Lycan or werewolf?
"Damien get up, you'll be late again," his mom's voice echoed through the thin walls of his room.
Damien opened his eyes slowly, he groaned from pain but didn't know where it was coming from.
" Five more minutes," he muttered pulling his blanket over his head.
"Not happening, you are already pushing it with your coach, don't make me call you out off the team," she opened his room door.
" You wouldn't do that,"he jumped up.
" Try me ,"his mom replied.
Damien brushed his hair with his hands, the memory of last night was clinging to him except he remembered leaving for a run in the woods, the smell of the leaves and the crunch of the gravel then nothing, everything went blank.
"I'm up, don't call me off the team," he said looking at his mom.
" I won't,"she smiled walking away.
By the time he arrived at school, Damien was trying to recollect what happened last night, it felt unreal like he had a nightmare but the ache in his legs said otherwise.
Jack was already waiting for him by his locker.
"You look like you didn't sleep, what happened?" He looked at Damien.
" I went for a run last night in the woods,"Damien leaned closer
" And?"Jack cuts in.
"I don't remember what happened after that, except for the glowing red eyes staring at me and then I woke up in my bed," Damien said looking confused.
" Dude,that's a wolf ,"Jack's jaw dropped.
" Wolves, don't have glowing eyes...," Damien scoffed .
" A lycan does?"Jack cuts in.
"There's no such thing as lycan, they are all fantasies," Damien said.
" Then explain what you saw last night,"Jack looked at him.
" I don't know maybe a coyote,their eyes reflect light at night,"Damien said.
" You're sure?"Jack asked.
"It has to be,they are no wolves in town," Damien added.
" It sounds different from how you explained it,"Jack said.
" I don't know jack, it was really scary and you know what's worse?"Damien said.
" What?"Jacks cuts in.
"I felt it was human and not a monster," Damien started at him.
" Ohh....that's so scary,"Jack mocked him.
" Really, I'm not joking. I taught I was having a nightmare." I whispered.
" My conclusion is you're having a concussion, let's go to the nurse office," Jack carries his bag.
" I'm not Joking,"Damien muttered.
Damien noticed two girls across the hall whispering near the water fountain,he wasn't even looking at them but he heard their voices as if they were right beside him.
"Do you think they'll let her out on bail?" One of the girls said.
" No way, they wouldn't arrest her if it wasn't serious," the other replied.
Damien looked in their direction.
"What?" Jack followed his gaze.
"I could swear I just heard them," Damien said looking at the girls.
" Now you have super human powers, I told you let's go to the nurse office",Jack said.
" Nothing's wrong with me",Damien said.
" You're acting weird and I'm weird one,"Jack narrowed his eyes.
" Yeah, welcome to my life lately,"Damien muttered.
By afternoon, Damien noticed he had a headache, the only thing keeping him in school was hockey practice, ice was where he belonged, where things made sense or at least where he used to.
"Carter, get up," Coach D shouted as Damien skated into position.
"Don't embarrass me," Jack leaned over the board smirking.
Damien rolled his eyes and held the stick low in his hands, the whistle blew and he launched forward. In a flash everything stopped, the world slowed around him,the slap of skates, the swings of sticks, the sound of puck cutting across the ice, every move was predictable.
Damien slid between two defenders with ease,he knew where and how each of them would play. The puck flew past the goalies glove and slammed into the net.
All eyes turned on him.
"Did you see that,no way," one of his team members said in disbelief.
"Are you sure that's Carter," another one said.
"Okay, who are you and what the hell did you do with my best friend",Jack hung his mouth open.
Damien laughed not because he won but as a result of disbelief, his limbs felt lighter, every shot of his was perfect, the kind of perfection that made jaws drop and coaches scribble notes on their clipboards.
"Keep that up Carter and you'll have colleges knocking on your door",Coach D brushed his hair.
Damien went to meet Jack who was already at his locker.
"Alright spill, how add you suddenly Wayne Gretzky out there?" Jack cornered him.
" I don't know,",Damien opened his locker and saw a note, he opened it.
"Meet me at the school field this evening".
He was shocked, jack leaned over his shoulder reading it.
“You’re not actually going, are you?” Jack asked, eyes narrowing.
“I have to, but you're coming with me,"Damien muttered.
" Why?" Jack asked.
"It might be connected to the missing bodies or the shadow in the woods",Damien said as they walked out.
They both went to the school field that evening.
Damien stood still when he noticed a shadow run in the woods, before either of them could react, the figure attacked. Jack was knocked to the ground and Damien rolled back, landing with his back.
The attacker moved fast, swinging a knife, Damien ducked, countering with a swift punch to the ribs. The figure grunted but didn't stop. He came back harder, punching him in the face. Damien blocked it with his forearm, he caught the leg mid air and slammed the figure to the ground but the hooded figure twisted, slipping out of his grip like smoke.
Jack recovered and tried to tackle him, but the figure flipped him over with a clean move.
Damien growled, something primal rising inside him. The attacker paused, sensing it just for a second.
Before Damien could attack him, the hooded figure threw down a smoke bomb and thick white fog erupted around them and the attacker was gone.
Jack stumbled up beside him.
“Dude… your eyes.” Jack shouted.
