Chapter 7 Someone has been listening

Lyra's POV.

The pain became too much to bear that I almost passed out while cleaning.

I was so sure they had sex. No pain would be that much if that's not what it is.

The maids saw me struggling and clutching to my chest but none of them asked what was wrong with me.

They murmured amongst themselves before walking away to get a change of water to continue their cleaning.

I groaned, tightening my grip on the rag in my other hand because of the way the pain kept escalating.

Footsteps approached but it was hard to lift my eyes to look at who that is.

The person stopped in front of me and I could tell it was a woman because of the shoes and the silk royal gown.

Slowly, I forced myself to lift my gaze and I was surprised to see my mother standing, her face widened in terror.

“Lyra?” She called with her lips trembling slightly.

I couldn't respond and only took in a ragged breath. The pain was starting to stop.

Did they finish?

Mom crouched down beside me and got me to lean on her shoulder as she led me into one of the rooms nearby and it happened to be the built-in library for the alpha heir.

She made me sit at a corner in the room and I breathed in deeply. It was finally stopping, no, it finally totally did.

“What the fucking hell is wrong with you?” Mom asked, being mindful of how raised her voice is.

“Does it hurt somewhere?” She asked.

Her face was stern and her voice was harsh but she was sounding concerned and that made me scoff.

When has she ever cared?

“If I tell you it hurts somewhere, what will you do? Try to make me feel better?” I scoffed again.

“I won't tolerate you being so disrespectful to me, Lyra!” She snapped.

“I'm fine. There's nothing to worry about, you didn't even need to stop and try to help” I talked fast. “Because you don't even care”

“I came searching for you and found you like that,” she said.

I stood up from the corner where I was sitting and groaned. “Why? You have something to tell me?”

That could be the only reason why she's seeking me out.

“I heard the alpha heir's future Luna is around.” She paused.

Yes, I know and I've met her. But I didn't tell her this.

“The alpha heir doesn't like you,” she continued. “So you should do everything you can to make sure Seraphina likes you”

“That's how you can secure your place here and elevate yourself from a low maid to someone close to her” she added.

I chuckled. “And why should I do that?”

“Because I won't be able to help you. I might be the Luna and you are my daughter but that doesn't change anything”

“You are still a low class Omega and that won't get you anywhere” she said.

I breathed in deeply. She was getting me so pissed off at the moment and I was only trying my best to hide it.

“Tell me, Mom” I croaked. “Did you really get mated to the alpha just for his wealth?”

That's what everyone had been saying and even the alpha heir believes that and because of that, he won't be taking things easy with me.

“Not only for the wealth but the powers too, Lyra” she said.

I scoffed and my legs went weak in an instant. I know it's something she could do, she has done lots worse but I didn't expect her not to think about me.

She didn't think about what this action of hers would cost me.

Once the rest of the maids get to know she's my Mother, then there won't go a day without them mocking and talking about me.

They've always done that and I barely cared but I think it'd be unbearable then.

“I don't know what to say” I responded truthfully but I knew what I wanted to do at the moment, curse at her and yell at her for being so foolish.

“You don't need to say anything” her voice cut through sharply. “You just need to obey what I say”

Damn! My mother has been becoming more comical lately.

I held my laugh back in because nothing was funny at the moment. “Obey you? Why should I?”

“Because you've always done” her eyes darkened.

“And that was because I was never given a choice” I spat. “At least, here, I can choose to obey you or not, its my choice”

“Here, you don't call the games and my life doesn't belong to you”

“You need to survive, Lyra,” Mom's voice softened. “To survive, then you'd have to drop this act of stubbornness and listen to what I fucking say”

She was getting angry and I knew it wouldn't do the both of us any good if the maids find us here. Then they'd find out about us, they'd find what we were doing in the library suspicious.

I decided to give in. “I'll try to listen to you, but don't forget I won't let you control me here” I stated and made it clear.

Her eyes lingered on me for a while before she turned and exited the library.

When she was gone, I sucked in a deep breath and brushed my hair to the back annoyingly.

I moved towards the entrance, wanting to exit the library too but I was forced to stop.

I strained my ears because it had just felt like I heard something move, like a foot being dragged on the ground.

I didn't feel it, I surely heard it. It was a foot, dragged, once.

Slowly, I moved my feet towards where the sound came from and when I got there, I gasped.

There was a man standing, his two hands holding a book which covered his face.

Someone had been here all along, listening to everything we talked about.
