Chapter 2

After I dropped Mia off, I went to see a lawyer.

I took out the divorce agreement Logan had drawn up years ago.

When Logan married me, he'd made it very clear: he could ask for a divorce at any time, and I had no right to refuse.

The agreement had no date on it. Only his signature.

Once I'd confirmed it was legally valid in New York State, I signed my name and asked the lawyer to handle it. "When it's all finalized, send the papers straight to the house."

I'd tried to love him. But his coldness had killed every feeling I had a long time ago.

When I got back to the house, I sent my résumé to a few companies overseas, then printed out my resignation letter and took it to the office.

After we married, Logan had moved me out of the CEO's office.

I'd just packed up my personal things and was about to leave when a few executives came over, gathered around Logan and Serena.

Serena had changed into a sharp, professional suit.

Logan's arm was half around her waist, and his eyes never left her for a second.

"Amelia, this is Ms. Serena, Mr. Logan's girlfriend. She's our new marketing director." The HR manager handed me some papers. "She'll be taking over your position. You're being moved to facilities. Finish your handover today."

Logan's girlfriend? Logan didn't even bother to look up.

I dug my nails into my palms, looked at Logan, and opened my mouth. "Lo—"

"Ms. Amelia." Logan cut me off coldly, his eyes full of warning. "If you're unhappy with the transfer, take it up with HR."

His brow was tight. He was terrified I'd expose our marriage in front of everyone.

"She's better suited for that position than you are," Logan added.

I knew perfectly well he wasn't just talking about the job.

I forced myself to stay calm and nodded. "Fine."

Logan was satisfied. His eyes went back to Serena, full of tenderness.

That night, the company threw a welcome party for Serena.

I'd already resigned and didn't want to go, but Serena stopped me.

"Amelia, you're not skipping the party just because I took your job, are you?" Serena held a glass of champagne, smiling innocently. "I really didn't mean to take it. Logan arranged all of it. Come with me. I don't know anyone here."

I looked at her fake all-American smile and shook my head. "No, thanks. I have to go pick up my daughter."

"What about your husband? Have him pick her up!"

"I don't have a husband."

Logan had never acknowledged me in public.

Just then, Mia suddenly ran up and threw her arms around my legs. "Mommy! Logan picked me up from school today!"

I froze.

Logan didn't even know where Mia's school was. How could he have picked her up?

I looked up. Logan was walking over from across the room, smiling at Serena. He didn't spare us so much as a glance.

"Logan, you know her daughter?" Serena asked.

"I ran into her by accident when I was picking up Leo, so I brought her along." Logan's voice was distant, as if he were explaining a total stranger. "Her mother works in administration."

Mia was about to call out to him. I quickly gave her a tiny shake of my head.

Mia dropped her eyes, hurt.

"Oh, I see." Serena nodded, understanding. "This little girl doesn't have a daddy. Don't move her mom to facilities, then. It's so hard being a single mom."

Logan glanced at me. "Fine. Your call."

Serena happily took his arm, the two of them acting like no one else was in the room.

"Mommy, Daddy!" Leo's little voice interrupted them. He ran over and wrapped his arms around Logan's leg. "Pick me up!"
