Introduction

I was vacationing in Miami with my mother when my husband’s female right-hand woman sent me a photo out of the blue. In the picture lay an elderly woman stripped half-naked, her body covered in fresh blood, paired with a cocky voice memo.
The audio blared Gina’s arrogant tone:
[Cecilia, keep your greedy, miserly mother in check!]
[How dare she sneak into the mansion Don Vito just bought for his own mother to mooch off him? She’s got zero shame!]
[I spared her a breath. No need to thank me.]
I froze on the spot and glanced up.
My mother was sitting right across from me, safe and sound.
I zoomed in on the photo without delay, and my heart dropped straight to my stomach.
That woman sprawled on the pavement was my mother-in-law!
I immediately dialed Gina’s number. “Gina, have you lost your mind? That’s Vito’s mother!”
Gina’s tone remained utterly dismissive. “Come on! Vito made it clear. Your mother’s just your mother, his mother’s his own. He’s never once considered your side of the family his real kin.”

Chapter 1

The Miami sunshine blazed so bright it stung my eyes.

I sat at an open-air beach café, slicing scone on my mom Isabella’s plate for her.

My phone suddenly lit up.

It was a MMS from Gina—Vito’s right-hand woman and his mistress, whom he paraded around openly for everyone to see.

The second I tapped to open the photo, my breath caught in my throat.

The frame showed an elderly woman crumpled in a pool of blood, sprawled across the carved iron gates of that lavish Long Island mansion Vito had just bought.

Her silver hair was matted with crimson, her coat torn to shreds, and a few blood-stained golf clubs littered the ground around her body.

Right after the photo popped up, a snarky voice memo from Gina loaded:

[Cecilia, keep your greedy, miserly mother in check!]

[Vito just bought his own mother a villa as a welcome gift, and she actually dares to sneak over and crash there?]

[I've already set rules for the Hale family, sparing her a breath. No need to thank me.]

Staring at those words, everything felt absurd beyond belief.

I slowly lifted my gaze toward the woman sitting across from me, sipping black tea with effortless elegance—my own mother, safe and sound right here in Miami.

Mom noticed my distant stare and arched an eyebrow. “Did that jerk Vito annoy you again?”

I didn’t answer, just stared back down at my screen.

My mother was sitting inches away in Miami. So who was the woman bleeding out on the front steps of that New York estate?

I zoomed the photo in, again and again.

Her face was caked in blood, most of her body exposed where she’d been dragged to the ground.

But I spotted it instantly: that one-of-a-kind string of Sicilian ruby rosary beads wrapped around her wrist.

It was Madam Maria, Vito’s own mother, the old Sicilian matriarch who never took those beads off.

My phone buzzed next; Gina was calling me. I hit accept and tapped record without hesitation.

“Cecilia, have you received the gift I sent you?” Gina’s arrogant laughter came through the phone, carrying an air of condescending generosity.

I took a deep breath, suppressing the grin that wanted to appear on my lips. I said coldly, “Gina, do you even know who you just hit?”

“Of course, it’s your shameless mother!”

Gina sneered, her tone filled with disdain. “What, you feel sorry for her? That old woman from the countryside? How dare she set foot in the mansion that Vito prepared for Sicily’s godmother? I just gave her a few blows with a golf club, and she pretended to be dead.”

“I warn you, Cecilia!”

Gina’s voice suddenly rose, filled with menace. “This villa was prepared by Vito specifically to welcome Madam Madam Maria! Whoever dares to mess it up will be killed by me!”

I listened quietly as she frantically stacked buffs, my gaze growing colder by the second.

“Are you sure that the person lying on the ground is my mom?” I asked one last time.

“Nonsense! Wearing such tattered clothes—who else could it be but your poor, miserable mother?”

Gina snorted impatiently. “Get back here and drag that old thing away. Don’t mess up Vito’s territory!”

Doo—

The call was hung up.

I didn’t waste a single second. I booked the earliest flight out while dialing Vito’s private line.

It rang forever before he picked up, blaring loud party music and clinking wine glasses in the background.

“Vito—mom’s at the new mansion, Gina attacked her. You need to send men over right now—”

“Save it, I already know what you’re gonna whine about,” Vito cut me off sharply. “I think Gina did exactly what needed to be done.”

I froze. “What did you just say?”

Vito sighed, sounding annoyed and patronizing. “Cecilia, we’re married, sure, but your mother needs to learn basic boundaries. She can’t ride your marriage to dig for cash and leech off me nonstop.”

I started to get a little impatient: “You’ve got it wrong—she’s your…”

“Enough!”

Vito said impatiently:

“So what if she’s my mother-in-law? I’m under no obligation to put up with her greed.”

“Gina taught her a lesson to make her remember it—it was for her own good.”

His words drained every ounce of urgency and warmth from my bones.

My mom grew up in a tiny rural town, but she’s always been gentle and honest, never once tried to take advantage of anyone—least of all Vito.

Vito started from scratch in the underworld using all of my mother’s retirement savings—money she had set aside over more than a decade.

When he told her he was short on cash, she handed him the entire sum without even asking any questions, and she never asked him what he was going to use it for.

He was often injured and always covered in scars. My mother climbed more than a dozen mountains to find medicinal herbs to apply to his wounds, saying this was an old folk remedy she’d learned from villagers when she was a child, and that it was guaranteed to heal his wounds.

I’d watch her sweat through every climb just to patch him up, grinning soft and proud when he thanked her—and as his wife, I’d always felt ashamed I couldn’t love him half as selflessly as she did.

“Vito,” I said, struggling to hold back my sadness, “Mom seems to be seriously injured. I suggest you have someone take her to the hospital right away—after all, it wasn’t easy for her to raise you all these years.”

"Like hell am I giving it to you!"

Vito roared down the phone, “Are you out of your mind? When did your mother ever take care of me? Does she even deserve for me to visit her?”

“Cecilia, listen to me—Gina was right! Trespassing on the mafia Hale family’s private land, ruining the welcome party I planned for my own mother? She got off light just getting beaten.”

"My mom's coming back from abroad any minute now, and I've got to plan a surprise for her and throw a welcome dinner. I don't have time to deal with your messy, pointless nonsense."

After saying that, Vito hung up the phone.

On the ride to the airport, I saw Vito post to his social feed.

Just one short line:

My mother is coming home at last, so I’ll finally be able to take good care of her.

I silently gave it a thumbs-up.

I tapped the like button silently.

Leaning back into the seat, I stared at the blood-soaked photo on my phone, a frigid, bitter smirk tugging at my lips.

Vito, I gave you every chance to fix this.

You slammed the door shut on saving your own mother all by yourself.

I wondered how this self-proclaimed devoted son would react, once he found out his side piece had brutalized the woman he claimed to worship more than anything.
