Chapter 6 Mr Whitmore

Zarek's POV

It wasn't the first time I've had a girl on my thighs but the second Wren Hale lowered herself onto me, my wolf picked up this honey scent emitting from her and it seemed like I lost all composure.

Though surely, she didn't think just sitting on top of me would do the trick.

If it was anything, Lucien needed more to convince him.

So I snaked my arm around her slim waist and brought her chin closer to mine so I'd catch her lips.

They were soft and warm and in experience but the second it came into contact with mine, I forgot the door had just opened and focused on the weird tingle in felt and the way her fingers instinctively curled around my shirt.

Then…

“Ahem…” Lucien cleared his throat and we immediately broke it off slowly.

She pulled away and I could see how disheveled her brown long hair she tied to a perfect pony was, her green eyes avoiding my gaze as she turned to the door.

Lucien stood there, his hand was still on the door knob and the expression on his face told me he had seen enough.

I stared at my 6’0ft best friend with the dirty blonde hair and blue eyes and he stared back.

His dad was famously my dad's beta and society demanded the same from us.

“So it's true.”

I leaned back against the chair, trying to look like I hadn't just been caught kissing my fake girlfriend.

“To what do I owe the pleasure of your presence Ser Lucien?"

I caught the way his eyes lingered on Wren before moving towards me.

“It's your Father."

That wiped the amusement from my face.

“He's in the principal's office and they are calling for you.”

Of course he was.

My father couldn't even wait until I had finished one day of pretending my life wasn't falling apart.

Wren immediately rose up, she reached for the flashdrive.

“I'll be leaving now."

“I'll see you later." I replied.

She walked towards the door, briefly glancing at Lucien and mumbled something, the second she stepped out, Lucien closed the door behind him and stepped further into my room.

"So the rumors are actually true?” He dug his hands into his pockets.

I breathed and rose up from my chair, attending to my laptop.

"Any one would be surprised, so I get you.”

He suddenly laughed dryly. "Surprised? Mahn you're THE Zarek Whitmore, the biggest playboy in Ashford Academy and suddenly he has a girlfriend right after his sister dies?"

My jaw tightened at the mention of my sister but then rolled my eyes to hide my expression.

"You're making it sound worse than it is."

"Am I?" He pressed.

I didn't answer and then he spoke again.

"You know what people are saying?"

I picked up some frames from my desk and placed them in a drawer. "You know I don't care, Lucien"

"They think she's using her, you know what I think?"

That made me look at him, taking off my shirt and putting on a more casual one.

"I think you're grieving.” He said, his voice softened. "And I know it's hard, losing a sister, losing Serena." He stepped closer. " Having her here and the next day she's like… gone forever.” he paused. "I get that you're hurting. But that doesn't mean you get to drag someone else into it."

My fingers curled around the edge of the chair.

All that prep talk made me think of when I saw her body, how lifeless she looked.

No one knew how I felt, it was sickening to hear that they think they do.

I took off my wristwatch. "You sound very protective of her though.”

"What?"

“Wren." I turned back to him with a calm expression. “Why are you so protective of her?”

He scoffed and I noticed the way his expression hardened. “I'm not, I'm just saying she hasn't done anything wrong."

I gave him a look. "Do you have feelings for her?" I pressed

His eyes widened as he laughed hysterically. "What? No."

"Then what's the problem?" I took a step closer. "Why do you care if I'm leading her on or not?”

He combed his finger through his hair and dragged it all the way down his face. "Look I just know the girl, she's the head of the science club and she keeps to herself…

" I know, I was the one who sent you to join the club aren't I?”

“Zarek…

I held up a hand in the air. “No. I don't care and I don't want to hear it."

For some reason having him create such human sympathy for Wren annoyed me more than it should have.

"I'm dating her now, Lucien." Fixing the buttons on my shirt as I added like it was the simplest thing in the world. “And it's for a reason that's only concerned to me. So if the students from this fucked up school can't come to terms with the fact that we're dating then they can fuck off."

Lucian sighed, "Right.”

He stepped back towards the door. "I am sorry about Serena."

The building irritation inside me faltered.

"I really am." He continued. "We didn't see this coming and I know that makes it harder to deal with." He paused. “Just be careful Zarek.” He was staring directly at me, like he was daring me to break the gaze. "Don't make other people hurt just because you're hurting."

That sentence stayed in the air and I didn't like it.

Mostly because I didn't like the way he looked at me when he said it.

Like he already knew what kind of person I was.

Like he thought I was some heartless bastard who could kiss a girl one minute and forget about her the next.

Which I was. But still for some reason…

I didn't want Wren thinking that about me and for other reasons, I shouldn't care.

We both knew this was just some act to find out the truth, so it really didn't matter what anyone made of me.

Lucien left almost immediately, shutting the door right behind him.

For a few seconds, I just let the idea of my father waiting for me to sink in, then I exhaled calmly, I could already imagine the look on his face, the disappointment and the questions.

The lecture about Serena, about my behavior and the rumors.

Probably all of it wrapped neatly into one giant pile of bullshit.

I grabbed my jacket from the back of the chair as I straightened my shoulders.

Strangely, I could still taste Wren's lips on mine but then I shrugged it off and walked towards the door.

Time to face Mr Whitmore
