Chapter 13 Origin’s Call

The Heart of the Moon unleashed its fury. A colossal sphere of pure lunar destruction hurtled toward them blazing with ancient power that lit the collapsing dungeon like a second crimson moon. The ground split open in its wake. Walls crumbled. The air itself screamed.

Kael pushed Vanya and Queen Marra behind him. His body still shook from the earlier loss of control but something had changed. The void inside him no longer felt like a wild beast. It felt anchored. Warmed by the touch of family he had never known he needed.

“Stay behind me,” he said voice steady despite the blood still dripping from his nose and mouth. His silver-blue eyes burned with fierce resolve.

Vanya’s heart clenched. She wanted to stand beside him fully but her side wound throbbed painfully and her mother leaned heavily against her. Tears of frustration and love stung her eyes. “Don’t you dare die on us now Kael. Not after we finally found each other.”

Queen Marra gripped her son’s shoulder with surprising strength. Her amber eyes shone with a mother’s fierce protective love. “We are with you my child. Always.”

Kael thrust both hands forward. Violet energy erupted in a massive shield of distorted space. The Heart’s attack slammed into it with world-shaking force. The collision sent violent shockwaves through the dungeon. Kael’s boots slid back several feet. Pain ripped through his arms and chest. His teeth clenched so hard they ached but he held the line.

The void absorbed part of the lunar blast converting the ancient power into fuel. Strength flooded his body. For a moment the hunger stirred again but this time he pushed it down with thoughts of his mother’s touch and Vanya’s desperate grip on his hand. “I will not lose you,” he whispered through the strain.

The Heart roared in frustration. Its massive crystalline runes flared brighter. It charged again shaking the entire foundation of the Obsidian Keep. Logan seized the chaos darting forward with his blade aimed at Marra’s back. “If the beast won’t finish you I will!”

Vanya spun with a snarl. She intercepted the usurper her claws clashing against his steel. “You took everything from us! You will not touch her again!” Their fight turned vicious and personal. Sparks flew as alpha strength met stolen royal power. Vanya fought with raw passion every slash carrying fourteen years of grief and the burning love for the family she refused to lose again.

Kael split his focus. One hand maintained the shield against the Heart while the other sent a sharp vacuum pulse toward Logan. The force knocked the usurper sideways giving Vanya an opening. She slashed deep across his chest drawing a howl of pain and rage.

The Oracle watched from the shadows his wrinkled face twisted in horror. “This is madness. The Origin Core below is responding to the scentless one. If it fully awakens…”

He never finished. The ground beneath them split wide open with a deafening crack. A pillar of pure golden-silver energy shot upward from the deepest level of the keep bathing everything in blinding light. The true core of the Obsidian Keep the Origin of all lycan bloodlines was stirring.

The Heart of the Moon paused its attack. It turned its massive head toward the pillar of light almost reverent. Then it roared again this time in challenge. The ancient beast and the awakening core seemed to call to each other.

Kael felt it strongest of all. The void in his dantian vibrated violently resonating with the Origin Core. It pulled at him like a magnet. Power unlike anything he had ever sensed flooded the chamber. Ancient memories not his own flickered at the edge of his mind. Images of great wars forgotten gods and a power that existed before wolves walked the earth.

His knees buckled for a moment. Queen Marra caught him supporting his weight with her frail body. “Kael. Stay with us. That power is calling to your void. Do not let it consume you.”

Vanya finished driving Logan back and rushed to their side. She wrapped an arm around her brother’s waist blood from her own wounds mixing with his. The three of them stood together in the middle of the destruction. Family. Broken yet whole. “Whatever is down there we face it together. No more secrets. No more being alone.”

Kael straightened. The contact with his mother and sister steadied the raging storm inside him. He looked at them both. His usual cold mask had completely fallen away revealing raw emotion in his silver-blue eyes. Gratitude. Confusion. And a deep fierce love that was only just beginning to bloom. “I was empty for so long. Now I have you. I will not let this power take that away.”

The Origin Core’s pillar of light intensified. From within the chasm a new form began to rise. Not another beast. Something more ethereal. A colossal spectral wolf made of pure condensed moon qi its body shimmering with countless bloodline runes. Its eyes glowed with intelligence far beyond any Guardian. This was the true guardian of the lycan origin. The keeper of their ancestral power.

It fixed its gaze directly on Kael. A voice that was not quite sound but felt in the soul echoed through the chamber. “Scentless one. You carry the Divine Void. The antithesis of all blood. Why do you walk these halls?”

Kael stepped forward pulling his mother and sister with him. His voice rang out clear and strong. “Because this is my home. My blood. You will not deny me what was stolen.”

The spectral wolf tilted its massive head. “Blood and Void cannot coexist. One must consume the other.”

Logan staggered to his feet laughing hoarsely. Blood poured from the gash Vanya had given him. “Yes! Let the Origin judge him! Let it destroy the abomination!”

The spectral wolf raised one enormous paw. A wave of pure origin qi washed over them. Kael met it with his void. The two forces clashed creating a storm of violet and golden light that blinded everyone. Pain tore through Kael’s body as the ancient power tested him tried to rewrite him or erase him.

Vanya cried out holding onto him tightly. “Fight it brother! You are more than void. You are ours!”

Queen Marra added her voice and remaining strength. “My son was born from love. Feel it. Hold onto it.”

Their words their touch their love anchored him again. Kael roared and pushed back. The void absorbed part of the origin qi but this time he did not lose control. He redirected it weaving it with his own power. The spectral wolf’s eyes widened in something like surprise.

“You are different,” it rumbled. “The prophecy spoke of destruction. Yet you carry bonds.”

Before it could say more the Heart of the Moon attacked the spectral wolf from the side. The two ancient forces collided in a cataclysmic explosion that brought half the dungeon ceiling crashing down. Logan and the Oracle barely escaped being buried.

Kael shielded his family with a dome of violet energy. Debris bounced off it harmlessly. When the dust settled the two colossal beings were locked in combat tearing at each other with primordial fury. The entire keep trembled violently as if on the verge of collapse.

Vanya looked at Kael her eyes wide with awe and exhaustion. “What do we do now? They’re destroying everything.”

Kael’s gaze hardened. The family bond had given him clarity. “We go deeper. To the true core. I will claim what should have been mine from the beginning. And we end Logan’s reign once and for all.”

Queen Marra nodded though her body was fading fast from her wounds. “The royal archives and the throne room lie on the path to the core. There you will find the full truth of your birth my son.”

As they moved toward the crumbling staircase leading further down Logan’s voice echoed behind them full of venom. “You cannot escape destiny boy! The Origin will consume you!”

The spectral wolf and the Heart of the Moon continued their devastating battle above shaking the entire structure. But something even greater stirred at the absolute bottom of the keep. A presence so vast it made the void inside Kael tremble with both hunger and caution.

Kael helped his mother and sister down the treacherous stairs. Every step brought new danger. Collapsing tunnels. Ancient traps awakening. Yet with his family beside him he felt something he had never known in the Deadwood.

Purpose. Love. Home.

But as they descended closer to the Origin Core a new terrifying voice echoed directly into Kael’s mind. Ancient. Vast. Curious.

“Child of Nothingness. You have awakened me. Now prove you are worthy… or be unmade.”

The true trial of the scentless god had only just begun.
