Chapter 89

Gavin’s POV

“We are in the process of relocating your parents as we speak, Alpha. Do you want us to send you, their location?” One of the gammas asked in a mindlink.

“No,” Gavin answered, and it pained him to do so. “It would be better if I didn’t know where they were. The least I know, the better.”

“Are you sure? They have been requesting to speak with you.”

“Tell them it’s for their own protection,” Gavin ordered.

“Yes, Alpha,” the gamma said before ending the mindlink.

Gavin sat at his desk, rubbing his temples with his pointer finger and thumb. The picture that was sent to him remained on his desk.

Now the Slayers were after his family, and he had no idea what he was going to do to stop them. It would have been nearly impossible to stop them if the vessels couldn’t be detected and stopped. He had already tried to stop two of the vessels and that didn’t work.

Speaking of vessels, he made a mental note to check in with Susanna later in the evening.

The door of his office swung open and a familiar young girl, in her early 20s, stood before him. His heart fell into his stomach at the sight of her.

Her curly brown hair fell wildly around her narrow features, her dark blue eyes with long and dark lashes, narrowing at him as she pressed her red glossy lips in a thin line. She wore a heavy amount of makeup because she was a makeup artist and experimented with new styles on herself.

There was worry in her misty eyes; it was clear to Gavin that she has been crying and probably for a while.

Gavin was surprised to see her standing in his office; he wasn’t expecting her to arrive.

This girl’s name was Jill, and she happens to be Gavin’s younger sister.

“I haven’t been able to get a hold of Mom or Dad,” she cried, slamming the door of his office shut and sealing them both inside.

Gavin hadn’t been able to tell Jill anything that had been happening; mainly because she’d been so busy with her own stuff, and he didn’t want to worry her. But also because the less she knew, the better it would be for her.

So far, the Slayers, and his blackmailer, haven’t targeted Jill. There was a part of him that thought they didn’t even know she existed. He wanted to keep it that way.

“I’ve been blowing up their phones for weeks. I’ve been emailing. I even stopped by their house, and they weren’t home. It doesn’t look like they’ve been home…” she breathed, sitting down in one of Gavin’s empty chairs in front of his desk. “I know I haven’t been around… but I was thinking they’d be here waiting for me when I returned.”

“Mom and Dad love you very much, Jill,” Gavin assured her, trying to keep compassion in his tone and dismiss the wariness. Though, Jill could always see through him.

She rose her gaze to meet his; something wasn’t sitting right with her and Gavin knew she was going to get to the bottom of it.

“What happened, Gavin? Why are they not here?” She asked, keeping her eyes locked on his.

He wasn’t sure how much to tell her; he didn’t want to worry her or put her in any form of danger. Yet at the same time, he feels that he needs to put her in a safe home as well just in case they start coming after her.

Now that she’s here, she has a greater chance of being discovered.

“Gavin?” Jill said more firmly as she continued to pour her eyes into his. “What happened to our parents?”

“The Slayers are after them,” Gavin told her; he decided to leave out the fact about his blackmailer.

“What?” She gasped. “What could they possibly want with Mom and Dad? What did they do to get their attention?”

“They didn’t do anything other than being related to me,” he explained with a sigh.

“They are after you?” She asked, raising her brows. “Is it because of your abilities?”

“Possibly,” he confirmed.

There was fear on her face as she allowed that information to be processed.

“Where are they? Mom and Dad, I mean? Where did you put them?”

“In a safe house.”

“Where?” She demanded to know; she was starting to get angry now.

“I can’t tell you their location, Jill. It’ll put them in even more danger.”

“I need to see them for myself, Gavin.”

“I’m sorry, but it’s for the best. Neither of us can know where they are,” Gavin told her.

She gasped at his words.

“You don’t know where they are either?”

“We had to relocate them this morning because they were found. They are safe as we speak but it’s better if we both knew less information,” he explained.

She was quiet for a long moment as she allowed that to simmer in her mind. She stared down at her hands with a deepened frown and Gavin felt badly that he couldn’t give her the information that she was wanting.

“I think it might be better if you also went into a safe house. Just for right now,” Gavin suggested.

He knew it was an idea that his sister would hate.

Her eyes widened as she stared at his serious face.

“I can’t just disappear. I have a whole career and goals I’m working toward,” she said in return, shaking her head with dismay written all over her face. “And what about you? You are in even more danger if they are actually after you.”

“I’m the one who’s going to put an end to them.”

“You?” Jill nearly laughed. “Are you serious? You aren’t a Moonshadow member. You might be strong, but you don’t have the necessary skills to defeat the Slayers.”

“You out of anybody should know that I am more than capable,” Gavin argued back.

“It’s a suicide mission. Leave the hero work to the actual heroes and get yourself to safety.”

“Is there another reason why you came here other than to find Mom and Dad?” Gavin asked, folding his arms across his chest.

She frowned and narrowed her eyes at him.

“I missed you and I’ve been worried. I came here to see what was actually going on…” she said, lowering her gaze to her lap. “I should have called.”

Gavin sighed.

“We’ll set up a guest room for you and you can stay for as long as you want. But I highly suggest a safe house far from here. I don’t know what the Slayers are after what they are planning on doing, but I don’t want to take any chances.”

“I’ll leave in a couple of days,” she said with a shrug. “I’ll get myself to safety. I have a studio far from here; so far, they haven’t found me yet. I’m confident that I can stay in hiding.”

Gavin didn’t like that she was refusing his help, but he knew his sister was more than capable so accepted her response.

He stood from his desk, rubbing his sore head.

“I’m going to take a shower. It’s been a long day,” he muttered walking past her.

She watched as Gavin left the office. Just as soon as the door closed behind him, Jill heard Gavin’s phone ringing on his desk.

He left his phone?

She stood and grabbed the phone and frowned when she saw the name Erin on the screen.

The name sounded familiar, but she couldn’t put a face to the name.

She made the decision to answer his phone.

“Hello?”

There was silence on the other end, but there was also light breathing, so she knew this Erin girl was still on the line.

“Hello?” She said again, a little louder, into the phone.

“I… I’m sorry,” Erin stammered. “I must have the wrong number.”

She hung up before Jill could say anything more.
