Introduction
How could the Mendez be allowed to get away with what they’ve done, and what she would not have given for a second chance to destroy these monsters who took everything from her.
“Please one more chance, please………” she whispered weakly till life faded from her brown colored eyes, forever closed in death. But if revenge will destroy everything in its path, including you, will you take the chance?
This was the choice Sonia had to make, when she was mercifully given a second chance at life after dying from a car crash, she was in with her parents, and younger brother Dev whose head was bashed in by the windscreen of the Voltron vehicle they were in.
Chapter 1
New York smelled different from Crestwood.
There in Crestwood, the air had the smell of cut grass, old textbooks, and the faint mildew of a school that hadn’t been renovated since the nineties. Here, it was steel and exhaust, roasted coffee and ambition. Even twenty‑six floors up, the city’s pulse vibrated through the glass.
Sonia Verma stood in front of the floor‑to‑ceiling windows of her new penthouse, fingers resting on the cool pane. The late afternoon sun smeared gold across the skyline, skyscrapers like spikes skewering the sky.
She could almost see Crestwood from up here—or the version of it that still existed in her mind: the cramped apartment two bus rides away from school, the peeling paint, the one bookshelf crammed with discount textbooks and secondhand dreams.
“All this,” Lara said behind her, “and you still haven’t bought a couch that isn’t from the ‘minimalist torture device’ section.”
Sonia smiled faintly and turned away from the window.
The loft was large, almost aggressively so—exposed brick, warm wood floors, an open kitchen with marble counters that gleamed under recessed lighting. Her furniture, by contrast, was sparse: a sturdy dining table, a pair of armchairs, a bed in the adjoining room. The rest of the space was claimed by whiteboards, corkboards, and a sleek workstation bristling with screens.
“It’s not torture,” Sonia said. “It’s ergonomic.”
“Ergo—my ass.” Lara kicked lightly at the leg of one of the armchairs. “Your back is going to stage a rebellion one day. And when it does, I will represent it in court pro bono.”
“You hate pro bono.” Sonia said with a soft laughter as she went to sit on the couch.
“I hate your seating choices more.”
Sonia shook her head, but the banter soothed something restless in her chest.
Lara crossed the room, the heels of her ankle boots tapping softly against the floor. She was still Lara—sharp dark eyes, thick hair twisted into a knot that would probably unravel by the end of the night, an aura of caffeinated competence. But the Crestwood girl with thick glasses and highlighters in every pocket had become Lara Seo, associate at a mid‑size Manhattan firm, sharp suits and sharper cross‑examinations.
“So,” Lara said, leaning a hip against the dining table. “You move back to the city, you actually buy a place that doesn’t look like a shoebox, you start leaving your laptop for more than ten minutes at a time… and yet, you still haven’t told me why.”
“I told you why,” Sonia said. “The American market is important for Veritas.”
“Mm‑hmm.” Lara folded her arms. “You moved headquarters back to New York now, of all times, for purely strategic, no‑emotion, business reasons.”
“Yes.”
“And it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Mendez Group just put out an RFP for a data‑integration overhaul that you, coincidentally, happen to be perfectly positioned to win.”
Sonia’s jaw tightened.
Lara’s gaze softened. “Sonia.”
Sonia looked past her, at the main wall.
There, a large corkboard dominated the space, covered with printouts, photos, strings of red thread. It looked like something from a detective show, except the faces weren’t criminals in mug shots—they were people in expensive suits, professionally photographed for glossy magazines and company websites.
At the center sat a photo torn from a business article: RICKY MENDEZ – THE PRINCE OF REINVENTION. He stood at a podium, dark hair slightly wind‑tousled, hand lifted mid‑gesture. The Mendez Group logo glowed behind him in blue and silver.
To the right of Ricky’s photo: HELENA MENDEZ, his mother. Below her: PRINCIPAL EDUARDO VARGAS, now smiling in a political campaign shot. And next to him, with her influencer’s practiced pout and millions of followers: TESSA CLARKE.
Sonia walked over to the board. Her fingers hovered—not touching, never touching—but tracing lines only she could see.
“The RFP is an opportunity,” she said. “Mendez Group is global. Their data is a mess. Veritas can fix it.”
“And?”
“And… they’re connected to him.” Sonia’s voice flattened. “To all of them.”
Lara sighed, pushing off the table to join her. “You could have kept building Veritas in London. In Singapore. Anywhere. You were doing fine without ever setting foot in this time zone again.” You are lucky, you have your father wrapped around your pretty finger, and consenting to your every whim, I which my father was like that.
Fine wasn’t the word for it. Veritas Analytics had gone from a tiny two‑person consultancy to a rising data‑intelligence firm in six years.
They specialized in making sense of chaos: disparate systems, scattered records, half‑hidden patterns. Companies gave them access to the veins and arteries of their operations; Veritas told them where the clots were.
Sonia had built it under an alias at first, because anonymity was safer.
Because the girl from Crestwood had died leaving behind the woman she had become. She just fairly recently, had changed it to Sonia Verma, as an unspoken promise to what she planned on doing.
Coming back had felt like stepping into sunlight after years underground. Blinding. Exposing. Necessary.
“It’s time,” she said. “I’ve spent ten years cleaning up other people’s messes. I want to clean up my own.”
Lara’s eyes moved over the board, then back to Sonia’s face. “Revenge isn’t cleaning.”
“Isn’t it?” Sonia’s gaze drifted back to Ricky’s picture. “What would you call it?”
Lara hesitated. “Justice. Maybe. Closure.”
“Closure is a word therapists use so you keep going to therapy.” Sonia’s lips twisted. “It’s not real. But truth is. Consequences are.”
“And you think getting hired by the Mendez Group is going to give you that?”
“It gives me proximity,” Sonia said. “Access. Leverage. They’ll let me into their systems. Their archives. Their secrets. And I will finally see… everything.”
Everything they’d done. Everything they’d hidden. Every lie that had spread like ink through her life.
Lara leaned her head back, staring at the ceiling. “You know I love when you get scary. It’s very femme fatale of you. But I’m just going to say it: walking into the Mendez building is like volunteering to test out a new brand of landmine.”
Sonia looked at her. “Are you telling me not to do it?”
Lara’s mouth opened, then closed. She exhaled. “I’m telling you to be sure of what you’re doing
“I most certainly am” Sonia said as she smiled wickedly with her eyes fixed out the window.
“They won’t see me coming, and by the time they do, I will be done crashing down those high walls of theirs, and grinding it down to the dust. This is a promise”. Sonia said with her eyes still fixed out the window and her voice as soft as a whisper.
Lara could not help but do a double take, at the seriously wicked expression on Sonia’s face. She quickly whispered a quick rest in peace prayers for the Mendez because their grim reaper is here.
What could have happened, you might be guessing, wondering even right now as you are reading, well, let’s take a trip down memory lane...

My stomach twisted, but he wasn’t finished.
"You're just a pathetic little human," Zayn said, his words deliberate, each one hitting like a slap. "Spreading your legs for the first guy who bothers to notice you."
Heat rushed to my face, burning with humiliation. My chest ached — not from his words alone, but from the sick realization that I had trusted him. That I had let myself believe he was different.
I was so, so stupid.
