities that Gavin had found out.

I was one of them.

Except my name was circled with a question mark.

I furrowed my brows together as I realized he was trying to figure out who the members of the organization were.

My heart fell into my stomach.

“He’s suspicious of me?” I asked my wolf.

“It seems so, yes,” she agreed.

I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat, just as the door of Gavin’s office opened.

I gasped when Gavin stood before me, narrowing his eyes at me.

“What the hell do you think you are doing?”
