Chapter 3 Why am I bothered about her?

Nate POV

As soon as we give the book back to our contact, we head to the local pizza place. It’s decent enough and the servers are mostly guys, unlike the diner, where the women fall over themselves to seat our table and can’t seem to take a hint.

We’re sitting in the corner, minding our own business when she walks in. The human girl from the copy shop. The girl Atticus refuses to stop pushing images of into my mind since we left. He even suggested we go back and apologise to her, a weak little human. Some hope of that!

She doesn’t seem to notice us as she sits at the counter and waits for her order.

“You know…you should really apologise for being an ass. She’s right there and she’s alone.”

“Shut up, Danny. I’m not apologising to the weakling. She’s not my problem.”

“So, you don’t think she’s cute? I think she’s cute.” Leo clearly has a death wish tonight.

“Seriously, guys. Give it a rest already. She’s just some stupid human girl.”

A stupid human girl who spells incredible. Way better than any she-wolf I’ve ever smelt

Cut it out Atticus. She’s human. WE are not having anything to do with her. WE are going home tomorrow

We could take her with us

Don’t even think that. It’s not happening. She’s too weak

“Eh ehm…earth to Nate.” I was so trapped in my conversation with Atticus, I didn’t hear Leo calling to me. “

Sorry man, what did you say?”

“Oh, I just said that Danny is gone to apologise on your behalf.” I look up to see Danny approaching the little brunette at the counter. Fuck, why won’t he listen!

I listen in.

“Hi there, remember me? Danny. Look, I just wanted to come and apologise for the way my Al…my…Nate acted earlier. He’s not normally such a jerk. He really didn’t mean it.” I growl and turn in his direction, speaking loudly enough so they can both here me.

“Yes, Danny, I did!” she glares over at me silently.

“He really didn’t, he just suffers from a case of arrogant pride. He’s really a nice guy. His momma even says he’s lovable.” I’m going to kill my Gamma before this day is out. Leo spits out his water as he laughs hysterically.

“I highly doubt that but, thank you for the apology. You should let him know that when his looks run out, he’ll need to develop a personality.” She grabs her order from the counter, smiles sweetly at the old man and leaves, but not before glaring coldly in my direction again. It bothers me little that she doesn’t like me, but she’s human so who cares right?

Still, I can’t help wondering where she went when she left. Is she cosied up on a sofa somewhere with that asshole from earlier? FUCK!

Why am I bothered about her? Stupid human weakling.

I spend the next hour blocking out Danny’s barrage of advice on how to be nicer to humans. He even goes so far to suggest that I like the little weakling. No chance. It’s like the guy doesn’t know me at all.

Mark POV

I’ve been tracking these assholes for the syndicate since they arrived in Elwood three nights ago. They walked out of a remote part of the woods near Astral city two weeks ago carrying backpacks and looking like they owned the world, when they were spotted by the watchers. We’ve been following them since.

We know they aren’t human and our weak government is trying to keep us in the dark. We captured two of them a few months back. The fuckers were hiding in the woods near the city, watching two of our women. They tried to sell us some bullshit story about how they’re soulmates and meant to be together. Said the women wanted to be with them. Fucking women stealing monsters.

You can’t imagine how pissed I was when Bruce told me about the incident in the copyshop tonight and with my girl. The woman I have chosen for the war ahead. Bruce and I already agreed we’d share her until he can break Maisie. She’s not docile like Lily, not pliable and easy to keep in line. I’m not really going to share her though. I intend to have her all to myself. I just need her to understand what’s expected of her. I’m the man, I will make the decisions, and her only job will be to breed my own personal army. One that will ensure the human race prevails over these vermin in the woods.

My cell buzzes and I tell the others I’m leaving.

Allistair: They’re leaving the pizza place. Heard em’ talking about going home tomorrow. Got what they came for.

Mark: I’ll let the others know. Follow them, let me know if they try to leave. We take them out before they get to the woods.

Allistair: We’ll be ready.

My next call is to the syndicate leadership. After that I need to head home to gather supplies so I’m ready to take out these three assholes before they get away. I’ve been working on a special mixture just for them…
