Chapter 90
Erin’s POV
With a sore heart, I hung up the phone.
I leaned against my car, staring down at the screen.
It certainly wasn’t the wrong number; a woman answered his phone. But who? And why was she allowed to answer his phone so easily? Was he not concerned that it could have been me that was calling him?
I hated this feeling; a jealous pit formed in my lower abdomen, and I wanted to get rid of it. I shoved my phone into my pocket and slid into my car. My body was trembling from the frigid air.
I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, but I certainly wasn’t expecting a woman to be answering his phone. There was a part of me that thought about calling him back and asking him who that woman was. But another part of me worried that she would just answer his phone again.
It also wasn’t my business and I recognized that.
I bit onto my bottom lip to keep the tears from spilling out of my eyes.
I’m not sure how long I sat in my car for, but minutes passed and then I saw the hour mark change. If I didn’t return home soon, Henry would be worried about me. I promised I would be home on time tonight so we can gather some information during the night hours.
Just as I was about to drive away, my phone buzzed.
I froze, worried that it was Gavin texting me some lame excuse, but I saw Henry’s name pop up on the screen as a new text message.
“Going to be late tonight. Sorry.”
I sighed and turned off my phone; I wasn’t in the mood to respond to him right now.
I began to drive away from the restaurant; the moon hung over the night sky, shining its rays down on the empty streets and lighting a pathway for me as I drove. I didn’t often drive to work because I lived around the corner; sometimes I would travel in my wolf form and other times, during nice weather days, I would just walk and enjoy the peaceful outdoors.
But today it was frigid.
As I got closer to my home, something in the corner of my vision caught my eye and I slowed the car down to a near stop.
I saw a couple of people near a dark alley. I could see their dark shadows merging together against the brick building they were hanging.
I rolled down my window slightly so I could hear what they were saying. I heard a woman’s voice and a couple of men and the woman sounded as if she was in distress.
“Please just leave me alone,” she pleaded. “I was just going for a walk. I don’t want any trouble.”
“Then maybe you should have thought about that before you decided to travel alone, princess,” one of the men sneered.
I felt the earth begin to shake and the woman began to scream. It sounded like she had fallen to the ground and the two men began to laugh.
“I can see through her clothes, and she looks hot,” the other one said in a low and threatening tone.
Their voices were making my skin crawl.
He must have had the ability to see through things and the other one must have had the ability to cause earthquakes, or something of that nature.
This meant that they were part of the Killer organization because nobody from the Moonshadow organization would ever treat anybody like this.
I put my car in the park and quickly got out of my car.
“Don’t touch me,” the woman sneered, and it sounded like she made some contact as she swiped her hand in one of their directions.
‘You bitch,” one of the guys hissed, shoving her hard against the brick wall.
It sounded like the wind got knocked out of her lungs as she gasped for breath.
“You are making a huge mistake,” she murmured.
She was a feisty one and I admired that, but her attitude was going to get her killed. These guys weren’t messing around. If she was a regular wolf without abilities, she couldn’t protect herself properly.
“Do you have any idea who my brother is?!” She went on to say, which got me curious about who her brother was.
I reached them in time to see one of the guys pressing himself against her body, pinning her so she couldn’t move. She struggled against him, pleading to be released. She was a petite girl with wild curly brown hair and she wore skimpy clothing.
The guy pressing against her was riding up her skirt, revealing her thin pink underpants. I saw tears springing from her eyes. He went to kiss her, but she turned her head, gritting her teeth and his lips landed on her cheek.
The other guy was laughing and as he laughed, the earth shook again. I had to work hard to not fall over.
“Please…” she begged; her voice cracked slightly as she pleaded with them to stop.
I clenched my fists, unable to see this any longer. This time, I was the one causing the earth to shake. There were businesses surrounding us, which means there were water pipes beneath our feet.
The guy that was groping the young woman looked over at his partner and hissed, “Stop doing that!”
“I’m not doing anything,” the other guys said, staring at the ground with a frown.
That’s right. He wasn’t doing anything.
I was.
Just as they both turned and looked in my direction, the pipes under the ground burst and broke through the ground, drenching everybody including myself. I made the water swirl around the air and hit them in their faces. I could hear them gagging and choking as the water got into every hole in their face.
The young woman covered her drenched face and kept herself pressed against the brick wall, terrified about what was going on.
The two men continued to gag and cough; I forced the water to hit them hard, knocking them to the ground.
They were both trembling and fearful and when I figured they’d had enough, I stopped the water, allowing it to rest around them.
Only the sounds of them coughing filled the air; they were shaking fairly badly. Mainly because of the fear they felt, but also because it was incredibly cold outside.
One of the men finally spotted me standing before them and staring at them.
“W…What was that…?” He asked in a shiver.
“Leave…” I ordered. “And don’t return here.”
They both hesitated for a moment before they scrambled their feet and took off running in the opposite direction.
I sighed.
Well, that wasn’t very subtle.
Now I was drenched and I was going to have to explain what happened later to Henry.
The girl remained against the wall, shiver and frightened and then her eyes found mine.
“Are you okay?” I asked her, offering her my hand to help her get a stable footing on the ground.
She thought about it for a moment as if it was a loaded question.
“I thought they were going to have their way with me…” she said in a soft tone. “I was so scared. Thank you for saving me…”
“Of course,” I said to her, forcing a fond smile. “I couldn’t let them torture you like that.”
“You are very kind,” she breathed; her voice cracked through when she spoke, and more tears flooded her eyes. She bit onto her bottom lip, probably to keep from sobbing. “My brother was right…I shouldn’t have come out here. I thought I could handle things on my own, but I was wrong. I’m sorry for the trouble.”
She began to turn away and walk through the streets when I called after her.
“It was no trouble. Just be safe out there,” I told her.
“It’s certainly a crazy world we live in…” she said as she paused. “You have abilities? Are a part of the Moonshadow organization?”
“I’m not a part of any organization,” I lied. “I kind of just do my own thing.”
“My brother is like that too,” she said with a fond smile. “I’m going to go home now. Thank you again.”
“Oh, wait… what’s your name?” I asked before she traveled too far.
“My name?” She asked, turning to look at me. “My name is Jill…Jill Pierce.”
