Chapter 5 Heart ache

Lyra's POV

“I'll take my leave now” I bowed and turned but was forced to stop when lord Kael stopped me with his voice.

“I didn't tell you to leave” His voice was hardened and without wasting a second, I turned back to them and kept my head bowed.

I stood still and listened to their conversation.

“You look more handsome now, Kael” the lady smiled and from the corner of my eyes, I saw as she placed her hand on his chest.

And the bond….. it reacted. My chest hurt even though it was just a bit.

It made me realize lord Kael loved what she was doing to him.

I should leave. Sights like this would be much for me to bear.

We needed to break the bond as soon as we could. I didn't want to go through pain that is unnecessary like this.

The bond wouldn't do me any good. He won't like me and I also don't like him. The bond should mean protection for me but this one never will.

“You've grown taller, Seraphina” he replied to her for the first time since she had been speaking.

Seraphina. So that was her name.

“And more beautiful” he said, his flirting tone crystal clear.

Seraphina giggled. Lord Kael took her hand off his chest.

“We have a lot to catch up on. Let's talk in my room over tea” he smirked.

“Should we?” Seraphina's voice brightened.

She muttered afterwards like she had just remembered something.

“I heard about the Alpha's mating ceremony and I know that's why you are back” she paused. “I'm sorry I missed it”

Lord Kael flashed her a smile even though it barely lasted for a second. “It's fine”

Seraphina continued and from the little minutes I've spent with her, I could tell she was someone who likes talking a lot. Or was it because they just met after a long time and had a lot to catch up on?

Were they that close when he was here? And more importantly, why do I care?

“I heard the new Luna has a daughter. That means you have a stepsister!” She sounds excited about that but I was beginning to get nervous because in a few minutes time, she will get to know that I'm the stepsister she's talking about.

“Tell me” she paused. “Is she beautiful? Cute? Nice? Cunning?”

Lord Kael scoffed in an amusing way. “She's just a mere maid working here”

Seraphina's face turned in disgust. “What?”

“The alpha mated an Omega who has a wretched useless Omega as a daughter?” She frowned.

Lord Kael turned to me and that made my breath hitch. “Meet her. My so-called stepsister” he said with mockery in his voice.

Seraphina snapped her gaze to me and the surprised look on her face didn't go unnoticed.

“What? Her?” She looked over at me like I was really trash like she had called me.

“Why is she dressed….. like this?” She lowered her voice and blinked her eyes.

“Don't worry about her,” Lord Kael laughed. “She won't be a problem, she won't be elevated, I don't want her as my step-sister”

My jaws clenched but I tried so fucking hard to hide it. I kept a calm gaze and inside of me, I tried breathing practices.

“Her mother only mated my father for wealth. They are both gold diggers” lord Kael added.

“Oh” Seraphina muttered. “She's so unlucky” she looked over at me with disgust.

“We should go inside,” Seraphina continued. “Not waste time on some wretched unlucky maid”

Lord Kael turned his gaze to me and I bowed my head more deeply. “Get back to work. I'll call you when I need to talk to you again”

Talk to me. I know what that meant. When we need to try breaking the bond again.

I bowed my head and without a word, I turned. But before I was able to land my second step successfully, a hand grabbed me and yanked me back.

“You are disrespectful’’ Seraphina said, creasing her face. “The alpha heir talked to you and all you do is bow?”

I lifted my gaze to look at the alpha heir and then back at Seraphina.

Both of them stood relaxed, expecting me to do what they required of me.

I took a deep breath. There was nothing I could do. I'd have to do as they say, who am I not to?

The maid daughter of the new Luna who's nothing but a gold digger.

I bowed again. “Forgive my impudence”

“I understand and will be waiting for your call, my lord” I stood like that for a few seconds before I lifted my face and turned, exiting into the mansion.

They didn't call me back and I was glad for that.

Work…. There was a lot to do, a lot to clean because of the goddamn mating ceremony.

“Here, take this, Lyra” The headmaid, Gina, suddenly appeared in front of me and pushed a bowl into my chest.

The way she did it with force made some of the water spill on my work dress.

“Round off the cleaning here” she instructed and walked away immediately.

The water stinks. I looked into the bowl and could see my reflection in the mud looking water.

I breathed deeply and worked like she had told me to. Scrubbing and cleaning the floor like I had always done every day.

The other maids also cleaned and they gossiped as they did.

Has a day ever passed by with the maids cleaning and not gossiping? But I was just an outcast. Someone they casted aside. An Omega they think is still lower than them and doesn't belong in their class.

“I heard Lady Seraphina is back,” one said. “I don't want to cross paths with her”

“She has her own chamber in this estate, I'm afraid she will be staying for long and we will be seeing her often”

“She's the future Luna, she gets to treat us anyhow she likes and no one complains” another sighed.

That moment, the sharp pain hit me again. Kael and Seraphina were together. I didn't know what they were doing, but it hurt so much that my eyes got teary.
