Introduction

The seventh year of being reclaimed by the Alpha family, and I still haven't stepped into the inner circle of the family.

The family’s ancient rules are clear: for a member to return after being cast out, they must submit an application to return, signed by the Alpha and approved by the council of elders, followed by re-recording of the bloodline in the scent registry, before they can be officially accepted back into the family.

My brother submitted ninety-nine times of applications for me, none of which were approved.

On the hundredth attempt, I watched through the ajar door of the council hall as the green wax-sealed "Permission for Return" stamp fell onto my file.

Chapter 1

I am the discarded Alpha heir, wandering outside the pack.

Because I’ve been away from the pack for so long, the scent of my bloodline has faded.

My application for return has been delayed again and again.

I clutch the repeatedly revised draft of my return application and hear the faint “creak” of the door hinge behind me.

“Ethan, this time… did the council permit?”

I rush to block Ethan’s path, my voice tight.

This is the hundredth time.

Seven years, a hundred applications, and yet I’m still waiting like a fool.

Ethan, however, avoids my gaze and shoves a stack of papers into my arms.

“It didn’t pass,” his voice is flat, void of emotion. “The Elders say your scent from Storm Ridge Pack is too weak after seven years, and you’ll have to wait a little longer.”

My heart sinks, and I mechanically flip through the stack of papers.

But then my fingers unexpectedly brush against a stiff corner—

It’s the edge of the green wax seal! Only the inner circle permission documents bear this seal!

“Ethan, this…” I snap my head up, about to demand an explanation, but I’m interrupted by a sweet yet sharp voice.

“Ethan!”

Zoe lovingly loops her arm through Ethan’s, her gaze sweeping over me with obvious disdain.

“I always said some people are just an empty shell of bloodline, without any real elite strength, yet you’re too soft-hearted and waste your effort on submitting applications for her.”

I clench the papers in my hand, my knuckles turning white. The words I was about to speak are suddenly lodged in my throat.

Ethan quickly intervenes, “Zoe, don’t say that. Lila will just have to wait a little longer.”

“Wait?” Zoe sneers, “Even if she waits ten more years, she won’t make it! Ethan, you’re just too kind. She’s only here because of her mother’s aura, she doesn’t belong in the inner circle.”

I stare at Ethan, hoping he will say something just.

But he merely frowns, his tone still unfeeling: “Zoe, stop. Lila, you should go back for now. I’ll talk to the Elders again.”

“Talk?” My fingers tremble as I grip the papers, “Ethan, what is this document in your hands? Has the Elder already approved it, and you’ve been hiding it from me?”

Ethan’s face changes suddenly, and he hastily hides the papers behind his back. “You’re mistaken! That’s not…”

Zoe immediately tightens her grip on his arm, her voice both urgent and sweet: “Ethan, look at her! She didn’t get her own application approved, so now she’s assuming you hide the truth!”

“I’m not mistaken!” I gasp, my chest tightening with pain, my voice rising.

Ethan, clearly agitated, raises his voice, “Lila! Stop making a scene! You still can’t officially return! Just wait a little longer…”

“Always longer!” I laugh bitterly, but my eyes sting with tears. “Ethan, how much longer do you want me to wait?”

His throat bobs as he swallows, but he remains silent.

I stare at the document hiding a secret, my fingertips cold.

Seven years of waiting, a hundred struggles, and it all feels like a joke.

There’s nothing left to ask.

I take a deep breath, suppressing the moisture in my eyes, and turn to leave.

“Lila!”

Ethan calls my name from behind.

I don’t look back.

The wind carries Zoe’s voice, laced with mockery: “Don’t call her, she’s just doing this on purpose, trying to get you to beg her.”

"Eyes up here," he said.

My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.

I found myself molded to Lex's will, my feet irresistibly following the dance steps.

The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.

The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.

I soon found myself lost in his arms.

When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.

The ballroom fell silent.

Was he about to kiss me?

“Without my protection and your title as my Luna, it won’t be long before you come crawling back, begging me to take you in again.”

Alpha Caden Blackwell believed those words would break me. That after three years of marriage marked by silence, humiliation, and quiet rejection, I would fear a life without him.

I did once.

As the Luna of the Shadowcrest Pack, I gave everything to a man my wolf recognized as her mate, enduring whispers, cold stares, and a pack that never truly accepted me. I stayed because I believed love required endurance. Because I believed patience would one day be rewarded.

That belief shattered the night Caden welcomed his former lover back into our home, along with a child he claimed as his heir. It ended the moment his choices nearly cost me my life and the life of one of my unborn pups. Leaving was no longer a matter of pride. It was survival.

Caden does not know the woman who walked away. He still sees the Luna who waited, who forgave, who loved without limits. He does not see Nova Ashton, a woman capable of rebuilding her identity and claiming a future on her own terms.

I will never crawl back.

He thought the worst thing he had ever done was losing me.

He was wrong.

Six years ago, Pete Leadsilver had everything an Alpha could want. Power, a respected pack and a future already written for him.

Then he met me.

What began as a game became a mistake I would spend years trying to survive. When I told him I was carrying his child, Pete chose not to believe me. He rejected me, humiliated me, and allowed the people around him to make sure I understood that there was no place for me in his world.

So I disappeared.

I took the secret of my pregnancy with me and built a life far away from the Alpha who had broken me.

Six years later, Pete finds me again. Only this time, he isn't the man with all the power. His pack is dying, his people are running out of time, and I may be the only person capable of saving them.

But I'm no longer the woman Pete remembers. And beside me is a little boy who carries far too much of Pete's face to be a coincidence.

Our reunion should have been about a cure, but instead, it becomes the beginning of a war neither of us saw coming.

Because Pete's greatest danger isn't outside his pack.

It's inside his own family.

Old resentment turns into manipulation. Loyalty becomes betrayal. And the people Pete trusts begin hiding secrets that threaten to destroy everything he's built.

Then someone comes for the people I love.

Suddenly, this is no longer about whether Pete can earn my forgiveness.

It's about whether he can keep me alive.

Whether he can protect the son he never knew existed.

Whether he can uncover the truth before the people closest to him destroy everything he has finally learned to value.

Along the way, we'll lose people we thought would always stand beside us, I'll be forced to confront wounds I've spent six years trying to bury, and the family we're slowly building will be tested in ways neither of us could have imagined.

Because sometimes love isn't the hardest thing to find. Sometimes it's the hardest thing to survive.

Pete once believed power meant never needing anyone and I once believed surviving him meant leaving him behind.

We were both wrong.

Because some bonds refuse to die, some betrayals cut deeper than rejection and some people don't come back into your life to give you a second chance.

They come back to show you exactly what you almost lost.

Pete Leadsilver lost me once.

This time, he'll have to fight to keep the family he never knew he needed.
