Introduction

Lumina died once already — in a life that no longer exists, in the arms of a mate who wasn't looking, holding a son who never made it past five years old. When a necromancer named Janice offered her a way back, Lumina took it, and spent six months rewriting everything: saving Ollie, breaking the compulsion spell that had stolen Xenois from his family, uncovering the son she never knew was taken, and rebuilding a pack shattered by manipulation and war.

She thought she'd bought her family a future.

She was wrong.

The debt was never memories, or years, or power. It was her — every trace of her, unwoven from the lives she'd fought so hard to save. In her place: Sophia, restored to the family she was always meant to have, remembered as a devoted mate and mother, her cruelty erased along with everything Lumina sacrificed to expose it.

Now Xenois wakes beside a woman he believes he's loved since he was sixteen. His sons remember a mother who never once hurt them. And somewhere in a colorless place between what was and what will be, Lumina is still fighting — aware just enough to know something was stolen, not enough to remember what.

Some debts aren't paid. They're buried.

And some things buried don't stay that way.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

LUMINA

There was no floor beneath me, and yet I was standing.

That was the first wrong thing. The second was the color of the world—or the lack of it. Everything around me was gray, but not the gray of fog or stone. It was the gray of nothing. Like someone had erased the world and forgotten to draw it back in.

"Where am I?" My voice came out smaller than I wanted.

"Somewhere between," Janice said.

She was there suddenly, though I hadn't seen her arrive. She looked the same as she had in my dying moment six months ago—tall, still, her eyes holding centuries I couldn't count. She didn't look cruel. That was the worst part. She looked almost kind.

"Between what?" I asked.

"Between what was and what will be," she said. "It's easier to talk here. No distractions. No pack bonds pulling at you. No heartbeat to worry about."

My hand went to my chest without thinking. No heartbeat. She was right. I couldn't feel it beating at all, and the panic that should have come with that realization didn't arrive either. Everything here was muted, like I was underwater.

"Am I dead?" I whispered.

"No," Janice said. "Not yet. Maybe not ever, if things go the way I intend."

"Then what is this? Why did you bring me here?"

Janice tilted her head, studying me the way someone studies a puzzle they've already solved. "I told you I'd come to collect payment. Do you remember?"

"After Jerome," I said. "You said you'd wait until the conflict was finished."

"I lied," Janice said simply. "Or rather—I let you believe there was a choice about timing. There wasn't. The debt was always going to come due the moment it became convenient for me. Jerome was never really the variable. You were."

Fear crawled up my spine, slow and cold. "What do you mean?"

"I mean I've been patient," Janice said. "I've watched you build this life you weren't supposed to have. Watched you save your son, break Sophia's hold, bring your family back together. It was impressive, Lumina. Genuinely. Most people I send back squander the gift. You didn't."

"Then why punish me for using it well?"

"This isn't punishment," Janice said, and something in her voice shifted—not softer, exactly, but heavier. Like she was carrying something she didn't want to carry. "This is balance. You don't seem to understand that yet. Let me explain it plainly."

She moved closer, and the grey around us rippled like water disturbed by a stone.

"When I sent you back," she said, "I didn't give you a copy of a life. I didn't split the timeline into two branches, one where you die and one where you live. There is only one thread, Lumina. One. And you unraveled it and rewove it into something new. That takes a great deal of power. More than memories. More than time."

"Then what?" I asked, though some small animal part of me already didn't want to know.

"You," Janice said. "The payment was always you. Not your memories. Not years off your life. You."

The word hung between us, and I felt the floor that wasn't a floor tilt beneath my feet.

"I don't understand," I said, though I was starting to.

"You will," Janice said. "I'm going to remove you from the thread entirely. Not kill you—death is simple, death I could have let happen six months ago and saved us both this conversation. What I'm going to do is harder than death. I'm going to take you out of the story. Every place where you exist—every memory, every mark you left on the people who love you—I'm going to smooth it over. Like sanding down a scar until the skin remembers nothing happened."

"No." The word came out of me before I could stop it. "No, you can't—"

"I can," Janice said, and there was no cruelty in how she said it, which somehow made it worse. "I already am. This conversation is happening slower than you think. Outside, in the world you still think of as yours, it's already begun."

"Stop it," I begged, and I hated how fast I went from defiance to begging, but I couldn't help it. "Please. Take anything else. Take my memories, take years off my life, take my powers, take anything—just not this. Not my family. Not my boys."

"I understand this is hard to hear," Janice said. "But there is no version of this where you keep them and I collect what's owed. The debt isn't negotiable in the way you want it to be. It was never yours to spend on your own terms."

"Then why let me live at all six months ago?" I demanded, anger rising up through the fear now, hot and useless. "Why give me the second chance if you were always going to take it back?"

"Because you asked for it," Janice said. "And because part of me hoped you'd find a way to earn a different ending. You almost did, Lumina. You came closer than anyone I've sent back in a long time. But wanting something badly enough doesn't change what it costs."

"There has to be another way," I said. "Some other payment. I'll give you anything—"

"You keep saying that," Janice said, "as though you have something to offer that would matter more than what I've already decided to take. You don't understand your own worth in this equation. It was never about what you're willing to give. It's about what the thread requires to stay whole."

"Then let me stay and just—just be smaller," I said, grasping now, desperate. "Take away my involvement in things. Let me have not saved Ollie, not exposed Sophia, not found Riley—undo all of that if you have to, but let me still exist. Let me still be somewhere in their lives, even if it's smaller. Even if it hurts."

For the first time, something flickered across Janice's face. Not softness, exactly. But something close to it. Something that looked almost like regret trying to find a place to land and not finding one.

"If I did that," she said quietly, "the thread would still remember you were the cause. Do you understand? It's not enough to make you smaller. The thread needs to forget you were ever the reason things changed. Otherwise the debt isn't paid, it's just deferred, and eventually it comes due again, worse than before. I've made that mistake once. I won't make it twice."

"Whose mistake?" I asked. "Who did you do this to before?"

Janice didn't answer. Her jaw tightened, just slightly, and for one moment she looked less like an ancient, unknowable force and more like someone who had lost an argument with herself a long time ago and never quite recovered.

"It doesn't matter," she said finally. "What matters is you."

"It matters to me," I said. "If you've done this before—if there's precedent—then there might be a way to undo it. Someone might have found one."

"No one found one," Janice said, and the words came out flat, final. "That's how I know this works. That's how I know it's the only way."

I felt something break in my chest, a hollow crack that had nothing to do with the heart attack that had put me in a hospital bed two days ago. This was different. This was the sound of hope leaving.

"Please," I said again, quieter now. "My boys. Riley just started trusting himself again. Lake needs someone to explain the world to him when it doesn't make sense. Ollie—Ollie almost died once already because I wasn't paying close enough attention. If I'm gone, if you erase me, who checks his heart? Who remembers what to look for?"

"Someone will," Janice said. "The thread reshapes around the absence. It always does. Life doesn't stop because a single thread is removed. It just moves the pattern in a different direction."

"What direction?" I asked, terror sharpening every word. "What are you doing to them? Tell me."

Janice was quiet for a long moment. When she spoke again, her voice had lost whatever warmth it had carried before.

"There is a symmetry to this that I think you'll understand, even if you don't want to," she said. "The thread that gave you your second chance took something from someone else to do it. A person who was meant to hold a place in your family's story and didn't get the chance because you stopped her. I'm restoring what was displaced."

The blood drained from my face so fast I felt dizzy, even in this place where I didn't have a body to be dizzy in.

"Sophia," I whispered.

"She's going back into the space you took from her," Janice said. "Your family will remember her as they should have. As Xenois's mate. As the boys' mother. It will feel complete to them. It will feel like it was always true."

"No." I was shaking now, or the version of me that existed here was shaking, some deep tremor that had nothing to do with muscle or nerve. "No, she's dangerous, she manipulated him, she nearly got Ollie killed, she pushed Riley off a cliff—you can't give her that. You can't give her my sons."

"She won't remember any of that," Janice said. "Not the manipulation, not the cruelty. In this version, none of it happened, because you and everything you exposed will no longer exist to have exposed it. She will simply be a mother who loves her children. That's all anyone will remember of her."

"That's not mercy," I said, my voice breaking apart. "That's not balance. That's a lie you're building on top of my family."

"It's the only lie the thread will hold without collapsing," Janice said. "I'm sorry, Lumina. I mean that, even if you don't believe me."

"Don't," I said. "Don't you dare say you're sorry while you do this to me."

Janice didn't answer. The grey around us was starting to move now, slow and deliberate, like tide pulling back from a shore. I could feel myself thinning at the edges, not disappearing exactly, but losing definition, like a drawing being erased line by line from the outside in.

"Wait," I said, panic surging fresh and violent. "Wait, please, just—just let me say goodbye. Let me tell them—"

"You can't tell them anything," Janice said. "That's the whole point."

"Then let me remember," I begged, my voice cracking wide open. "Even if they forget me, let me keep something. Let me keep their faces. Please. Please don't take everything."

Janice looked at me for a long moment, and something passed behind her eyes that I couldn't name—not mercy, not quite, but adjacent to it. A concession she wasn't supposed to make.

"I can't promise you clarity," she said. "But I won't take everything. You'll have pieces. Fragments. They won't make sense most of the time, and they won't be enough to change anything. But they'll be yours."

"That's not enough," I said.

"It's what I can give you," Janice said. "Take it."

The grey rushed toward me then, fast now, faster than I could brace for, and I felt myself pulled apart at every seam I had—memory, sensation, the very sound of my own name. I tried to hold onto something, anything, and the only thing I managed to grab before the world went white was a single image.

Ollie's face. Five years old. Laughing at something I couldn't hear anymore.

And then even that was gone, and there was nothing but the gray, and somewhere far away, a life that used to be mine was closing over the space where I had been like water over a stone.
