Chapter 68
Gavin’s POV
There was something different about Erin, something that Gavin was liking and yet was so curious about. There was a fire in her eyes when she pieced together the different clues she had gathered. It was like this was a passion of hers; or a long-lost passion that she had forgotten about and was just now regaining.
She was even more beautiful when she was passionate about something.
But what made her so passionate about this?
It was like she’s done this type of thing many times before. Danger didn’t seem to frighten her.
She certainly wasn’t the same Erin he knew back in high school, and he wasn’t displeased by it. But he wished she would act with more thought and not jump into action, putting herself in such danger.
“The woman in the red cloak could be the leader of the Slayers,” she whispered, trying to process the new information. “Or a vessel. There’s no way for us to know for sure.”
Gavin had to admit to himself that the thought worried him. What could the Slayers possibly gain from all the mayhem they have caused? Burning the hospital to the ground, killing pack members without abilities, and using wolves as their vessels.
It was all too unreal.
Gavin was having trouble wrapping his mind around it as well, but he needed to remain calm to not worry Erin any further.
“We have to find out who she is,” Erin finally said, shaking her head as she gazed up at him.
Gavin frowned, narrowing his eyes at her.
“We aren’t going to do anything. I’m going to find out who she is and put an end to her if it’s the last thing I do.”
“You can’t do it on your own,” Erin protested, putting her foot down.
She was cute when she thought she had a choice.
“I didn’t say I was doing it alone; I have my gammas.”
“They don’t have abilities like we do.
“My abilities alone will be fine,” he assured her, trying to keep his tone even.
“They are powerful. You don’t know them like…” her voice trailed off and the color drained from her face.
His frown deepened as he searched her features; a crease forming between his brows as they knitted together.
“Like what?” He urged her to continue.
“I just heard that nobody could defeat them except for maybe the Moonshadow clan. They have done it before.”
Her voice had got smaller and now he was driven with suspicion.
“They say the Moonshadow had defeated them, but they are back so clearly they didn’t defeat them fully,” Gavin argued in return.
“That isn’t fair—”
“Why are you defending them?” He asked her quickly.
He was pretty sure he already knew the answer to that question; he was starting to think that Erin had been a member of the organization all along. He had some thought about it toward the beginning when he realized she had abilities; both she and Henry gave him reason to believe they could be partners in the Moonshadow organization.
But the thought was later dismissed the more he hung around Erin and realized she was thriving for a simple life.
But now the thought is resurfacing, and he can’t help but wonder.
“I’m not defending them,” she said after a beat of silence. “That just proves how powerful the slayers are if the Moonshadow can’t even get rid of them completely.”
She was right; the Moonshadow was the most powerful organization in the world and if they couldn’t fully defeat the Slayers, then maybe he was no match. But that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to try.
He was going to give it his all and if he dies at the hands of the Slayers, then at least he died protecting his people.
All these acts of violence have been happening around his pack and to his pack members. He looked more guilty the longer the criminal runs free.
He was vowing to clear his name and keep those around him safe.
Before he could say anything in response to Erin, his phone started to ring in his pocket. He groaned, annoyed as he grabbed his phone and glanced at the screen.
Susanna.
There was a part of him that wanted to deny the call, but the Alpha part of him worried that it could be an emergency.
“Hello?” He said into the phone.
“Gavin, it’s Susanna…” she said in a soft tone as if he didn’t already know that. It sounded as if she’s been crying. “I need to speak with you. Can you come to the hospital?”
“I’ll be there in a minute,” he said, hanging up the phone he turned to Erin who stared up at him with curiosity in her eyes. “I need to leave.”
“Who was that?” She asked.
He thought about telling her the truth, but he didn’t want her to be bothered by the fact that he was going to see Susanna in the middle of their conversation. Then again, she didn’t really have a right to be upset.
“Just business,” he decided to say.
She didn’t look like she bought it though, however, she didn’t argue. She watched as he disappeared from the room.
…
Gavin got to the hospital quickly and when he reached Susanna’s room, she was curled up in bed with her head lowered and tears flowing down her features.
“What is it?” He asked once he entered the room.
She was alone, and telling from her face and the sadness she was portraying, she must have gotten bad news.
“The shock of everything finally settled,” she whispered hoarsely. “I almost died, Gavin.”
“You were unharmed,” Gavin reminded her, arching one of his brows. “The fire barely got you.”
“But it could have if it wasn’t put out when it was,” she said, peering up at him through her tear-filled eyes. “It could have been really bad. I could have lost my life…I could have lost everything.”
“I know it’s shocking, but just be glad that it didn’t come to that. You are okay, Susanna,” he assured her, keeping his tone low and compassionate.
She was quiet for a moment, staring down at her fingers.
“It made me think a lot about things… and I don’t want to waste another moment. Gavin, I want to be with you. I want to be your Luna. We could be so good together—”
“We already talked about this,” he said, furrowing his brows together.
“I know… you don’t want me. But you could learn to love me back. You must admit that I would make the perfect Luna for you. Everybody already loves me. I’m a well-known fashionista and incredibly rich and popular. I would make the perfect Luna to be on your arm during the Alpha convention. It’s only a couple of months away and—”
“I’m not worried about it,” he said quickly. “I’m sorry Susanna, but things with us are over. I don’t wish to come off as cruel and hurt you. But you must know that after everything you had done, I can’t overlook any of it.”
She was quiet for another beat as more tears filled her eyes.
“But I did it for us…”
“You did it for yourself,” Gavin murmured, folding his arms across his chest. “You did it for selfish reasons.”
“That’s not true!” She argued. “Everything I do is for us… I love you, Gavin—”
“Don’t make this any harder than it has to be,” Gavin said, taking a step away. “Is this why you called me here? To convince me to give you another chance?”
She searched his face with her icy blue eyes for a moment before her gaze hardened. The tears had stopped flowing and her lips were pressed in a thin line.
“I wanted to tell you that if you don’t take me back, you will lose my entire family and my followers as supporters. If you accept me as your chosen mate, you could have anything and everything you’ve ever wanted.”
