Chapter 8 THE TRANSFORMATION
The Blood Awakens
Silence swallowed the underground shelter after the ancient being spoke those final words. Nobody moved. Nobody dared speak. The survivors stood frozen as the meaning of those words settled heavily over them. Ethan remained where he was, staring at the faint golden veins spreading beneath his skin. Until now he had believed his immunity was a gift. Something that made him different from everyone else. Something that allowed him to survive while others fell victim to the pandemic. Now that belief had been shattered.
He wasn't immune he was transforming, the thought refused to leave his mind; his pulse quickened, heat flowed through his veins like liquid fire; the sensation was growing stronger with every passing minute.
Ethan clenched his fists.
"What am I becoming?"
The ancient being studied him silently. Its glowing eyes seemed capable of seeing far beyond flesh and bone, far beyond the present.
"You are becoming what humanity feared."
The answer only created more questions as fear spread through the shelter. Several survivors backed away from Ethan, others stared at him as though seeing him for the first time. Rachel stepped forward despite the tension.
"What does that mean?"
The ancient being turned toward her, for a moment Ethan thought she might regret asking instead the creature answered calmly.
"The virus was never a disease, the statement echoed through the chamber.
"The virus is a key."
Nobody understood what he was saying but the being continued.
"It awakens dormant traits hidden within living organisms."
Victor frowned.
"Then why are people dying?"
The creature remained expressionless; Because most bodies cannot survive the change."
Silence followed, the answer was horrifying, people weren't being infected they were failing; the realization made Ethan's stomach twist. Millions could already be dead; not because of a disease rather because evolution itself was killing them.
A tremendous explosion shook the shelter as the military battle raging above ground was becoming increasingly violent. Distant screams echoed through the tunnel entrance. The city was still fighting for survival the wolf looked upward. Its expression remained calm as though human suffering meant very little to it.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Why is this happening?"
The creature looked directly at him.
"Because humanity dug too deep."
The answer sent a chill through his body, the being slowly walked toward the glowing chasm, golden light swirled around its feet.
"For thousands of years we slept beneath the earth because the surface belonged to humanity, then your species found us , they cut into our resting places; they extracted our blood, they attempted to weaponize evolution."
Victor cursed under his breath, the pieces were beginning to fit together. Blackthorn Research Facility hadn't discovered a virus they had discovered something ancient, Something humanity was never meant to touch.
Suddenly a soldier stumbled into the shelter.
Blood covered his uniform, his face was pale. His breathing came in ragged gasps, several survivors rushed toward him, the man collapsed onto his knees.
"They're everywhere; infected have overrun half the city and we can't stop them."
Rachel knelt beside him.
"What happened?"
The soldier swallowed hard.
"The wolves aren't acting randomly."
His voice trembled.
"They're coordinated."
Ethan immediately thought about the Alpha.
The giant beast wasn't simply controlling a pack anymore it was commanding an army. The soldier looked toward the ancient being. His face drained of color.
"What is that?"
The man slowly backed away, terror consumed him. Before anyone could stop him he turned and ran toward the tunnel entrance, the ancient being watched him leave, then it spoke quietly.
"He will not survive the night."
Nobody questioned the statement, something about the creature's voice made it sound less like a prediction and more like a certainty.
Victor approached Ethan; the experienced hunter looked more serious than ever.
"We need to leave." Rachel nodded immediately.
"The shelter isn't safe anymore."
The ceiling continued cracking as the battle outside was getting closer. Remaining underground would only delay the inevitable.
Sophia gathered supplies, Marcus checked his shotgun. The survivors began preparing for evacuation; meanwhile Ethan remained focused on the ancient being; the creature stood beside the glowing chasm.
"What happens now?" Ethan asked.
The being looked at him.
"Now you choose."
Confusion crossed Ethan's face.
"Choose what?"
The creature raised one hand, golden energy swirled around its fingers.
"Your future."
The answer made little sense. Before Ethan could ask another question a deafening roar erupted from outside. The Alpha, the sound shook the shelter; the ancient being slowly lowered its hand.
"It has come."
The Return of the King
The roar grew louder and closer, everybody immediately tensed; weapons were raised, fear spread throughout the chamber as heavy footsteps echoed from the tunnel entrance.
The Alpha emerged moments later its black fur was stained with blood, deep wounds covered parts of its body. Several bullets remained lodged beneath its skin, yet none of the injuries appeared fatal, the giant beast entered the shelter and immediately lowered its head toward the ancient being.
The creature examined the wounds.
"You fought them."
The Alpha growled softly.
The being nodded.
"The soldiers always resist."
The giant wolf slowly turned toward Ethan. Its glowing eyes narrowed, something had changed.
The hostility Ethan usually sensed was gone, now the Alpha seemed curious almost protective.
The ancient being noticed, “It recognizes your blood”
Ethan frowned.
"My blood?"
The creature nodded, the same blood flows through both of you."
Rachel stared, Victor cursed,Sophia looked horrified. Ethan himself struggled to process the statement.
"No."
He denied immediately, the ancient being remained calm.
"The transformation differs." It pointed toward the Alpha, It evolved first. Then it pointed toward Ethan, You evolved differently, the implications were terrifying.
The Choice
Outside the city continued burning, distant sounds of battle echoed through the darkness.
Humanity was losing and everyone knew it. The ancient being looked toward the tunnel entrance. Then back toward Ethan.
"The next stage approaches." Golden veins beneath Ethan's skin suddenly pulsed. Pain exploded through his body. He dropped to one knee. A scream escaped his lips. The heat returned stronger than ever.
His vision blurred as his heartbeat accelerated.
Every nerve felt as though it were on fire. The survivors backed away, fear spread through the chamber.
The Alpha watched carefully and the ancient being remained calm.
"Do not resist."
Ethan gritted his teeth as the pain intensified.
His veins glowed brighter, the shelter filled with golden light. Cracks spread across the concrete beneath him; something was changing. The ancient being stepped closer its glowing eyes never left his face.
"The transformation has begun."
Ethan could barely hear the words.
The pain consumed everything; then the visions returned, this time they were clearer and stronger He saw the ancient civilization again. He saw countless creatures kneeling before a massive throne carved from black stone. And seated upon that throne was a figure hidden beneath shadows.
A king. the ruler of an entire species. Then the shadow slowly lifted its head.
Ethan's breath caught; the face staring back at him was his own; the vision shattered instantly.
He opened his eyes and the pain vanished.
Silence filled the shelter as ever stared at him. Then Marcus pointed upward.
Ethan!!
His voice shook; Ethan looked confused.
"What?"
Marcus swallowed hard, his face had turned pale.
"Your eyes."
A nearby piece of broken metal reflected Ethan's image; He looked down and he froze immediately;
Both of his eyes were glowing gold !!
