Chapter 1
“Auntie,Please don't leave!” Peter Lawsky’s tears hit the back of my hand. “Today is my birthday!”
I crouched down and wiped the tears from his face. I love this child more than anything in the world, but I must leave.
“Peter, remember what Auntie told you. I’ll come back tonight for your birthday party.” I whispered softly, “I’m just going to pick up your gift.”
In the Lawsky family’s living room, the butler stood coldly by, seemingly eager to watch me leave in disgrace.
“Enough, Peter!” Eric Lawsky’s voice came from the stairs. “You’ll have to get used to life without her.”
He was impeccably dressed, still the business elite who made countless women’s hearts race. But only I knew, beneath that handsome exterior was the face of a beast, worse than any animal.
“The agreement has expired, Mr. Lawsky,” I straightened my back, meeting his gaze for the first time. “I will attend Peter’s birthday party tonight, as a guest.”
Eric’s lips curled into a mocking smile. “Daisy Webster, have you forgotten who you are? A dismissed nanny from the Lawsky family. What right do you have to attend a Lawsky family event?”
“Yeah, I’m just a nanny,” I smiled calmly. “But I promised Peter.”
I turned and left, Eric’s cold voice ringing out behind me: “Don’t come back and embarrass yourself.”
Sitting in the car, I took a deep breath. The driver silently handed me a phone and a document.
“Boss, tonight’s plan is ready. Lawsky Group’s stock has dropped for three consecutive days, and our short positions are already in profit.”
I opened the document. It contained records of Eric Lawsky’s recent business dealings.
“How’s the Alexander Group’s bid coming along?”
“As per your instructions, all the materials are ready. We’re just waiting for you to make your public appearance at the party tonight.”
I smiled. “It’s been eight years. It’s time for Eric to know that the person he despised the most will become his nightmare for the rest of his life.”
At six in the evening, I changed into a black evening gown and put on the Webster Group’s heirloom sapphire necklace— the only keepsake my mother left for my sister and me.
Eight years ago, Eric killed my sister for this necklace. Tonight, I’ll wear it as I return to the Lawsky family.
“Are you ready, madam?” Mason Lowes’s voice came from behind me.
He’s my contract husband and the only ally I have on my path to revenge.
Three years ago, I saved his life, and he gave me the chance to become “Nyx.” We both got what we needed, he got a tool to deal with family pressures as his wife, and I got my entry ticket to the financial world.
“Of course,” I turned to face him, whispering through gritted teeth. “I’ve been ready for eight years.”
Mason’s gaze fell on the sapphire around my neck, his expression complicated. “Daisy, remember, no matter what happens tonight, I’ll be behind you.”
“I know, this is just our deal,” I straightened his tie. “You owe me a life, and I need your identity.”
At seven in the evening, the Lawsky mansion was brightly lit, filled with luxury cars. When Mason and I entered the hall side by side, all eyes were on us.
“Isn’t that Daisy? What is she doing here?”
“Oh my God, she’s Mason Lowes, the president of Lowes Group’s wife?”
“I thought she was just the Lawsky family’s nanny…”
Whispers flooded my ears, but I just smiled, linking my arm through Mason’s and walking gracefully through the crowd.
Eric stood in the center of the hall, his face pale. He clearly didn’t expect me to appear in this identity. And the woman by his side—Cindy, the current Mrs. Lawsky, a socialite who’d done anything to climb into the Lawsky family, was staring at me, wide-eyed in surprise.
“Peter, Auntie’s here.” I crouched down and pulled a small model airplane from the exquisite gift box. “Happy Birthday. This is the gift I promised you.”
Peter was overjoyed, hugging me around the neck. “Auntie, I knew you’d come!”
Just then, Cindy “accidentally” knocked over her coffee, spilling it on me and the gift.
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” she apologized, feigning innocence, but her eyes were full of satisfaction. “I didn’t mean to.”
The hall fell silent and all eyes on me.
I slowly stood, taking out a handkerchief to wipe the coffee stain from my gown. My voice was terrifyingly calm. “It’s fine, Mrs. Lawsky. Compared to the bloodstains from when Mr. Lawsky pushed my sister down the stairs eight years ago, this coffee stain is nothing.”
The whole hall felt like a bomb had gone off. It was dead silent.
Eric couldn’t take it anymore. He stormed over. “Daisy! What are you talking about? Security, throw her out!”
“Throw who out?” Mason coldly gripped my hand. “My wife is here to attend Peter’s birthday party with good intentions.”
“Your wife?” Eric sneered. “Mr. Lowes, do you even know who she is? A nanny who signed a foster agreement for money, a woman after the Lawsky family’s wealth.”
I gently pushed Peter away, not wanting him to hear such filth.
“Mr. Lawsky, it seems you’ve forgotten,” I smiled, but my eyes were ice cold. “As of today, I’m no longer anyone from the Lawsky family. I’m the CEO of Webster Group, the wife of Lowes Group’s president, and the bidder for Alexander Group’s latest project.”
Eric’s face finally changed. “Alexander Group? Impossible. They only allow three companies to bid, and my group has…”
“Oh, you mean this?” I took a document from my handbag. “The official invitation from Alexander Group was delivered to my office just two hours after you kicked Duke Group out.”
Eric stared at the official seal on the document, his face turning ashen. “Who the hell are you?”
“I’ve told you,” I leaned in closer, lowering my voice. “I’m Daisy Webster, the woman you deceived eight years ago, the woman who watched her sister die, and the ‘aunt’ who took care of Peter for eight years.”
I turned to face the guests. “Ladies and gentlemen, tonight I have an announcement. Webster Group will fully enter the real estate and financial sectors, and our first project is the southern district development rights for Alexander Group.”
The hall erupted in applause, while Eric’s face was the darkest it had ever been.
“Peter, Auntie has to leave,” I softly told the stunned Peter. “I’ll come see you after I finish my work.”
I linked arms with Mason and walked out of the Lawsky mansion.
“That was too risky,” Mason said in the car. “You shouldn’t have provoked Eric in front of everyone.”
I shook my head. “No, this is just the beginning. I want him to know, I’m back, bringing with me all the truth and evidence.”
The phone rang, and the screen showed the latest updates on Lawsky Group’s stock—plummeting.
The hunt for “Nyx” had officially begun.
