Introduction
Chapter 1
Adrian came home after midnight and found me reading in the entryway.
He took a laminated card from his coat pocket and set it on the console between us. Lily Shaw's name was printed beneath the logo of her youth chess club.
"Serena had a migraine," he said. "I picked Lily up. That's all."
I turned a page. "Okay."
He didn't move.
In the old days, that card would have started a fight. I would have asked why Serena couldn't call a rideshare, why her ex-husband never seemed responsible for his own daughter, why Adrian had missed dinner again. I would have searched Adrian's face for guilt and Serena's social media for clues. Every answer would have made me ask another question.
Tonight, I finished the paragraph I was reading.
"Evelyn." His voice sharpened. "Did you hear me?"
"Yes."
"Then why aren't you saying anything?"
I looked up. He was still handsome in the severe, polished way that had once made every room feel too small for my happiness. His tie was loose. Rain darkened the shoulders of his coat. A faint gardenia perfume clung to him—the scent Serena had worn since college.
"What would you like me to say?"
His jaw tightened. "You're not going to ask why I saw her?"
"You just told me."
"You're not going to make a scene?"
"No."
I closed my book and stood. He caught my wrist before I could pass him.
The pressure was sudden enough to hurt. He pulled me back against the cabinet, one hand braced beside my head.
"I met Serena," he said. "Why aren't you upset?"
For a moment, I almost laughed.
For years, he had told me my jealousy was ugly. That I was humiliating him. That Serena was my best friend and I was sick for suspecting them. I had begged him to come home, begged him to attend appointments, begged him not to put another woman and her child before his wife.
Now my silence offended him more than my anger ever had.
"Let go," I said.
"Answer me first."
"I don't care who you see."
Something shifted in his face. It was small, but I knew him too well to miss it.
Fear.
"That's a lie."
"Believe whatever makes you comfortable."
His grip tightened. "I'm your husband. You don't care at all?"
I studied the man I had loved for nineteen years and felt nothing rise to meet his anger. Not jealousy. Not panic. Not even the old urge to explain myself until he understood.
"I cared when it still mattered," I said. "You called me crazy for it."
I pulled my wrist free and walked toward the stairs.
Behind me, the pickup card slid off the console and struck the floor.
Adrian had spent years teaching me not to love him so loudly.
He had finally succeeded.

"What?"
Before I can react, he scoops her up. Her small body fits easily in the cradle of his talons. For a split second, she looks startled, but not afraid. Her hand rests against one scaled finger, and she stares up at him with that same curious wonder, as though she’s already forgotten she was ever meant to fear me.
"Put her down," I try to command, panic threading through my thoughts. "You’ll hurt her."
"She’s ours," the beast insists, possessive and fierce. "Our snowflake."

Taste of Fate: The Vampire King's Human Mate
He reached for the back of my head and pulled me up just enough to reach my neck. When his fangs slid into me, the pain was instant, electric. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. My hands found his shoulders, clawing for something to hold. My legs kicked. Tears streamed down my cheeks.
He moaned against my throat as he drank, and the sound was devastating.
