Chapter 5 (The Breakfast 2)
Kaelenya pov
I pressed my lips together, and took a deep breath. My eyes blinked uncontrollably as I raised my shaky right hand to the knife. I picked it up, then dropped it back. I took a deep breath, and picked it back with my left hand. Then I raised my eyes and stared at him, like I was waiting for his approval.
“Pathetic!" He snapped. "So… you don’t know how to use a cutlery set?” his voice cut through the silence, slow and sharp, each word heavy with scorn.
I cleared my throat, "I...I..."
"Hmm." He scoffed, cutting me off. "What a big mistake you are. You should be ashamed of your whole existence."
I took a deep breath in, trying to hold back my tears. But it wasn't my fault I didn't know how to use it, nobody taught me how, so how would I know what I didn't learn.
He sighed, picked up his and started eating, and I just mirrored exactly what he did.
The room was silent, except for the faint hum of distant noises. I chewed slowly, my eyes fixed on him, watching every measured movement he made.
“Get me wine,” he ordered, his deep voice cutting through the quiet as he tilted his head towards the maid beside him.
She gave a quick nod and reached for the bottle. Her hands trembled as she poured, the glass neck clinking softly against the rim of the cup. Suddenly, the bottle slipped from her grip and crashed to the floor. The red wine splattered across the polished tiles, and a shard of glass skidded dangerously close to his feet.
His eyes snapped wide, dark with fury. He shot up from his chair, his fist slamming against the table with a thunderous crack. I jerked back, with my heart racing, and the sound vibrating through my chest.
His voice exploded. “How dare you! Are you insane?”
She dropped to her knees immediately, her whole body shaking in fear. “I...I... I'm sorry Alpha, please...it...it was a mistake!” Her hands shook as she stretched out to the broken glass, tears fell freely from her eyes. In her state of fear and confusion, she fell right onto the broken pieces scattered on the floor. I saw her flinch from the pain, her knee scraping against the jagged corners, and bleeding, but she didn't stand up, she just remained there, begging. Blood stained the marble floor beneath her, as tears fell down her cheek.
I sat on my chair frozen, my eyes opened wide in surprise, and my breath stuck in my throat. The look of fear in her eyes made me scared too.
Roman didn’t say another word, his eyes were just buried on the red wine spilled on the floor. Finally, he raised his hand and waved. “Take her,” he ordered.
Two of his men moved toward her, grabbing her arms. She yelled, struggled, begged, but they carried her down the hall. Her screams followed in the house. At first they were sharp then it became muffled and suddenly, everywhere was silent again.
The silence was even more horrible than her screams. My eyes moved down to the blood on the marble floor, the pieces of shards reflecting the candlelight. My whole body shook, my teeth gnashed hard against each other. And suddenly Roman turned his head to me, and for a brief second, it was like my heart stopped beating.
"This breakfast is over!" he screamed. "Get your tiny self back to your room."
Before he even finished, I shot up from the chair, my legs shaking, and bolted up the stairs. My feet pounded on each step as I ran straight to my room. I slammed the door shut and twisted the lock with trembling fingers. Then I slid down the door, with my back pressed hard against it, until I was sitting on the floor. My heart thudded so fast it hurt.
What just happened? Where did they drag her to? Is… is she going to be okay? How could he be so cruel over a small mistake? And the way he looked at the spilled wine...like it was his own blood spilling on the floor...it made my stomach turn.
A sudden, heavy knock made me flinch. My whole body jerked. I wrapped my arms around myself and buried my head between my knees, squeezing my eyes shut. What if it’s him?. I shook my head violently. "Let it not be him, please...let it not be him.
The knock came again harder, but with a voice this time around, "It's me Janet, Luna."
I quickly wiped my tears with the back of my hand, I stood up and straightened my dress, and opened the door.
She walked in smiling and holding a small cup in her hands. As she turned to me her face changed. "Are you okay Luna," She asked.
I cleared my throat, my lips curled into a fake smile, "yes" I nodded my head, "I'm good."
She tilted her head getting a closer look at my swollen eyes. "Are you sure, because..."
"I'm okay Janet." I cut her off, my voice a little harsh. "What is that you're holding?" my eyes buried on the tiny cup, staring at it curiously.
"It's tonic," she replied.
My eyes rolled in confusion. "Tonic for what?"
"The head physician prepared it for you, it's to prepare your body for fertility." She continued smiling as usual
My eyes moved from the cup to her face, "Must I drink this?" I asked curiously.
She nodded, "Yes Luna. It's really important, it will help you, and besides the first mating date is around the corner.
My heart skipped a beat. “What? There’s a calendar for it?”
She nodded, holding the cup tighter. “Yes of course, there is.”
My eyes hovered around her, “How did you hear about it? Because I know not just anybody knows these things.”
She chuckled, “I overheard them talking about it, when the head physician brought over the tonic.”
My eyes darted from one corner of the room to the other. My feet tapped fast against the floor. “When is it?”
“It’s in three days’ time.”
“What?” I screamed, my voice cracking. My knees gave way and I dropped onto the bed, sinking deep into the mattress as if it could hide me.
I know I was determined to do everything to give him an heir, but I don't know if I was ready. How would someone like this behave in bed, and how come it's happening so fast.
