Chapter 2
Phina’s POV
“Mate…”
My hands finally gave way as I let go of the tray and let all the contents fall down.
“You clumsy klutz…!” Layla yelled as she was beginning to look really demented like she could snap at me at any moment from then. But she still tried to maintain her cool, probably because of Jason.
I could barely notice the look on her face as my eyes were on Jason who was just as transfixed as I was. Instantly, I was lost in the raging green sea in his eyes which made it seem a lot like I was in some kind of illusion.
“No…” I really didn't believe that was happening to me at that point. An alpha? Mated to me? A maid? Stop playing…
Even if it was true, I was sure there was no way Layla and her shitty family were going to let me have it my way.
They would stop at nothing to make things work between their daughter and the handsome Alpha whom everyone was going nuts over. Even if it meant them dumping me off far away somewhere.
Those thoughts were slowly causing the irresistible feelings of attraction turn into fear. I was in actual trouble with Layla and her family. But Layla especially. We already had a score to settle by the end of the day, and that was only going to make it even worse.
“You…?” Jason was finally saying his first words ever since he stepped into the room, and it was a serious struggle to get those words out. “She's my mate…”
The whole was set ablaze with that as Jason's words were followed by a wave of murmuring That felt like an intentional attempt to let everyone know what was happening just in case they didn't get it the first time.
Every single eye in the room turned in my direction. I couldn't bear that sort of embarrassment and I sincerely felt like just running out of the banquet room but that was close to impossible.
“What…?” Poor Layla… She was completely confused. She had probably been thinking she had finally brought the man of her dreams to her home, not knowing she had just led him to his mate. “There's got to be some kind of mistake somewhere…”
She wasn't ready to accept any of that and I could understand her pain even though I really enjoyed it in some way. And in a way, I was glad Jason had said it out loud and that way there was very little room for contention.
“You can't possibly be serious…” Layla decided to pull off one more move of desperation as she hurriedly stood in front of Jason. “This is some kind of prank to tick me off…right?” She smiled in anticipation of hearing him say it was a prank. “Right?”
But the smile on her face faded really fast as she saw he wasn't looking in her direction at all. His eyes locked on me like I was some prey that he wasn't going to let go of till he had me in his arms.
“Step aside…” Jason didn't waste a second in brushing her aside as he slowly paced towards me with desire burning in his green eyes.
From where I stood, I could feel the same longing. I never thought mate pull could be that powerful as I felt every single part of me calling out to him.
“You look so beautiful, mate…” He walked past every maid as he closed in on me and I didn't know if I was meant to back away from him or just stand there. “What's your name, mate?”
Everyone seemed to have their ears itching from hearing him call me mate. But I was just too thrilled to care about any of that.
“I'm amazed…sorry I meant…I'm Phina…” I inhaled deeply as I was trying to keep myself from losing it. “Pleased to meet you and I—”
“Uhm, Alpha Jason, I think you have to dwell on this for too long…” Luna Helen stepped in, “We have a banquet to carry on and I think we shouldn't let some maid ruin it…”
“I don't think there would be a need for a banquet…” Jason didn't even turn to look at her as he put his hands on my shoulders like he was trying to figure out if I was real or not. “I think I've found the reason why I came here…”
“Jason…?” Layla was soon darting forward to where he was, with a sorry face that couldn't be fixed by any make up. “What's going on? You can't possibly be mated to a maid. You are just going to pollute your royal blood and possibly—”
“And who the heck are you to tell me that crap…” Jason snapped with anger that made me afraid as well.
“But she doesn't even have a wolf…” Layla was really relentless and I had just been waiting for her to bring that up. “How can a helpless maid without a wolf even take the place of an alpha's Luna…? You really don't want to disappoint your people do you?”
“She's mine and I really don't think I need anyone's permission to make her mine…” Jason wasn't going to let any of that. “You have no idea how long I have searched…”
Hearing his words made me feel really safe as it was clear nothing was going to make him change his mind.
“But Jason…”
“Quiet…” he shushed Layla. “It's Alpha Jason…” he took my hand instantly and turned to everyone in the room. “I'll be leaving with my mate now…”
“No way…” Layla was lamenting in an almost hopeless manner. It looked like the meeting after the banquet would never happen as the banquet itself had been cancelled.
“Shall we?” Jason smiled at me, warming my heart with emotions I had never felt my entire life.
“Yeah…” I couldn't refuse walking with him as it almost felt like walking down the aisles in front of a dumbfounded crowd.
It felt like a dream of which I would kill anyone who would dare to wake me.
“I'm going to take good care of you…” Jason said with a smile and a tone that could be easily misinterpreted as sinister.
But I didn't give much thought to it. He w
as my mate and he was a powerful alpha. That was all that mattered.
