Chapter 4 THE SHELTER INSIDE THE DARKNESS

Into the Darkness, The roar continued to echo across Ashvale long after the giant beast closed its mouth. Ethan felt the sound deep inside his chest as though the creature had reached into his body and squeezed his heart with invisible claws. The city responded with tons of noise all around them. The noise came from every direction. Rooftops. Streets. Alleyways. Buildings. It was impossible to tell how many monsters were hiding in the darkness, but Ethan knew one thing for certain. There were far more than he had imagined.

“Move,” Marcus barked.

Nobody argued.

The four survivors ran across the empty highway. The younger boy struggled to keep up, but the teenage girl grabbed his hand and pulled him forward. Their footsteps echoed along the empty road while the distant fires painted the night sky in shades of orange and red.

Ethan glanced back, but the giant beast was gone. The rooftop stood empty.

That frightened him more, at least when he could see the creature; he knew where it was. Now it could be anywhere; the thought sent a chill down his spine. They crossed several ruined streets before reaching a narrow tunnel beneath an overpass. Marcus led them inside without hesitation. Darkness swallowed them almost immediately.

The air smelled damp; water dripped from cracked concrete.

The boy stumbled over loose debris.

“How much farther?” he whispered.

“Not far,” Marcus replied.

The answer did little to comfort anyone. Every sound felt amplified inside the tunnel. Every shadow seemed alive. Ethan tightened his grip around the metal pipe and kept moving.

Then a scream echoed from somewhere ahead; everyone halted. The scream lasted only a few seconds before breaking off.

The boy’s face turned pale.

“What was that?”

Nobody answered.

The Cost of Survival

The tunnel eventually opened into an underground maintenance station. Broken machinery filled the large chamber while old electrical cables hung from the ceiling. Ethan immediately noticed they weren’t alone.

Several dozen survivors occupied the station; some sat against walls, others huddled together beneath blankets, a few stared blankly into space. The expressions on their faces told stories that words never could.

Fear, exhaustion, and grief.

A woman rocked back and forth while clutching an empty baby blanket; an elderly man stared at a photograph with tears streaming down his face. Nobody looked hopeful; nobody looked safe.

Marcus approached a group gathered near a portable lantern; a muscular woman stood when she saw him.

“You made it back.”

“Barely.”

She noticed Ethan and the others.

“New arrivals?”

Marcus nodded.

The woman crossed her arms.

“My name is Rachel. If you’re here, then follow the rules.”

Ethan frowned.

“What rules?”

“Nobody steals.”

Fair enough.

“Nobody starts fights.”

Also fair.

Rachel’s expression hardened.

“And if someone gets infected, they leave immediately.”

Things got quiet after that sentence; everyone understood why. The infected didn’t stay human for long. Ethan had seen enough already to know that.

Rachel pointed toward an empty corner.

“You can rest there.”

Rest.

The word sounded almost ridiculous; how could anyone rest while monsters ruled the city outside?

Still, Ethan followed the others; his body felt exhausted, every muscle ached, his stomach growled from hunger. The day had felt like a lifetime.

The boy sat beside him.

“My name is Tyler.”

Ethan nodded.

“Ethan.”

The teenage girl introduced herself next.

“Sophia.”

Neither spoke much after that because everyone was too tired. For a few moments, the underground shelter felt almost peaceful; then the coughing started.

Infection

A man near the opposite wall doubled over suddenly; the coughs came fast, violent, and wet.

Blood splattered across the floor, everybody immediately backed away; as blood spread through the room like wildfire, the man’s wife grabbed his shoulders.

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“No, no, no.”

The infected man collapsed onto his knees; dark veins crawled beneath his skin.

Ethan had seen those veins before in his father; the woman began crying. Rachel approached slowly, pain filled her eyes; nobody wanted this responsibility, yet someone had to make the decision.

“You know the rules.”

The woman shook her head desperately.

“He’ll get better.”

“He won’t.”

Quietly and mercifully, the answer came. The woman continued crying. The infected man suddenly let out a guttural growl, a sound no human should ever make. Rachel raised her weapon.

The shelter fell silent; nobody moved, nobody breathed. A single gunshot shattered the stillness, and the infected man collapsed.

The woman screamed, several children began crying.

Ethan looked away, his stomach twisted violently. The reality of the pandemic struck him harder than ever, nobody was coming to save them. There would be no miracle rescue.

No sudden cure, only survival, and survival demanded sacrifices.

The Broadcast

Hours later most survivors had fallen asleep. Ethan couldn’t; every time he closed his eyes he saw his father’s face, his mother’s scarf, the giant beast and the infected man.

Sleep felt impossible. He wandered toward an old communication room near the back of the station. Dust covered most of the equipment, but one machine still flickered weakly.

Static filled the room; curiosity drew him closer, he; adjusted several controls.

The static changed and voices emerged. Broken fragments at first; then clearer. A military transmission.

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“Containment has failed.”

Static interrupted the message.

“We repeat. Containment has failed.”

Another burst of interference followed, then a different voice spoke.

“The Alpha specimen has moved again.”

Ethan froze, Alpha specimen, the giant beast. The voice continued.

“All units are ordered to avoid direct engagement.”

Static.

“The target displays abnormal intelligence.”

Static.

“Do not provoke it.”

Ethan stared at the machine, abnormal intelligence. The words echoed through his mind.

The creature wasn’t simply leading the wolves; it was thinking, planning; or perhaps even understanding. A loud crash suddenly echoed somewhere above and the transmission died instantly.

Silence returned; then came another crash; it was closer this time. Ethan’s blood ran cold.

The Breach

The first scream erupted from the main chamber, then anotherand several more. Ethan sprinted from the communication room; Chaos greeted him instantly, everybody ran in every direction, children cried, people shouted warnings. Rachel stood near the tunnel entrance firing her weapon repeatedly.

The wolves had found them. A massive creature crashed through the barricade.

The wood splintered, and the beast landed among the survivors and immediately attacked.

Blood sprayed across the floor; panic consumed the shelter. Marcus fired his shotgun.

Sophia dragged Tyler toward safety; Ethan grabbed his metal pipe and charged forward before fear could stop him.

The wolf turned toward him, golden eyes burned with murderous intent. The creature lunged.

Ethan swung the pipe and it connected with the beast’s jaw, pain shot through his arms.

The wolf staggered.

Then something impossible happened, a burning sensation erupted beneath Ethan’s skin;his veins glowed faintly gold.

The creature froze, Its eyes widened, for the briefest mmoment,it looked confused and afraid.

Then every wolf inside the shelter suddenly stopped attacking.

The monsters backed away, one step, then another as though they had seen something terrifying.

A low growl echoed from outside and every wolf immediately retreated. They abandoned the attack and disappeared into the darkness beyond the tunnel; everybody stood frozen.

Nobody understood what had happened, not even Ethan.

The burning sensation faded quickly and his veins returned to normal, but dozens of eyes now stared directly at him. Rachel lowered her weapon slowly.

Marcus looked shocked, Sophia’s mouth hung open.

And deep beneath the city as distant howls echoed through the darkness, the giant beast known as the Alpha lifted its head toward the night sky and opened its glowing eyes.

It had finally found the human it had been searching for.
