Chapter 78
Erin’s POV
“You don’t have a team yet?!” I shouted, staring at Theo in disbelief.
“We need to be trained for this kind of thing,” Theo said in return. “I have people, we just aren’t ready. Neither are you.”
“I’m more than ready, Theo,” I said, folding my arms across my chest. “The fact that they aren’t is concerning to me. We can’t wait any longer. We need to get the show on the road, today.”
“We have to be—”
“I know…we have to be smart about it. I’m sick of being smart about it. I want to go into action.”
“You need to take a step back,” Theo growled in a low and threatening tone as he stood slowly to his feet.
He was much taller and more intimidating than I am, but I wasn’t backing down. I was furious. If we didn’t do something about the Slayers and quickly, then Gavin would be running head-first into the danger zone, and I couldn’t allow that to happen.
Henry stood a little distance away from me with a mournful look in his eyes.
“You also need to calm down,” Theo said, keeping his eyes locked on mine. “This isn’t a game, Erin. We need to be smart.”
“I’m sick of hearing your excuses. It’s like you want the Slayers to take over and cause destruction!”
Theo slammed his fists on his desk, nearly breaking the wooden frames. I could see the flash of anger in his eyes and this time, I took a step away from him. I wasn’t going to mess with Theo any further than I had already.
“Training will start tomorrow; once we are ready, we will go in for an attack,” he said with finality in his tone.
“And what about Gavin? He’s going to attack them way sooner than that,” I complained. “We can’t let that happen.”
Theo looked at me for a moment longer before taking his seat.
“You are smart; you can think of something. I’m sure of it,” he said, a twinkle of humor in his tone.
It was taking everything I had not to lose control of my wolf and attack him right then and there. Henry could sense that and was by my side quickly, draping an arm through mine.
“We will figure something out,” Henry assured Theo. “If we see anything else, we will report back.”
“Keep an eye on that girl, Susanna,” Theo instructed. “I don’t trust her, and I don’t think she’s fully broken free from the Slayers.”
He said that last part nonchalantly while looking at his computer.
He agreed with Gavin.
I didn’t say anything in return; he wouldn’t like what I had to say to him. I could feel my blood boiling. We were supposed to be ready to attack the Slayers; I wanted to get rid of them once and for all, but the process kept being delayed.
But for what reason?
“You are out of practice,” Henry said to me as we made our way back home. I had just finished complaining about Theo and expressing my concerns. “You haven’t been a part of the organization in over 3 years. Things are different now; Theo is playing things smarter.”
“If I hear that term one more time…” I muttered, sitting on the couch.
I was pouting like a child, and I was fully aware that I was acting immaturely. But I just couldn’t help myself. I was over the top furious. Not to mention incredibly worried. I held my arms close to my chest and gazed at the ground.
Henry sighed and sat beside me, wrapping an arm through mine.
“I know you are worried,” he said in a soft and compassionate tone. “But Theo knows what he’s doing. If he’s not worried, then we shouldn’t be worried either.”
“But I am worried,” I said, shaking my head and lowering my tone. “A lot of people have already died. If we don’t work fast, even more people could die. I can’t let that happen, Henry.”
“I promise, we are going to do whatever we can to make sure that doesn’t happen. Now that you are back, the world is even more secure than ever. Let’s just relax tonight and then we will report to headquarters in the morning just as Theo instructed. We will train with the others and then find the Slayers together. We need to work as a team.”
I knew he was right, so I didn’t bother arguing with him. I gave him a faint smile and leaned my head against his shoulder.
I was glad to have him by my side again, however, my mind kept going to Gavin and my heart ached at the thought of him.
“How about I make us some dinner tonight?” Henry suggested. “It’ll be like old times.”
The thought of us returning to our old life together with our fake marriage seemed genuinely nice
“I would like that,” I said in return.
Henry stood from the couch and went straight to the kitchen. I curled up on the couch with my mind racing.
“Our mate will be in trouble,” Emily breathed, with worry clear in her tone. “We have to do something before he gets himself killed.”
“Nobody will listen to reason,” I said in return.
“Then make them listen, Erin… we can’t lose him,” she cried; there was a pain in her voice, and it tugged at my heart.
She was right; we couldn’t lose him… not again.
I grabbed my phone and turned it on. I had a couple of missed calls from Gavin from before he found me with Susanna and another missed call from Henry. That must have been when they found out Susanna was a vessel.
They must have been worried.
I went into my bedroom and looked around for a moment; I had a thought in my mind and if I were, to be honest, I didn’t think it was going to be a good idea.
in fact, it was a suicide mission certainly.
Henry would never forgive me, and Gavin would be furious.
Theo might even kick me out of the organization, but this was something I needed to do.
I grabbed my backpack and stuffed it with a few necessary items. Some gadgets from the organization along with a new set of clothing. I wasn’t sure how long I was planning on being gone.
I could smell the food from the kitchen being cooked and my mouth was beginning to water. It was probably better if I left after we ate, that way I didn’t do this on an empty stomach.
I grabbed my backpack and shoved it under the bed so Henry wouldn’t see it. I would wait until sundown. I’ll wait until Henry is either preoccupied with something else or sleeping.
But I couldn’t stay here.
Later tonight, I was going to find the Slayer Hideout by myself.
