Chapter 7 Chapter 07
My husband did it?
The detective had just accused my husband of stabbing Elise to death, and what was worse, I wasn't even surprised. It was like somehow, my soul already knew it.
“Mrs. Garcia, your husband killed Ms. Davis and set you up,” Leonardo said.
“No. Elise was his mistress. Why would he kill her? To save our marriage?” I laughed. He wouldn't just kill someone to save a marriage. That's not Roman.
“Like I said, Mrs. Garcia, I've been in this business for years. I want to believe I know a trap when I see one,” he insisted.
I shook my head, although I wasn't as confident anymore.
“Just think about this. Who else knew your schedule? Your clothes? You are rarely out, so it can't be just random people.”
“So you believe I'm not the lady in the footage? Buying the knife?”
“I believe if that's you, then your husband made you purchase it. But that's not you. Her shoulders are higher than yours,” he said.
I was glad he believed me, and I knew I shouldn't even be thinking about it, but he kind of had a point.
The way Roman had immediately jumped to the conclusion that I stabbed Elise while the detective had been hesitant was strange. It almost seemed like Roman wanted me to just accept the blame.
And my phone search history?
Who would make those searches if not Roman?
He had my passwords, and my kids were always around me. The boys had their own tablets, and I never let them play with my phone. Blossom was too little to even touch one.
But as much as I wanted to believe this, Roman had no motive.
There was always a motive.
Him simply wanting to get rid of Elise wasn't enough. Or rather, it didn't make any sense.
First, Elise was not only beautiful, but she was younger too. Men tended to protect their mistresses instead of their wives, didn't they?
So, no.
Roman didn't stab Elise.
The searches? Whoever did that probably hacked my phone and made them.
“If you're not going to arrest me, can I have my phone, please?” I stood up, ready to leave.
“Yes, of course. Here...” He fetched it from the drawer and pushed it toward me. “So...?”
“I don't know why you so badly want to pin this on my husband, but he didn't do it, okay?”
“Okay.”
Leonardo was so nonchalant about it. He didn't even argue with me, and somehow, that unsettled me more.
“I'm not about to play your game. Good day.” I quickly grabbed my phone.
“Wonderful day, Mrs. Garcia. We'll call when we need you.”
“I'd rather you didn't.”
“You were the last person with Ms. Davis. You don't have a choice here.”
His voice was firm now, showing the obvious anger that I wasn't supporting him in pinning the death on Roman.
“And oh...”
I stopped at the door.
“I added my contact there. Call me when you change your mind.”
“What did you save it as?” I asked, already going into my contacts.
“Detective Leonardo,” he replied quickly.
I searched the first letter, and as soon as I found the contact, I pressed the three dots and searched for the delete button.
I didn't stop there.
I went to the recycle bin and cleared it from there too.
Done.
I looked back at him, and he seemed to know exactly what I had just done. His face was completely blank.
Well, I said nothing.
I finally opened the door and left.
Outside, I rushed to the car and asked the driver to drive quickly.
He was fast. Soon, he was pulling up at my mansion, and I stepped out and literally ran inside.
“Baby, I was waiting for you.”
Roman was home.
His arms were wide open for me.
I looked around for any sign of the kids. It was only three in the afternoon. It wasn't even their nap time.
“Where's everyone?” I asked, my eyes still moving around the room, looking everywhere but at his eyes.
“We haven't had time for each other. I asked Maria to take the kids out so we could have some time together,” he said, coming closer.
Sure, he was right.
Roman hadn't been close to me like before since I gave birth to Blossom. We were practically like housemates who shared kids.
He would come home early, but that didn't mean he came home to spend time with the family.
Roman would usually come before eight. We would have dinner, and he would spend a few minutes with the boys, ten minutes at most. Then he would go to the bedroom, get on his computer, and work again.
“Is that your phone?” he asked as I held it in my hands.
I nodded.
“Didn't the police take it?”
“Yes, I... I got it back.”
“And they didn't find anything? Did you go to see them from my office? What did they say? Did they find something suspicious?”
Okay.
I replayed his words in my head.
The detective had probably planted that doubt in my head, but Roman being so invested in whether they had found something was strange.
It was almost like he knew there was something to find.
I walked to the couch.
“No,” I lied. “It's clean.”
“Are you sure?”
That made me look at him.
“I mean, I'm just... you know what? Sit here. Let me get you some fruit so you can eat while I set the table, okay?”
He helped me sit before planting a kiss on my forehead. Then he walked toward the kitchen.
Just as he disappeared, his phone screen lit up.
Completely out of habit since finding out he had an affair, I always checked his notifications.
Well, I looked toward the kitchen.
He was probably slicing the fruit, which was great because it gave me enough time.
I used my finger and unlocked the phone.
I had secretly added my fingerprint to it after he changed his password.
The first notification caught my attention.
‘Five million dollars worth of crypto have been deposited successfully into your blue wallet.’
Crypto?
When did he start investing in that?
Like, I'm his wife. He should have told me.
I almost put the phone away when another notification appeared.
‘Ten million dollars worth of crypto have been deposited successfully into your yellow wallet.’
“What the fuck?”
