Chapter 12 The Heart Awakens
The roar from the depths shook the entire dungeon like the world itself was cracking open. Stones rained from the ceiling. Silver chains snapped and whipped through the air. Kael stood rigid in front of his mother and sister as a wave of ancient primordial energy surged upward from the newly opened chasm.
The air grew thick and heavy. It tasted of old blood moon essence and something far wilder. Something that predated even the lycan bloodlines.
Vanya pressed closer to Kael her hand still gripping his arm. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. The love she felt for him burned so fiercely it hurt but fear twisted right beside it. “What is that thing? It feels… alive. Like the keep itself is breathing.”
Queen Marra’s face had gone deathly pale. She clutched Kael’s other arm for support her frail body trembling. Tears glistened in her amber eyes as she looked at her son. “The Heart of the Moon. The source of all our power. It was sealed centuries ago because it grew too hungry. Too conscious. Your power has awakened it Kael. It senses you.”
Kael’s silver-blue eyes narrowed toward the chasm. The void inside his chest responded with violent excitement. It pulled harder now drawn to the massive ancient energy rising from below. Sweat rolled down his temples. His hands shook as he fought to keep the hunger contained. “Then I will face it. Both of you stay behind me.”
Logan’s laughter echoed from the far side of the chamber where he and the Oracle had retreated. The usurper king’s face was bruised and bloody but his golden eyes shone with mad triumph. “You have doomed yourselves! The Heart will devour the void inside you and everything else!”
The Oracle slumped against the wall breathing weakly. “Fool. You have no idea what you have unleashed.”
A massive shape began to rise from the chasm. First came the head. Enormous. Wolf-like yet twisted with glowing crystalline runes across its forehead. Its fur shimmered between deep crimson and midnight black. Eyes the size of dinner plates burned with pure lunar fire. The creature was easily thirty feet tall at the shoulder and kept rising.
The primordial beast let out another roar that slammed into them like physical force. Vanya staggered back clutching her ears. Queen Marra dropped to her knees covering her head.
Kael planted his feet and pushed back with his own power. Violet aura clashed against the ancient moon qi creating sparks of opposing energies that lit up the entire dungeon. The strain showed on his face. His jaw clenched tight. The void inside him screamed to absorb this new colossal power but he held it back with everything he had.
“I will not let it touch you,” he said through gritted teeth. His voice carried raw determination and a fierce protective love that surprised even him.
Vanya rose again despite the pressure. She shifted into her partial wolf form silver-gray fur rippling across her body. Blood still seeped from the wound Logan had given her but she ignored the pain. “We fight as one. No more sacrifices. No more being torn apart.”
Marra pushed herself up beside her children. Though weak from years in silver chains her eyes burned with queenly fire. She placed one hand on each of their backs channeling the last of her royal essence into them. “My children. My blood. Together we are stronger than any seal or beast.”
The Heart of the Moon fully emerged. Its massive paws crushed cells beneath it as it stepped into the chamber. Ancient chains that had once bound it hung broken from its neck and limbs. It fixed its burning gaze directly on Kael. A low intelligent growl rumbled from its throat as if it recognized the Divine Void Dantian.
It charged.
The ground split with every step. Kael met it head-on. He thrust both hands forward and unleashed a massive Spatial Collapse. The vacuum sphere slammed into the beast’s chest slowing its momentum. Cracks appeared across its crystalline runes. Chunks of primordial flesh dissolved into violet particles.
But the Heart was different. It roared and shattered the vacuum with pure overwhelming qi. Its giant paw swiped at Kael catching him across the torso. He flew backward crashing through several iron cells. Pain exploded through his body. Blood sprayed from his mouth.
“KAEL!” Vanya screamed. The sound tore from her throat raw with terror and love. She dashed forward claws extended and leaped onto the beast’s leg slashing furiously. Her attacks barely scratched the ancient hide but they drew its attention.
Queen Marra channeled golden moon essence toward the Heart trying to weaken its connection to the keep. “You will not take my son from me again!”
Logan and the remaining guards attacked from the sides hoping to finish them while the beast was distracted. “Now! While the void is occupied!”
Kael pushed himself up from the rubble. His body screamed in protest but the sight of Vanya and his mother fighting for him ignited something deeper than power. A fierce burning will to protect. He wiped blood from his lips and charged back into the fray.
He leaped high and slammed both palms against the Heart’s shoulder. Divine Void Absorption. Violet tendrils dug into the primordial beast drawing its ancient energy into him. The rush was overwhelming. Power flooded his dantian like a tidal wave. For a moment pure ecstasy filled him. Then the hunger surged dangerously.
The void wanted everything.
Kael felt it reaching toward Vanya and Marra again. He roared in defiance forcing the energy to stay contained. His veins glowed violet under his skin. His eyes blazed brighter. “I control you!”
The Heart of the Moon reared back in pain and fury. It shook its massive body throwing Vanya off like a flea. She hit the ground hard rolling several times before stopping. Pain flared through her side but she forced herself up immediately eyes locked on her brother.
Logan saw the opening. He darted toward Queen Marra with his blade raised. “If I cannot have the throne I will end your bloodline here!”
Vanya intercepted him at the last second. Their weapons clashed violently. “You will not touch her!”
Kael split his attention. He kept one hand pressed against the Heart absorbing and redirecting its power while using the other to send a vacuum pulse toward Logan. The usurper was thrown sideways but not before his blade grazed Marra’s shoulder.
Marra cried out in pain collapsing to the ground.
The sight of his mother bleeding snapped the last thread of Kael’s control.
The void exploded.
A massive dome of violet energy erupted outward. The Heart of the Moon staggered back roaring as parts of its body dissolved. Several elite guards vanished instantly. Logan barely shielded himself with crimson qi.
Vanya and Marra felt the terrible pull again stronger than ever. They clutched each other fighting to stay grounded. Vanya reached out desperately toward her brother. “Kael! Fight it! We need you!”
Tears streamed down her face. The love she felt for him mixed with terror at losing him to the very power that defined him.
Kael dropped to one knee in the center of the storm. His body shook violently. Blood poured from his eyes nose and mouth. The void had grown too strong too fast. It no longer saw his family as separate. It only saw essence. Fuel.
“I… won’t…” he gasped voice breaking with raw emotion. “You are mine. My blood. My reason.”
Queen Marra crawled toward him despite the pull. She grabbed his face with both hands forcing him to look into her eyes. “My beautiful boy. You were born scentless because you were meant for something greater. Let our love fill what the void cannot. Feel us.”
Her words her touch her tears broke through the hunger.
Slowly painfully the violet dome shrank. The pull on Vanya and Marra eased. Kael collapsed forward into his mother’s arms breathing raggedly. Vanya joined them wrapping her arms around both. For a precious moment the three of them held each other in the middle of destruction. A family reunited in blood and pain and love.
But the Heart of the Moon had not fallen.
It rose again larger angrier its crystalline runes blazing with renewed power. The ancient beast had tasted Kael’s void and now it wanted more. It opened its massive jaws and began gathering a colossal sphere of pure lunar destruction.
Logan laughed hoarsely from the shadows. “Yes! Destroy them all!”
Kael lifted his head from his mother’s embrace. His silver-blue eyes burned with exhausted determination and fierce familial love. He stood slowly helping Vanya and Marra to their feet.
“This ends now.”
As the Heart of the Moon unleashed its devastating attack and the dungeon began to collapse around them Kael stepped forward once more. The void inside him stirred again but this time it felt different. Calmer. Anchored by blood.
Yet deep below something even greater began to awaken. The true core of the Obsidian Keep. The origin point of the entire lycan empire.
And it was calling directly to the scentless god who dared challenge its heart.
