Introduction
The fatal flaw in her plan? Seraphina doesn't know she is a dormant Crimson Sovereign; the rarest, most feared werewolf bloodline thought wiped out a century ago. She believes she is entirely human.
Chapter 1
[Seraphina's POV]
The black wrought-iron gates of Obsidian Sanctum Academy look exactly as they did five years ago, when I was dragged away into the screaming night.
"You ready for this, Sera?" My handler, Commander Sterling, glances at me through the rearview mirror. His government-issue sedan idles at the heavy security checkpoint, waiting for clearance under the pouring coastal rain.
"No," I answer honestly, tightening my grip on the canvas duffel bag resting on my lap.
Sterling’s mouth twitches into something that might pass for sympathy if he were capable of human emotion. "Good. Fear keeps you sharp. Remember your cover story. Elena Sterling, orphaned at fourteen, shuffled through state group homes, finally secured an academic scholarship to finish senior year at New Valen’s most exclusive academy for high-society scions."
All lies.
The truth? Seraphina Vance died in a house fire five years ago alongside her parents. The Human Defense Directorate made sure the death certificates were stamped and sealed. The real story? My parents didn't perish in an accident. They were slaughtered by something the official press called 'a tragic structural collapse,' but I know was far more monstrous.
And the three young heirs who stood in the velvet shadows of our dining room and watched it happen without lifting a finger? They're still here, ruling this school like dark princes.
The security guard waves us through, and my stomach twists into a hard, cold knot as we glide past the glass conservatory where I used to hide during childhood galas with my best friend Camille. Past the ancient stone gargoyles. Past the VIP parking lot where everything was stolen from me.
"You have ninety days," Sterling says flatly as he pulls into the shadowed administrative driveway. "Ninety days to infiltrate House Vane's inner circle, confirm their illegal blood-syndicate operations, and plant our bugs in their sanctum. Can you do that?"
Can I infiltrate the most powerful werewolf pack in the region, the same pack that ordered my family's execution, and destroy them from the inside?
"Yes."
"Good girl." He reaches onto the dashboard and hands me a thick black folder. "Your schedule, keycard, dorm assignment. You're rooming in St. Jude Hall, Suite 402. Rooming with Camille Laurent…"
"No." The word rips out of my throat before I can stop it.
Sterling raises a cold gray eyebrow. "Is there a problem?"
Camille was my best friend. Before. The girl who shared every secret with me, who swore we'd go to university together, who I trusted more than my own shadow. The same Camille who was turned and adopted into high society six months after I disappeared, and started dating one of them three months later.
"No problem," I force out, swallowing the razor-sharp bitterness.
"Seraphina," Sterling's voice drops an octave, laced with implied steel. "If you can't handle looking at familiar faces, tell me now. I can easily reassign this operation to someone less emotionally fragile."
"I can handle it."
He studies me for a grueling ten seconds, then nods once. "Your contact frequency is in the file. Encrypted text only. Do not make me regret backing your field placement."
Then the child-locks click off, and I’m standing alone on the damp marble steps of St. Jude Hall with a bag full of wiretaps and a chest full of cold, burning hatred.
Suite 402 smells like expensive tuberose perfume and raw privilege. The hallways ring with the soft, melodic laughter of girls wearing hand-tailored uniforms and diamond stud earrings.
My hand hovers over the door handle for three agonizing seconds before I force my fingers to turn it.
Camille is standing near the floor-to-ceiling balcony window, backlit by the evening fog. For a split second, she looks identical to the fourteen-year-old girl I left behind. Same waist-length dark hair. Same delicate, porcelain features.
She turns, her dark violet eyes widening.
For a single heartbeat, my pulse freezes. Five years, thirty pounds of lean muscle from Directorate combat training, dark hair dyed jet black from my original copper-red, and brown contact lenses obscuring my natural silver iris... but maybe she sees through it. Maybe she knows—
"Oh my gosh, you must be my new roommate!" She glides across the hardwood floor with a smile that looks breathtakingly warm. "I'm Camille! Camille Laurent. I am so sorry about the trunks near the door, I'm still unpacking from the winter retreat in Aspen."
She doesn't recognize me.
A strange wave of relief and hollow grief crashes against my ribs.
"Elena," I manage to say, my voice raspy. "Elena Sterling."
"Elena! What a beautiful name. Do you go by El? Ellie?" She’s already talking at lightning speed, exactly as she used to when we were kids. "I took the desk near the window, but if you need the natural light for studying, we can totally switch! I'm an awful morning person anyway, my fiancé says waking me up is like trying to raise the dead..."
"The other desk is fine."
Something in my clipped tone makes her pause. "I'm sorry, am I rambling? My therapist says I talk when I'm nervous around new people." She chuckles, a soft, musical sound. "I promise I'm usually much more composed."
Liar. You were always this talkative when you felt awkward. It was one of the things I used to love about you.
"It's fine," I say, setting my bag on the bare mattress. "I'm just tired from the drive."
"Of course! Where are you moving from?"
The rehearsed lies slip off my tongue smoothly. "Group homes up north. Academic scholarship. This transfer is pretty much my only shot at getting into a top-tier university."
Camille's expression instantly shifts to deep, empathetic sorrow. "I'm so sorry. That must have been incredibly hard for you."
"I survived."
"Well, you're going to love it here at Obsidian Sanctum. The curriculum is intense, but the social events are incredible." She pulls a silk blouse from a wardrobe trunk. "In fact, tonight is the Welcoming Gala at the Iron Conservatory. Everyone goes. You should come with me!"
"I don't really do high-society galas."
"It's not formal-formal, just drinks and welcome toasts," she insists, looking at me with genuine warmth. "Please? I'd hate for you to sit in this room alone on your first night."
I should refuse. I should stay in the room, unpack my encrypted scanning equipment, and study House Vane's security blueprints.
But the Gala is where they will be. The three scions who haunted my nightmares for five years.
Julian Vane. Dorian Vance. Gabriel Frost.
The untouchable princes of New Valen.
"All right," I hear myself say. "I'll go."
Camille’s face lights up. "Wonderful! Oh, and..." She bites her lower lip, a subtle flush rising on her cheekbones. "Just a heads up. My fiancé and his inner circle will be there. They can seem a little... intimidating at first. The Vane bloodline has a reputation. But I promise Julian is remarkably gentle once you get to know him."
My blood runs cold. "Your fiancé?"
"Julian Vane. We've been together for four years now." She unlocks her phone, displaying a high-resolution photo of herself wrapped in the arms of a young man who has grown from the sharp-edged fifteen-year-old I remember into something devastatingly lethal.
Broad, structured shoulders. A razor-sharp jawline. Dark hair styled with effortless precision. Tattoos inked in obsidian spell-work winding up his neck. And his eyes—even through a screen, his eyes gleam with a fierce, unnatural crimson-gold brilliance.
A Crown Sovereign.
"He's incredible, right?" Camille grins softly. "Everyone at court says it was a match made in heaven."
He's a executioner, I want to scream at her. He watched my home burn. He watched my parents die.
"Yeah," I say instead, forcing my mouth into a rigid smile. "Incredible."

Love's Deadly Equation
I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.
