Chapter7 Reward You for Sowing Discord?
Talia POV
He fell silent. After a long while, he finally said hoarsely, "I was in pain too back then. I thought about that child every day, thought about you. But I had no choice. I could only keep Serafina happy first. Once I had the ability, I would definitely..."
"Enough, Gavin. Stop acting. You came to find me now not because you feel guilty, but because the report came out, your company's going under, your dreams are crashing down, right?"
His face instantly went pale."No, I really wanted to explain things to you. I don't want you to keep misunderstanding me."
"Misunderstanding?" I sneered. "I haven't misunderstood you. I've just seen you clearly. You've been a selfish person from start to finish. To climb up, you'll sacrifice anything."
Gavin was so anxious veins popped on his forehead. He moved forward two steps but was blocked by the guards again. His voice trembling, he said, "Talia, I'm begging you, okay? That report destroyed my company's reputation completely. Partners are all pulling out. If this keeps up, I'm really done for."
I leaned back on the sofa without moving, my finger casually scrolling on my phone screen, still on the comment section of people cursing him. "Whether you're done for or not, what does that have to do with me?"
"How does it not!" His eyes were bloodshot. He softened his voice. "We were together for seven years after all. You're just going to watch me fall this hard? I know you hate me, but you've already gotten revenge. If this keeps going, it won't be good for anyone! Can you just tell the media that the report was fake, that you made it up in a moment of anger?"
I looked up at him, feeling both angry and amused. "Gavin, are you out of your mind? My child is gone and you want me to help clear your name? Why don't you ask your fiancée whether she thought about 'not being good for anyone' when she had me kidnapped?"
He choked for a moment, then rushed to defend himself. "That was Serafina's fault. I already talked to her about it. But now's not the time to dig up old issues. Can we just get past this hurdle first? Once my company stabilizes, I'll definitely make it up to you. However much money you want, I'll give it to you!"
"Money?" I snorted and stood up, walking in front of him and staring into his eyes. "My child's life, how much money can buy that?"
His face instantly went deathly pale. He opened his mouth but couldn't speak.
Probably realizing the soft approach wasn't working, he suddenly changed his expression. His eyes turned vicious and his voice dropped.
"Talia, don't push your luck. I've been nice to you, and now you're getting cocky? You believe I won't call the cops right now and say you deliberately fabricated facts to slander me? You won't have it easy either."
I paused for a moment, then laughed. "Go ahead and report it. I still have your transfer records from when you cried poor to me and had me help pay your rent. Plus the chat logs of you breaking up with me after you hooked up with Serafina. Want to show those to the police too?"
His pupils contracted. He probably didn't expect me to still have these.
I pressed forward another step. "Also, what do you think the police will do if they find out Serafina had people kidnap me and caused my miscarriage? The Camorra family is powerful, but they can't cover up everything, right?"
My words left him without confidence. His fists clenched until they cracked, but he didn't dare make more threats.
Just then, his phone suddenly rang frantically in his pocket. The screen showed "Vice President."
He hurriedly answered. As soon as he said "hello," the person on the other end tore into him.
"Gavin! What the hell are you doing? Our biggest partner just emailed saying they're terminating the contract and threatening to sue us for fraud! The company accounts are about to be frozen. Get back here now."
Gavin's face got paler and paler. He kept saying "I'll be right there" and "don't panic, I'll handle it." After hanging up, he looked at me like he wanted to eat me alive, but didn't dare say anything more. He could only glare at me viciously, then turn and stumble out.
Watching his retreating figure, I didn't feel particularly satisfied. I just felt cold.
This was the man I'd loved for seven years. In the end, for his own interests, he could turn against me, threaten me, but never once thought to apologize to me and the child.
I sat back on the sofa. Just as I was about to pick up my phone, I heard footsteps behind me.
I looked at Jareth walking in.
Jareth had just finished handling matters outside and looked at me.
I was in a good mood. Without waiting for him to speak, I took the initiative to approach him, reaching up to hook his tie and gently pull, drawing him closer to me.
I looked up at him and said happily, "Don Jareth, you just saw your son-in-law run off with his tail between his legs, right? Shouldn't you reward me?"
Jareth was the head of the Camorra family. He definitely knew what just happened.
Better to bring it up myself first.
"Reward you for sowing discord?"
I leaned into his arms. "I just helped everyone see the truth. After all, some people wear human skin but don't do human things."
Jareth let go and took a step back, creating distance. He said calmly, "Don't go overboard. Serafina is my adopted daughter."
I knew he was warning me, but I didn't care too much.
Anyway, I had him as my backer now. No matter how arrogant Serafina was, she wouldn't dare openly do anything to me. For now, I'd collect a little interest. Later, when Jareth was disappointed in them, he naturally wouldn't interfere.
Two days later, Gavin's company was almost crushed by negative online comments. Partners were pulling out one after another. Even the bank came to demand loan payments.
He was as anxious as an ant on a hot pan, camping out at Serafina's door every day, begging her for help.
At first, Serafina was also angry that Gavin caused such a big mess and made the Camorra family lose face. But she couldn't withstand Gavin's pestering, swearing oaths and pledging loyalty, saying he'd listen to her about everything from now on.
Plus she couldn't bear to give up on Gavin, so she finally gave in.
She directly used the Camorra family's connections. First, she had several mainstream media outlets remove related reports and suppressed the trending topics online. Those accounts that cursed the most were banned in no time.
Then, several companies under the family actively invested in Gavin's company and helped him secure several new partners, forcibly pulling the nearly bankrupt company back from the edge of the cliff.
When the news reached my ears, I was drinking coffee in Jareth's office.
I put down my cup. I hadn't expected this one attempt to finish off Gavin. I'd already guessed Serafina wouldn't just watch Gavin collapse.
"Looks like those little tricks of yours really aren't enough."
I walked to his desk. "They treated me like that. I just wanted to collect a little interest. I didn't even do anything major."
I sat on the desk, reached out to touch Jareth's face, leaned close, and kissed his lips.
Jareth's lips were slightly cool. After I kissed him, he looked up at me and simply brushed away my hand that was on the desk. "Sit properly."
