Rowan looked toward the highway.

Mr. Bell followed his gaze.

“Stay alert.”

As if summoned by those words, the old motel sign buzzed above them.

Once.

Twice.

Then every lit letter went dark.

A groan moved through the crowd.

June swore.

Then the diner lights flickered on.
