Chapter 3 Chapter 3
“Doctor…” I called weakly, and he spun around, surprised.
“Are you okay?” He asked, checking my health status.
“Yes, I am. I heard everything.” I said calmly, and the doctor looked sad, and disappointed.
“It's fine. You can go ahead.” I gave him a nod of approval.
“You know you don't have to do this, right?” He whispered to me. “We can take legal actions if you want, ma'am.” He advised, but I shook my head in refusal.
“The repercussions will be too bad. You won't be able to handle it.” I stated, and he sighed because he knew it was nothing but the truth.
“Don't worry about me, I'll be fine.” I assured him, and even though he was still reluctant, he knew he had no choice anymore.
He sighed again, “Well, If that's what you want, I'll do it then.”
“Thank you.” I smiled slightly. “But before we proceed, can you help please bring my phone to me? It's over there.” I pointed at my phone, which was carefully placed on a table right beside the wall.
He walked over, grabbed it, and handed it over to me quickly. I typed in my password and my phone was immediately unlocked. Seeing no call or message, I sighed in relief.
I scrolled through my contact list, and stopped at a particular name.
“I'll text you soon. Plans changed.” I sent a message to the person, and immediately activated the ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature on my phone.
I put the phone in the bedside drawer, and laid back down.
I took a deep breath, and said to the Doctor, “We can proceed.”
He nodded, and walked out of the room, only to return shortly after with nurses, who brought blood bags, infusion sets and monitoring equipment along with them.
After setting up, he said, “It might sting a little, but let me know if you feel uncomfortable in any way.”
I responded with a slight nod.
As soon as the needle got into my arm, and the process began, I felt a bit of pain but I didn't react, because I just wanted it over and done with. So I endured.
Everything was going as planned until all of a sudden, my vision began to blur, and my body felt weightless, as if sinking into the bed. The monitoring machine’s initial steady beep turned frantic, its beeps growing more insistent.
“Doctor! She’s losing consciousness!” One of the nurses cried out, her voice, piercing through the room.
“Ma'am… Ma'am…” They all tried to call me back to consciousness.
I struggled to focus on their faces, as everything seemed to be receding.
“Ma'am, can you hear me? Can you see me?” The words echoed, fading into the distance, as I drifted off.
THREE DAYS LATER
My eyes slowly fluttered open, staring at the white ceiling above me. The familiar antiseptic scent of hospital drugs enveloped me, hinting to me that I was still at the hospital.
I took a slow deep breath, and was glad that my airway was finally free. My eyes scanned the room and there, seated on the chair with his legs crossed, was Tyler, totally focused on something interesting on his phone.
I said nothing and just kept staring at him. Honestly, at that moment, I wished I could just choke him as punishment for everything he had put me through all the years I've been married to him and even in the last couple of days.
I shook my head, shaking the thought out of my mind, and he noticed that I was awake.
“You're finally awake?”
I hesitated for a split second, wondering why he just asked me an obvious question.
“I guess.” I answered, blankly.
“How do you feel?” He asked further, his tone indifferent.
“How do I feel? What is it to you? Do you even care?” I thought to myself, still staring at him. It wasn't like anything about me mattered to him anyway.
He raised an eyebrow, waiting for my response and I nodded.
“I think I just need to—”
The words hung in my throat because I wasn't done talking when his phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, his lips curved into a beautiful smile. I knew it was none else, but Hannah.
“I have to step out to take this call. I'll be right back.” He said, getting up in a hurry. “Do you need anything?”
He didn't even wait for a response from me before walking out. The Doctor walked in shortly after, and was surprised that I was awake already.
“Oh wow. Mr Richardson didn't tell me you were awake. He only said he needed to take a call.” The doctor said as he approached me, and I smiled slightly.
“How do you feel?” He asked, helping me sit up.
“I feel better. Thank you, Doc.” I answered with a smile.
“That's good to hear.” He smiled, relieved as he tucked a soft pillow behind my back.
“Ummm… What about Hannah?” I asked, my voice filled with uncertainty.
“Oh… Miss Hannah also got better. In fact, she was discharged two days ago. Thankfully, we got enough blood from you before things almost got out of hand.” He informed me, and my expression remained blank.
“Oh… That's good for her.” I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper.
He slipped his hands in his medical coat’s pockets. “I'm just glad we were able to attend to you immediately, if not, it would have been a different story entirely right now.”
“Are you sure you're feeling better though?” He asked again for confirmation.
“Yes, I am. And that's thanks to you and your team for your swift response. I'm so thankful.” I responded gratefully.
He smiled, proudly. “We’re only doing our job. Thankfully, you've had enough time to rest and recuperate. I mean, you've been out for three full days.” He revealed, and I couldn't believe my ears.
“Wait, what!” I exclaimed shockingly. Even the doctor was taken aback at the way I screamed.
“Three days? No way…” I couldn't believe it. “Please get me my phone.” I said in a hurry.
Still confused, he quickly took my phone out of the drawer where I had earlier put it, and handed it over to me.
“Is everything alright, ma'am?” He asked, concerned.
“Yeah.” I nodded, my eyes focused on my phone.
I swiftly typed in my password, and the moment it unlocked, I was dumbfounded. What I saw threw me into complete shock.
“Oh no…”
