Chapter 9 THE WAR 1

Nobody spoke, the underground shelter remained completely silent as Ethan stared at his reflection in the twisted piece of metal. The glowing golden eyes staring back at him did not feel real. They looked like the eyes of the Alpha. The eyes of the ancient being. The eyes of something that no longer belonged among ordinary humans.

His breathing quickened, the golden glow pulsed faintly; then it slowly faded. When the light disappeared, his eyes returned to normal. At least on the surface. The fear in everyone's faces remained. Rachel took an unconscious step backward, Sophia looked away. Several survivors tightened their grip on their weapons.

Ethan noticed every reaction.

For the first time since the outbreak began, people were looking at him the same way they looked at the infected.

The realization hurt more than he expected.

"I'm still me."

The words sounded weak but nobody answered.

The ancient being watched quietly its expression remained unreadable; then the creature finally spoke.

"For now."

The response sent a chill through the shelter. Ethan turned sharply.

"What does that mean?" The ancient being looked toward the glowing chasm.

"It means your transformation is accelerating." The answer only deepened the fear growing inside him.

Hours later the survivors finally left the shelter.

The underground station was no longer safe.

The cracks spreading through the structure continued growing larger and larger. Every few minutes another section of concrete collapsed into the glowing abyss below.

Remaining there meant death. The group emerged onto the streets of Ashvale beneath a dark sky stained by smoke and fire. The city was dying. Entire blocks had been reduced to rubble.

Abandoned vehicles clogged the roads. Buildings burned unchecked. The smell of ash drifted through the air.

Ethan had grown up in Ashvale so he knew every street, every corner and shortcut. Now he barely recognized it. The world he once knew no longer existed. A helicopter roared overhead.

The aircraft suddenly burst into flames. Everyone watched as it spiraled downward before crashing into a distant building. The explosion illuminated half the skyline, humanity was losing.

Marcus led the survivors through a maze of ruined streets.

According to information gathered from military broadcasts, a fortified evacuation zone had been established near the southern edge of the city.

If they could reach it, they might finally find answers.

Food, medicine, Safety and Hope. The journey would not be easy. The infected controlled most of Ashvale now. Every shadow felt dangerous.

Every distant sound carried the promise of death.

As they moved deeper into the city, Ethan noticed something strange.

The infected ignored him; several times they encountered wandering victims of the pandemic.

People whose bodies had partially transformed.

People whose eyes glowed faintly gold. Each time the infected looked directly at Ethan.

Then turned away. The pattern repeated again and again. Rachel noticed it too.

"So they really can sense it."

Ethan didn't answer, because deep down he already knew. The infected recognized something inside him. Something human eyes could not see.

THE AMBUSH

The attack came without warning.

One moment the survivors were crossing an abandoned intersection. The next moment gunfire erupted from nearby rooftops. Bullets slammed into the pavement.

Everyone dove for cover.

"Down!"

Marcus pulled Tyler behind an overturned truck.

Sophia dropped beside a concrete barrier.

Rachel raised her weapon. Ethan threw himself behind a damaged vehicle. The shooting stopped then a voice echoed across the street.

"Drop your weapons."

Several figures appeared on nearby rooftops.

Armed men.

Their leader stepped forward; a scar crossed one side of his face. His black tactical armor appeared military in origin yet there was nothing official about him.

These weren't soldiers; they were survivors. Dangerous survivors.

"We don't want trouble," Marcus shouted.

The leader laughed.

"Everyone says that."

More armed figures emerged, at least twenty. The odds were terrible. The leader looked toward Ethan and his expression immediately changed

"Well now."

A smile appeared.

"I wasn't expecting to find you."

Ethan's stomach tightened.

The man pointed directly at him.

"Take him alive."

Gunfire erupted again as survivors scattered, Several of the armed men rushed forward. Ethan swung his metal pipe and struck one attacker across the jaw.

The man collapsed instantly. Another lunged at him. Ethan dodged and drove his elbow into the attacker's chest. The man crashed into the pavement, The fight intensified as shouts filled the air.

Bullets ricocheted off nearby walls.

The leader watched calmly from the rooftop.

Almost amused, Ethan fought desperately but there were too many enemies. The survivors were being overwhelmed, then something unexpected happened. The familiar burning sensation returned, heat surged through Ethan's body; His veins glowed beneath his skin.

Golden light flickered around his eyes; the attackers hesitated as fear appeared on their faces. Ethan felt stronger, Faster and Sharper. Every sound became clearer; Every movement easier to follow, the world itself seemed slower.

One attacker raised his weapon; Ethan moved.

In an instant he crossed the distance between them, the man never even had time to react.

Shock spread through the street; Even Ethan froze. He hadn't meant to move that fast the leader's smile vanished.

"What are you?"

The question echoed across the battlefield. Ethan didn't know the answer just immediately adistant howl suddenly rolled across the city.

The sound belonged to the Alpha, another howl followed. The calls spread rapidly through Ashvale; the infected were responding.

The armed survivors exchanged nervous glances.

The leader looked toward the horizon and for the first time fear appeared in his eyes.

Ethan felt the strange connection immediately.

Some instinct deep within him recognized what was happening. The infected were gathering purposefully.

The leader backed away immediately; We're leaving!! His men looked confused.

"But” they tried to question him,

"We're leaving!" Panic had replaced confidence. Without another word the armed survivors retreated. They disappeared into the ruined city moments before the first infected arrived. A pack of wolves emerged from the darkness.

The creatures flooded the streets; yet none attacked, they simply stood there watching.

The survivors stared in disbelief. Hundreds of glowing eyes filled the city. All focused on one person.

Ethan.

Marcus gripped his shotgun, Rachel looked ready to run, Sophia stood frozen. Tyler hid behind her. Ethan could barely process what he was seeing.

Then the pack parted; a path opened through the middle of the street. Heavy footsteps echoed from the darkness.

The Alpha emerged.

Its massive form towered over every other infected creature, the wolves immediately lowered themselves further.

The Alpha stopped before Ethan, Its glowing eyes studied him carefully. Then it looked toward the northern part of the city, toward the distant skyline. Toward something only it seemed able to sense, the giant beast growled softly sending a warning.

Then the Alpha spoke.

"The First One is waiting." A cold feeling spread through Ethan's chest.

The Alpha turned back toward him.

Its golden eyes burned brighter than ever.

Then it delivered words that made Ethan's blood run cold.

The war begins tonight!!!
