21, The rescue

Tite

Watching the bitch of a sweet butt crawl all over Nash, looking like she was seconds away from dry humping his leg, hurt. It felt like having a piece of my soul ripped out. I needed to get away and distract myself. It was lucky I spotted Jane standing at the bar, looking a little lost. I fled the table and walked up to her.

“Hi. I was hoping you would stop by,” I told her. She gave me a relieved smile.

“Essme said she would be here as well, so I thought I would be brave,” she said.

“It’s nice to have a friend here. How about we grab a beer and join the others?” I suggested.

“I don’t know. Should we get a table of our own maybe? There are some free ones in the corner over there,” Jane said, pointing at a corner table that was almost in complete darkness. Then she glanced back at the table where I had come from and as I followed her gaze I saw it land on Lora. Lora and Nash had separated and she was trying to cling to him again. Nash was doing his best to avoid it by backing away with his hands up. It looked comical and I thought it was only fair to let him deal with the situation.

“Don’t be afraid of that bitch. Little will have your back and so will I. She has already pissed me off once tonight, it won’t end well for her if she does it again,” I told Jane.

“Um, Wolf doesn’t look that happy about what is going on,” Jane pointed out.

“He’s a big boy, he can deal with his own issues,” I said, turning to make sure we got a beer each.

“Are you sure about this?” Jane asked as we walked towards the table.

“I’m sure,” I told her. I watched as Lora slowly chased Nash around the table to the amusement of most people in the bar. It was funny, I admitted. I knew he only allowed it because she was a woman, and even though he wasn’t on my good side at the moment, I knew he wouldn’t lay hands on her or any other woman. As we came to the table, Little had already made sure there was a chair for Jane and I smiled at him. Then Nash’s eyes met mine, and I saw the silent plea in them. For a moment I thought about ignoring it. It would serve him right after what he had put me through today. But then I sighed and changed my mind. He was my mate, even if he wasn’t a good one, and my wolf felt the possessiveness rise as she watched another female hunt our mate. I was an Alpha wolf and there was a limit to what I could accept. I put my beer down on the table and took a step in behind Lorna and grabbed a good hold of her hair.

“That’s enough. The man said no, don’t use his kindness to not hit you in the face because you have boobs against him,” I told her as I pulled her back by her hair.

“Bitch!” she screeched and her hands went up to my wrist.

“So you said. Now get a fucking grip or I will hurt you,” I said.

“I will fucking end you!” she continued. She was trying to turn around to face me, but my grip on her hair made it difficult unless she was happy with losing some of it.

“Tite.” Nash’s words sounded like a warning. He was defending the sweet butt after I had just saved him from her?

“Fine. You deal with her then. But don’t ask for my help if you don’t want it,” I told him and released my grip on Lora’s hair and gave her a push forward. She wasn’t expecting it and as she had been trying to pull away from me, the push had her stumbling forward for several feet before she regained her balance.

“That’s not what I…” Nash tried to say, but he didn’t finish his sentence. I just shook my head as Lora glowered at me. I sat down at the table and decided to ignore all the men and got a conversation started with Jane. At first Jane kept glancing at Lora. But Lora stayed at a distance. Apparently she had learned something at least. I didn’t doubt she was planning her revenge. Nash had taken his seat at the table as well. He looked to be in a bad mood, but if that was because he didn’t get to have a go with Lora or if he was the object of a lot of jokes around the bar, I didn’t know. Five minutes after the peace had settled, Essme joined the table and Doc went to get her a beer.

“Look who I found at the bar,” he told us as he came back. Shadow was walking with him and we all greeted him. He took a chair from another table and I scooted my chair closer to Jane to create a space between Nash and me. Shadow gave me a look, which I ignored. He sat down and looked at Nash.

“So,” Shadow said.

“What?” Nash asked, sounding pissed. Shadow ignored the warning in his friend’s voice.

“I heard you got chased around this evening and had to be rescued by our newest member. Couldn’t you have waited with the entertainment until I got back from my run so I could have witnessed it?” Shadow teased.

“Fuck off!” Nash hissed, sounding ready to kill.

“Testy. Tite, next time don’t rescue him. He is far too grumpy,” Shadow said and all the men, except for Nash, around the table laughed. Even Jane smiled.

“I’ll take it under consideration, but I hate to see the defenceless suffer,” I told him. I glanced at Nash and he stared back at me. I sighed internally. It felt like we had been doomed from the start. Maybe I shouldn’t have insisted on coming here. I should have made a clean break and moved on with my life. It would probably have been the best for both of us.

“Are you okay, Tite?” Essme asked. I tried to muster a smile.

“Yeah. Just a little tired. I guess the road trip and being in a new place is catching up to me,” I said. I could feel both Nash and Shadow watching me. Shadow understood my mood better than the rest of them and he did what he could by drawing the attention away from me and starting to tell the story of the latest run he had been on. I was grateful for it. My phone dinged and I took it out. It was a message from Nash, which was odd as he sat at the same table.

Nash: Do you want me to make an excuse so you can leave? It looks like you can use some sleep.

I read it three times. I hated that it melted my heart, the simple gesture of kindness had my wolf giddy. He was a nice man, he would do the same for anyone, I told myself.

Me: Thank you, but I will stick it out a while longer. I still have something I need to talk to Shadow about.

As I put my phone away, I saw Lora sitting at the bar, whispering with her two friends. That couldn’t be a good sign. Maybe I should take Nash up on his offer and get out of here while I didn’t have a body count for the evening. I didn't know if I could take another round of Lora.
