Chapter 5 Chapter 05

This didn’t make any sense, and before I could overthink it, Roman came in.

“What are you doing in my drawers?!” He sounded angry as he stepped toward me, and before I could tell him what I was looking for or mention the mysterious file, he grabbed it from my hand and shoved it back into the drawer, closing it quickly.

“That’s unacceptable, Gwen. You can’t just go through private documents like that.”

Again, his tone was full of anger, something that shocked me because, first of all, this was my office too. I could go through whatever I wanted.

“You changed the password to the computer.” I stepped away from the desk, standing by the guest side. “I wanted to look up something, and you always keep your passwords in the book you keep in the drawers, so–”

“It’s okay. I’m sorry I yelled.” He cut me off as he came to my side. “I’m sorry, love. I didn’t mean to.”

He pulled me close to him, and somehow, that relaxed me.

“I understand.” I nodded.

“There have been some problems. I had to change the passwords. I didn’t want to worry you, but we were almost hacked.”

“Oh, who would do that?” I pulled away so I could look him in the eyes because, honestly, who would hack office computers?

“They are still working on finding out who did it. Don’t worry about it.” He shrugged it off and tried to pull me close again, but I pulled away.

“I found a file on her.”

“Love, she was an employee here.”

“What? She worked here?”

“She just filed papers. That’s all. But she…” He paused. “I’m sorry, okay? I’ll get rid of it.”

“Okay.” I nodded slowly. “Um, the detective mentioned something weird. They found stab wounds on her, and I didn’t stab her. She just fell, and that’s all that happened.”

I explained what I remembered, but instead of showing even a little belief in me, Roman gave me a pitiful smile and then asked if I had eaten.

“I can take twenty minutes to eat.” He looked at his wristwatch. “You need to eat. You’re already becoming pale.”

“No, didn’t you hear me? Something is wrong. Someone is trying to frame me. I didn’t stab her. You saw her, right? There were no stab wounds on her. There wasn’t even a knife in sight.”

My eyes darted between his, and he just stood there looking like he wanted the ground to swallow him. He looked so stressed that he didn’t want to answer.

But I needed him to answer. I needed him to confirm what I remembered.

“Roman, you were left with her. You saw there were no stab wounds, right?”

“Love… let’s just go and eat.”

“Answer me, Roman. You saw her too, right?”

“Well…” He sighed. “You stabbed her.”

“What?!”

“Don’t worry. It was an accident. The detective will understand.” He assured me, but I was already shaking my head, tears burning my eyes.

“Listen, baby, you killed someone. That’s too much for you, I know. That’s why I want you to just relax and not think about it, okay?”

He wiped away the tears that had escaped before I could stop them.

“I… I don’t remember stabbing her.”

I honestly didn’t.

“I know, love, and I’m glad you don’t. That could take a toll on your mental health even more. That’s probably the reason your brain blocked it out.”

He pulled me closer into his arms, rubbing my back with his rough hand.

Now Roman might be right. I probably did stab her.

I mean, I was angry. It made sense that I did. Maybe my brain was trying to protect me by blocking that disturbing scene from my memory.

But now that the reality was settling in, I started sobbing, more tears burning my eyes.

“I stabbed someone. I stabbed her.” I cried.

Roman told me it was okay. He said it was a mistake and that he knew I wasn’t a bad person.

I stayed in Roman’s arms. He asked his assistant to bring us brunch, and he practically forced me to eat. I did, comforting myself with the fact that I had such an amazing husband.

It didn’t matter that she was his mistress. Other men would literally divorce my ass, calling me a danger, but Roman didn’t see me that way.

He saw his wife.

The mother of his children.

A woman who had made a mistake.

After eating, we stayed there for a while. Roman held me until I was calm, then escorted me downstairs, took me to the car and helped close the door.

He had to go back and attend some meetings while I was driven home by the driver.

But as soon as I was away from Roman, reality settled in again.

I knew my brain was probably doing me a favor, but I just had to remember. I had to know what made me even pick up the knife and stab her when she had already fainted.

Did she wake up and try to attack me?

Did I get the knife because I panicked and stabbed her right in the chest?

But the detective said five stab wounds.

What would make me repeatedly stab her?

“Reporter Elise Davis, twenty-five, was found dead in her apartment. Police refuse to give more information, but her death has been confirmed.”

“Could you please turn that up?” I sat up properly.

The driver had the radio news station on, and Elise Davis was the woman I had supposedly just killed.

“The young, passionate journalist died just two months after burying her fiancé, Oscar, who also died mysteriously. This is leaving speculation among netizens…”

The news reporter continued.

“Could it be that the person who killed her fiancé came for her too? Could that be the case?”

Hold on.

Oscar?

Her fiancé, Oscar, used to work for my company. Wait.

Roman had an affair with his employee’s fiancée?

And what killed Oscar, honestly? And now Elise?

I was suddenly wide awake. I was very sure I didn’t stab her.

Could someone have truly targeted the two of them?

Could there actually be some truth to this?

Something I didn’t even know about?
