Chapter 5 THE CHOOSEN BLOOD

Questions Without Answers

Silence lingered inside the underground shelter long after the wolves retreated. Nobody celebrated. Nobody cheered. The survivors simply stared at the shattered entrance and the blood staining the concrete floor. A few minutes earlier they had been certain death was upon them. Now the monsters had vanished without explanation.

Ethan stood in the center of the chamber gripping the metal pipe so tightly that his knuckles turned white. His breathing remained uneven. The strange burning sensation beneath his skin had disappeared, yet the memory of it refused to leave his mind.

The wolves had stopped because of him; he knew it and everyone else seemed to know it too. Rachel approached first. Her expression remained cautious.

"What happened?"

Ethan shook his head.

"I don't know."

"You expect us to believe that?"

"I said I don't know."

The answer came sharper than intended. Rachel studied him for several seconds before finally looking away; Marcus stepped forward.

"Whatever happened, those creatures were ready to tear us apart."

His gaze hardened.

"Then they saw something."

Ethan remained silent; the shelter filled with whispers; people exchanged nervous glances some looked at Ethan with gratitude others looked at him with fear. Neither reaction made him comfortable.

The Return of Hope

Morning arrived without sunlight. Thick clouds covered the sky above Ashvale and transformed the city into a gray wasteland. The survivors emerged cautiously from the underground station to search for supplies. Food had become their greatest concern. The shelter housed nearly fifty people and their remaining provisions would barely last another two days.

Rachel organized several teams; Marcus joined one group Sophia joined another. Ethan intended to help but Rachel stopped him.

"You stay here."

"Why?"

She hesitated.

"Because if those things come back, we may need you."

The statement irritated him.

"I'm not some weapon."

"No."

Rachel glanced toward the ruined tunnel entrance.

"But whatever happened last night wasn't normal."

Ethan had no response, deep down he agreed; nothing about this pandemic felt normal anymore. As the day progressed, more survivors arrived at the shelter. Most came alone. Some carried injuries. Others carried stories.

Entire neighborhoods had disappeared, military checkpoints had fallen, hospitals had become death traps. The infection continued spreading faster than anyone could contain; one elderly survivor spoke about seeing hundreds of wolves moving together through the city. Another claimed the creatures were gathering around an abandoned research facility near the outskirts of Ashvale. Most dismissed the story as fear-driven imagination but Ethan didn't. Something about it felt important.

The Message

By afternoon Ethan found himself back inside the communication room. The broken equipment continued crackling with static. Since discovering the military transmission, he couldn't stop thinking about it.

Alpha specimen, abnormal intelligence; the words repeated endlessly inside his mind. He adjusted the controls again, static filled the room.

Then suddenly a weak voice emerged.

"This is Commander Hayes."

The transmission crackled.

"If anyone receives this message, avoid Sector Nine."

Ethan leaned closer; the signal faded briefly before returning.

"The Alpha is gathering infected specimens.

"The creature is evolving."

Ethan's pulse quickened.

Evolving, the commander continued.

"We believe the virus originated from biological experimentation conducted at Blackthorn Research Facility."

The signal crackled violently.

"Destroy all data."

"Do not let the Alpha reach the laboratory."

Then silence returned, Ethan stared at the machine.

Blackthorn Research Facility and for the first time since the outbreak began, he had a lead, a destination, a possible source. The pandemic hadn't come from nowhere, someone had created it.

The Hunter

That evening another survivor arrived. Unlike the others, he walked into the shelter carrying confidence instead of fear, he appeared to be in his late thirties. A scar stretched across one side of his face. A rifle hung across his back and several knives rested along his belt.

The room grew quiet as he entered, Rachel approached cautiously.

"Who are you?"

The man removed his gloves.

"Victor Kane."

Nobody recognized the name, Victor glanced around the shelter before his eyes settled on Ethan and for a moment his expression changed. Recognition flashed across his face then it disappeared.

"You."

Ethan frowned.

"What about me?"

Victor ignored the question instead, he turned toward Rachel.

"We need to talk."

The two moved aside, their conversation remained quiet. Still, Ethan noticed Rachel's expression becoming increasingly serious, eventually she returned.

"What did he want?"

Rachel crossed her arms.

"He says military forces are hunting someone."

Ethan's stomach tightened.

"Who?"

"You."

The shelter immediately erupted with whispers, Ethan felt every eye turn toward him.

"What are you talking about?"

Victor stepped forward.

"They've been searching the city for an immune survivor."

Silence followed as nobody moved, nobody spoke Victor continued

"Word spread through military channels several days ago. A teenager exposed to the virus multiple times without infection."

Ethan's pulse quickened, the information should have been impossible only a handful of people knew about his immunity yet somehow the military already knew. Victor's gaze never left him.

"Looks like I found him."

The Truth

Hours later Ethan sat with Victor near the communication room. Most survivors had gone to sleep.

"What do they want from me?"

Victor stared at the lantern between them.

"A cure."

The answer seemed obvious yet something about his tone felt wrong.

"That's all?"

Victor laughed quietly.

"No."

The single word sent unease crawling through Ethan's chest.

"They want control."

The hunter leaned forward.

"Imagine being the only person capable of producing a cure."

Ethan remained silent.

"Governments would kill for that power."

The statement wasn't comforting.

Victor sighed.

"The pandemic changed everything. Nations are collapsing. Military chains of command are breaking apart. Whoever controls the cure controls the future."

The realization settled heavily over Ethan, he wasn't just surviving anymore, People were hunting him.

The military, the infected and perhaps others he hadn't even discovered yet all because of something flowing through his blood.

The Awakening

Near midnight the shelter shook violently, dust rained from the ceiling several survivors woke instantly a second impact followed as panic spread through the underground station.

Rachel grabbed her weapon.

"What was that?"

Nobody answered, the fourth impact came louder than the others, concrete cracked, lights flickered, then part of the ceiling collapsed, screams erupted as people rushed toward safety. Ethan looked upward just as a massive claw punched through the concrete.

The shelter froze, the claw withdrew for a moment silence returned, then the entire ceiling exploded inward. Debris crashed across the chamber, dust filled the air.

Children cried as everyone scattered, A gigantic shape descended through the opening.

Black fur, golden veins, glowing eyes.

The Alpha.

The giant beast landed in the center of the shelter with enough force to shake the entire structure. Every survivor backed away as fear filled the room.

The Alpha ignored them all, its glowing eyes focused entirely on Ethan. The monster slowly stepped forward.

One step then  another but nobody dared attack nor dared to move. The creature stopped only a few feet away, its enormous head lowered, its eyes burned brighter than molten gold. Then, to everyone's horror, the Alpha opened its mouth and spoke in a voice that sounded almost human.

"Ethan."

The shelter fell silent.

The beast knew his name.

And judging by the intelligence burning behind those glowing eyes, this meeting was not an accident. Ethan had finally come face to face with the true king of the pandemic.
