Chapter 11 THE CHOOSEN ONE
The giant four-eyed creature stood in the middle of the ruined battlefield like a living nightmare. Smoke drifted around its enormous body while shattered buildings burned behind it. The original Alpha struggled to rise from the rubble several hundred meters away, its body covered in wounds that refused to heal as quickly as before. Across Ashvale, both the infected and the surviving soldiers had fallen silent. The battle that had consumed the city moments earlier no longer mattered. Every eye was fixed on the newcomer. Ethan stood on the hill with Marcus, Rachel, Sophia, Tyler, and Victor, his heart hammering against his ribs as the creature's four glowing eyes remained locked on him.
The monster had spoken directly to him. It had crossed an entire battlefield with nothing but a glance and a single sentence. Found you. Those two words continued echoing inside his mind. Around him, the golden veins beneath his skin pulsed brighter than ever before. The burning sensation he had been fighting since the beginning of the outbreak was becoming impossible to ignore. It felt as though something inside him was waking up, something ancient and powerful that had remained asleep his entire life. Victor noticed the glow immediately and stepped backward.
Rachel noticed it too. So did everyone else. Fear mixed with uncertainty on their faces. Ethan hated it. He hated the way people looked at him now. He hated the way the infected reacted to him. Most of all, he hated the fact that he was beginning to wonder if the ancient being had been telling the truth all along.
The four-eyed Alpha took another step forward. The ground cracked beneath its weight. Buildings already weakened by explosions collapsed completely. A deep growl rumbled through the city and thousands of infected creatures lowered themselves further. The display of obedience sent a chill through Ethan's body. Even the original Alpha had lowered its head. The king that had terrorized Ashvale was bowing before something stronger.
The realization made Ethan understand how little he truly knew about the pandemic. Everything he had learned so far was only a small piece of a much larger truth. Suddenly the four-eyed creature lifted its head toward the dark sky and released a roar powerful enough to shake the clouds. The sound rolled across the city like thunder. Far beyond Ashvale, distant roars answered. One after another. Then dozens more. Ethan felt the blood drain from his face. Those sounds were too far away to belong to anything inside the city.
Whatever had answered the call was coming from outside Ashvale. The creature was not alone. The battlefield immediately descended into panic. Soldiers abandoned defensive positions. Military vehicles turned around. Commanders screamed orders into radios. Everyone understood the same thing. Reinforcements were coming and they were not human.
The Signal in the Blood
Ethan suddenly dropped to one knee as another wave of pain exploded through his body. The golden veins spread farther across his arms. His vision blurred. For a moment the world around him disappeared. In its place he saw something else. Endless darkness stretched in every direction. Massive golden structures rose from the void. Thousands of creatures knelt before a towering throne carved from black stone. The throne stood upon a mountain of shattered weapons and broken armor.
Seated upon it was a figure hidden by shadows. Ethan recognized the scene instantly. It was the same vision he had witnessed during his transformation. The same throne. The same kingdom. This time, however, the shadow moved. Slowly the figure rose from the throne and began walking toward him. Each step echoed through the darkness. Ethan tried to move but his body refused to respond. The figure continued approaching until it stood directly before him. Golden eyes glowed beneath the shadows. Then the darkness faded. Ethan gasped and found himself back on the hill. Marcus was holding his shoulder.
Rachel was shouting something. Sophia looked terrified. The pain slowly subsided but the fear remained. The vision had felt too real. Too personal. Almost as though someone had been trying to communicate with him. Before he could process what had happened, the four-eyed Alpha looked directly at him once more and smiled. The expression was not friendly. It was the smile of a hunter finally cornering its prey.
"We do not have much time," Victor said. His voice sounded tense. "Whatever that thing wants, we cannot stay here and find out."
Ethan looked toward the battlefield. The original Alpha had finally managed to stand. Blood covered its fur. Deep wounds lined its body. Yet instead of attacking the larger creature again, it simply watched. The king of Ashvale knew it could not win. That realization disturbed Ethan more than he wanted to admit.
The Fall of the Military
A deafening explosion suddenly erupted near the center of the battlefield. One of the military's largest tanks vanished beneath a fireball. Another exploded seconds later. Soldiers scattered as infected creatures surged through the broken defensive lines. The arrival of the four-eyed Alpha had shattered what little hope remained. Ethan watched helicopters attempt to retreat only for enormous winged creatures to emerge from the smoke and drag them from the sky.
Flaming wreckage rained across the city. Everywhere he looked, humanity was losing ground. The infected were no longer acting like mindless monsters. They moved with purpose. With strategy. With coordination. The pandemic was evolving and humanity was falling behind. Then something unexpected happened. The four-eyed Alpha lowered its head.
Not toward the original Alpha.
Not toward the infected army.
Toward Ethan.
The battlefield froze. Thousands of infected creatures watched. The original Alpha watched.
Even the surviving soldiers seemed unable to look away. The giant creature's voice rolled across the city.
"Come."
The single word carried enough force to make the air vibrate. Ethan remained where he was. The creature's eyes narrowed.
"Come." This time the command sounded less like a request and more like an order.
Rachel grabbed Ethan's arm.
"Don't." Marcus nodded immediately.
"Whatever happens, don't go near that thing."
Deep down Ethan agreed. Every instinct screamed at him to run. Yet another part of him felt something different. A strange pull. A connection. As though invisible chains stretched between him and the creature. The sensation terrified him because it felt familiar. It felt exactly like the connection he had sensed between the Alpha and the infected. Whatever was happening inside his body was getting stronger.
Dark clouds rolled across the sky. Lightning flashed above the city. Strong winds swept through the burning streets. The entire battlefield seemed to hold its breath. Then distant roars echoed once more. Louder this time. Closer. The creatures answering the four-eyed Alpha's call were approaching Ashvale. Ethan could feel it. The infected could feel it too. Excitement spread through their ranks. Anticipation. Expectation. They were waiting for something Or someone.
The four-eyed Alpha slowly raised one claw and pointed directly at Ethan. The gesture seemed simple enough yet the reaction it caused was immediate. Every infected creature in sight turned toward him. Thousands of glowing eyes locked onto a single target. Marcus tightened his grip on his shotgun. Rachel raised her weapon. Victor cursed under his breath. Sophia pulled Tyler behind her. The city itself felt alive.
Then the four-eyed Alpha spoke words that made Ethan's blood run cold.
"The last king has awakened."
The golden veins beneath Ethan's skin erupted with light.
And every infected creature in Ashvale dropped to its knees.
