Fireheart. · Completed · 80.1k Words
Introduction
Cara cried as she shook her head and pulled away from Nick.
He gently drew her back to his arms.
“I can't stay away from you. I've tried so hard to.”
“I know you're trying hard enough too but I can see how much it's hurting you.”
She turned to him with tears in her eyes. Her body trembling slightly.
“This is going to ruin us.”
"Let it."
He was her fiancé's brother.
She had never looked at him that way before, never even batted an eyelid at him. Until that night, that sinful night where they had both exploded in passion.
If word ever got out about the things they did, her family's reputation would be in shambles.
It would be the biggest scandal in New York High Society.
Cara Devine was engaged to marry Alexander Greene. Although their marriage had been arranged from the start, Cara had come to like Alexander, till his brother Nicholas Greene came along and slowly every inch of normalcy and stability was ripped from her life.
What Cara and Nicholas had was forbidden and it could very well ruin them, if they let it.
Chapter 1
The words kept playing in her head in a constant loop as she sat at the bar. Cara Devine wasn't the kind of woman that went to bars often, nor was she the type to drink so much. But after enduring a screaming match from her fiance Alexander, she knew that she deserved some time alone. Not to mention the fact that she had a long shitty day at work. Every thing in her life seemed to be crumbling, yet she was expected to hold it all in and smile, like it didn't matter at all.
"Another drink please."
She ordered as she raised her hand slightly and adjusted herself on the barstool. Cara Devine liked to think of herself as an average woman. She had a good job and she was obedient to her parents, she liked doing what most ordinary people did and she was good and kind. Her life was perfect and up until a few hours ago, she had thought that she was going to be getting married to the perfect man. That was the illusion that had been sold to her.
But they had a huge fight and judging by how angry both of them were, Cara was not expecting a reconciliation any time soon. In fact, she felt like the complete opposite was going to happen. She had already threw her engagement ring at him and she knew he had noticed the gesture.
She liked Alexander, even though it was an arranged marriage that had been orchestrated by both of their parents for the success of their business, Cara had still agreed to do it. Because Alexander was in all a perfect man and Cara always listened to her parents. They always told her that they knew better and she never doubted it, up until that moment after the huge fight.
They talked and dated for a while before he had popped the question, since it was all planned, Cara said yes. Ever since then, things had been going smoothly, she had slowly tailored her mind to believe that they were going to be in love and get married and she tried to love him for the sake of their marriage.
And everything had been going smoothly, because Cara and Alexander were very understanding and intelligent adults. They understood each other and it was what kept them going.
Till Alexander has asked if Cara had decided in giving up her position in the company when they got married and Cara had strongly opposed. She had worked hard for the position even if it was in her father's company. She had been accorded the equal respect with others and she worked very hard to deserve where she was.
Alexander telling her to quit her job was an insult to her and she didn't take it lightly. Not to mention the fact that they were both frustrated with each other and the wedding plans.
Alexander on the other hand felt like she was deliberately acting out so she could stall the wedding plans.
She knew she had a couple of flare ups once in a while, but it had all been because of stress. The fight that ensued was a buildup of emotions and it also happened to be their first real fight.
Cara had never seen Alex so angry over something as far as she was concerned, Alex had never lost his control with her. In fact, it was their first real arguement.
She looked around the bar once again and spotted a familiar face. She squinted to get a better look and found the figure approaching her. It was Nicholas, her fiance's brother.
He gave her a small wave as he noticed her and she smiled uneasily as she waved back.
She knew very little about him, mostly because he was always away at work and he kept away from all the family issues and all. She had only met him a few times, and all the times she met him, he was always withdrawn and cold. He rarely ever said more than a quick hello.
She quickly decided he probably didn't like her very much.
But he was very handsome though, Nicholas and Alexander might be brothers but they looked about as different as day and night. Nicholas was tall with a lean but muscular build. He had raven black hair and mesmerising blue eyes that stuck out like mini glaciers. His bone structure was amazing, a well defined jaw that could cut class and cheekbones that looked like they were carved by angels. Unlike his brother Alexander who didn't keep a beard or mustache and always had a clean shaven face, Nicholas was the complete opposite....
Cara gulped hard as she looked away but it was too late, he had noticed her and he was walking towards her table.
"Cara? What are you doing here?"
"I'd ask the same of you. Did your brother send you here?"
Cara asked as she stirred her drink, she was feeling slightly tipsy, but not nearly enough to be drunk.
Nicholas looked so confused that Cara believed that he knew nothing of her and his brother's stupid fight.
"No, I just came here to relax and unwind. Like you're doing. I had a pretty rough day."
"Hnmmmm, tell me about it..."
Cara murmured.
"Work related?"
She asked as he slipped into the barstool next to her as he signalled to the waiter.
Nicholas shrugged.
"I guess you can say that. What about you? Trouble in paradise?"
Cara shrugged as she raised up her hand where her engagement ring used to be.
"Let's just say you might not get to be my brother-in law after all."
She said with a light smile and Nicholas eyes widened.
"Woahhhhh! What the hell happened?"
"I don't want to talk about it. Another drink waiter!!!"
"What are you having? I think you should go easy with the drinks."
Nicholas warned but Cara shot him a glare.
"I"m a grown woman, I think I'm capable of holding my own alcohol down."
"Yes, but you don't want to home roaringly drunk do you?"
Nicholas asked as he signalled the waiter too. Cara glanced at him.
"That is my plan Nicholas. I want to drink so much that I forget my own name."
"How do you plan on getting home then?"
Cara shrugged.
"I booked a room at the hotel. I'm not going home."
"Hmm... Cool."
"Cheers!"
Cara said her she clinked her shot glass moments later with Nicholas and he raised his eyebrows.
"Oh well! Cheers to what?"
"A great night!"
The next few hours Cara and Nicholas were trying almost every drink the bartender had to offer. After trying so many drinks, shots and talking on pretty random things, they proceeded to the dance floor where they tried to dance the alcohol away from their systems.
Cara had fun not thinking about anything, her mind was a foggy haze and all she could think about was Nicholas close to her and the music pounding in her ears.
After dancing for what seemed to be like forever, the two of them managed to drag themselves out of the club and decided to go home. But Nicholas was as well too drunk to drive, so Cara invited him to spend the night in her hotel room. They both walked out of the club and dragged themselves into the elevator that took them straight to her floor.
"This is my key card."
Cara said as she fished it out from her purse while shaking her head rigorously to get rid of the dizziness.
She inserted the key card and the door clicked open.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?"
Nicholas asked as he rubbed at his eyes.
"I mean, I can just take a Uber home."
Cara laughed.
"Nonsense! It's fine! I'll feel bad if I let you go home looking like this. Besides, my room is big enough."
She said as they walked into the room.
"You can sleep on the couch though."
She added pointing to the sofa as she they walked into her hotel room.
"Promise me you won't tell Alexander this happened."
Nicholas drawled as he walked behind her.
Cara shrugged.
"I don't think I'm engaged to your brother anymore so it's all good!"
"Want a drink?"
Cara asked as she poured him a shot of whiskey that was on the counter while kicking off her heels, it was a wonder she had kept them on for so long, or arriving back with it in one piece.
She looked at Nicholas who was shrugging off his coat.
"No, don't you think we've had enough for one night?"
He asked and she shrugged.
"I don't mind."
She said as she gulped the drink and returned the glass.
"Come! Let's talk."
She said as she patted the side of her bed.
Nicholas came to sit next to her and she smiled at him.
"Why is it that I rarely see you around the family? I mean, it's funny that I'm finally getting to know you the day I call things off with your brother."
Nicholas shrugged.
"I work a lot. So I don't really have time for the family dinners and all."
"Hmmmm. Work? Or are you avoiding something? Or is it someone?"
"What do you mean?"
He asked as he raised his eyebrows.
"Remember the first time we met?"
Cara asked with a twinkle in her eyes and Nicholas looked confused.
"At the family dinner?"
"No, not that. The very first time we met?"
Nicholas frowned as he struggled to remember, but the memory came to him slowly. He remembered clearly, he had first met her at a party and he had said hello. He really liked her then, so he had approached her and told her that he thought she was her pretty. She had smiled bashfully and gave him a dance and then that was all.
"Hmmmm. It's been so long. I thought you forgot..."
Cara shook her head.
"I didn't. But then at the dinner when you looked surprised to see me I assumed you didn't remember..."
"I did. I just didn't want to bring it up because of my brother."
He shot her a knowing look and she nodded her head in understanding.
"Hnmmmm."
Cara reached for the bottle of whiskey again.
"Your brother can be a pain in the ass."
Nicholas shrugged.
"I know."
He replied with resignation as he bent his head.
She was about to bring the bottle of whisky to her lips when Nicholas grabbed it from her.
"No more for you."
He said as he yanked the bottle from her and she pouted.
"Come on!!! One last one."
She said as she pulled him close and he shook his head as he looked into her big hazel eyes.
"No more."
He whispered staring into her eyes with his breathing hard and fast. Cara looked at his lips and licked hers. He had such soft kissable lips, she had been staring at them all night and now that he was so close to her, she couldn't get rid of the scent of him. the overpowering masculine musk that she loved so much about men. It was always so intoxicating.
She leaned in closer until their breaths mingled. Her heart was racing fast as she closed the gap between them and kissed him.
He kissed her back too, with the same ferocity and the same passion.
They went from kissing each other ferociously to tearing each other's clothes off and they didn't hesitate one bit.
Cara tool off her clothes and helped Nicholas with his as they both landed in the sheets naked.

I Found the Babies

I shivered.
Alyssa Reynolds found herself in a situation, while returning home from work, and she had three choices:
Simply walk away and forget that you ever heard the sound of wailing infants.
