Chapter 4 Why Are You So Cowardly?
Jane's POV
When I heard Nancy say I was the new maid, I felt the urge to rush up and slap her across the face.
Not because her appearance ruined my contract marriage, but because those eyes of hers were completely useless.
She actually thought I was the new maid?
After hearing Nancy's question, Andrew didn't answer directly. Instead, he raised his face toward me, letting me explain my own identity to Nancy.
I knew my place.
So I smiled slightly at Nancy and replied, "Ms. Gonzalez, I'm a maid the Lopez family just hired."
"I see."
Hearing that, Nancy couldn't help but respond softly. She looked me up and down, then pressed her soft body closer to Andrew.
Andrew shifted his body slightly.
"Andrew, this maid doesn't look very old. She's so young, can she really take good care of Mrs. Lopez?" Nancy questioned my credentials.
Andrew still didn't say anything.
I could tell Nancy was trying to give me a hard time.
As a proper maid, I wouldn't speak up without Andrew's instruction.
Seeing I wasn't responding to her, Nancy continued, "Coming to work as a maid at such a young age, you must have some ulterior motives, right?"
As she said this, she looked up at Andrew, as if suspecting there was something between Andrew and me.
Andrew demonstrated his loyalty. He reached out and wrapped his arm tightly around Nancy's shoulder, saying in an almost loving way, "In my heart, only you matter most."
Andrew's words made Nancy giggle coquettishly.
But to my ears, it felt like arrows piercing my heart. Andrew wasn't declaring his love to Nancy—he was reminding me that in his heart, I, Jane, was nothing.
After taking a deep breath, I adjusted my emotions.
I started fighting back against Nancy. "Ms. Gonzalez is overthinking it. I came to the Lopez family as a maid to take care of Mrs. Lopez, nothing else. After all, getting paid so much, I need to do my job properly. I have professional ethics."
As I said this to Nancy, I couldn't help but straighten my back.
Nancy snorted coldly, seeming to look down on my explanation.
But Andrew, hearing my words, seemed uncomfortable. The look he gave me carried a murderous intent.
We were about to divorce anyway, the contract marriage was almost over; I didn't care about his glares.
Since he had already declared his loyalty to Nancy, he might as well have divorced me sooner. That way, I wouldn't have had to watch the two of them flaunt their affection every day. The two of them should have gotten together earlier and spared me from all that torment.
I'm not stupid. I didn't want to stand there and let Nancy humiliate me anymore, so I picked up the watering can, ready to water flowers elsewhere in the courtyard.
But just as I turned around, Nancy's voice came from behind me.
"Go make me a cup of coffee."
Nancy was ordering me around. Her tone was very commanding, as if she were the lady of the Lopez Mansion.
This wasn't just humiliating me anymore—she was using this method to show off her status in the Lopez family.
Although Andrew and I had a contract marriage, we weren't divorced yet. Nancy ordering me around like this was clearly humiliating Andrew.
The other maids at the Lopez Mansion, hearing Nancy's command, couldn't help but gasp.
These maids who took care of Clara knew my real identity, but before they started working at the Lopez Mansion, they had signed confidentiality agreements. Given Andrew's work as a celebrity, no one was allowed to reveal his married status in front of outsiders.
Katya quickly came to Nancy's side.
She bowed to Nancy first, then said, "Ms. Gonzalez, shall I make you coffee?"
Before Katya could finish, Nancy grabbed Andrew's arm and started acting cute in an affected voice.
She said, "Andrew, I just want to drink the coffee she makes. She says she's here to take care of Mrs. Lopez, but if she can't even make coffee, how can she take good care of Mrs. Lopez?"
"I'm not trying to make things difficult for her on purpose. I just want to check for Mrs. Lopez whether she actually knows how to take care of people." She turned to Andrew.
Nancy's affected words made my scalp tingle. I thought Andrew would at least dismiss Nancy's idea to preserve some of my dignity in front of the other maids.
But I was wrong.
Andrew looked at Nancy gently and nodded.
Then he turned to me and said, "Go make Ms. Gonzalez a cup of coffee. Remember, add extra sugar—she doesn't like bitter things!"
Fuck!
Raging anger instantly exploded in my chest.
At that moment, I wanted nothing more than to grab the watering can and pour it all over Andrew's damn face.
I held my breath. I needed to stay calm. He was my meal ticket, and I reminded myself.
"He's about to divorce you soon. When you divorce, he'll definitely give you a big settlement. For the sake of money, swallow this humiliation for now."
"After the divorce, once you get the money, buy some darts and throw them hard at his photo."
In the end, I suppressed my anger. I forced out a smile and nodded at Andrew.
"Okay, I'll make it right now!"
With that, I picked up the watering can and headed to the Lopez Mansion's lounge.
As I walked past Andrew and Nancy with my back straight, I could clearly sense Nancy's unfriendly gaze on me.
But I wasn't afraid.
Nancy's voice came from not far behind me.
She was still speaking to Andrew in that affected way. "Andrew, you're so wonderful. I never imagined that after four years, you'd still remember what I like. You're the only one who treats me best. I'm so touched."
Nancy's words disgusted me so much I got goosebumps. I hurried to the lounge, trying to leave those two behind.
The Lopez Mansion had a fresh coffee grinder. Andrew used to love drinking coffee and would often have the maids grind it fresh for him.
After I married him, knowing he had stomach problems, I helped him break his morning coffee habit.
I wiped down the coffee machine and started grinding coffee beans for Nancy. Just as I was operating the coffee machine, Andrew squeezed into the lounge.
With a cold expression, he pushed me into the corner of the lounge, pressed his body against my chest, and lifted my chin with his hand.
He questioned me irritably. "Why are you so weak?"
