Introduction
Julian Cruz: star center and smug captain of the university’s hockey team.
When arena maintenance forces the figure skating team to share prime ice time with the hockey team, Elena’s comeback is thrown into chaos. Julian takes up her space, mocks her rigid routines, and pushes every single one of her buttons. But when Julian catches her secretly practicing in pain late at night. he makes a secret deal with her: he’ll teach her explosive hockey power-skating drills to rebuild her ankle’s power, if she helps him master the agile footwork he needs for the NHL draft.
Behind locked doors, late night friction turns into white hot attraction. But in a world driven by ruthless rivals, media scrutiny, and strict athletic rules, loving each other could cost them both their dreams. Elena must decide: is relying on someone else a fatal weakness, or the exact power she needs to take flight?
Chapter 1
The cold didn't just sit in the air of the arena; it sank straight through the leather of Elena's skates, biting into her right ankle.
She closed her eyes and drew in a breath of the freezing air, circling slowly along the edge of the rink. Her left blade cut a clean, easy line into the ice. Then she shifted her weight onto her right foot.
Pain throbbed beneath the skin — a dull, familiar reminder of the surgery that had nearly ended her career six months ago. Her mind screamed at her to stop, but she forced herself to keep gliding. The motion was smooth enough. Her timing, though, was off by a fraction of a second. A stranger in the stands wouldn't notice. A judge would.
"Focus, Elena," she whispered. "It's just ice. You've done this a thousand times."
Six months ago she had fallen mid-jump. She still remembered the sickening crack in her leg, the ambulance ride, the careful, pitying looks from her coaches afterward.
You're young, Elena. You could always coach kids instead.
She would rather quit skating entirely than settle for that.
She picked up speed, cold wind pulling loose strands from her bun. A glance at her watch: 6:15 a.m. Forty-five minutes of quiet ice before the rest of the team arrived. Forty-five minutes to prove her leg could still hold a jump.
She set her feet, bent her knees, and pushed off—
BANG.
A puck slammed into the glass beside her face.
Elena's ankle buckled as she aborted the jump, her skates sliding sideways in a spray of shaved ice. She caught the wall with both hands, pulse roaring in her ears.
"What is your problem?" she snapped, chest heaving.
Across the rink, the heavy doors swung open. A dozen men in padding and black jackets tramped onto the ice, sticks clattering. Leading them was a tall guy with dark hair curling out from under a baseball cap — the same face she'd been seeing on campus posters all year, wearing the same smug half-smile.
Julian. Captain of the university hockey team.
"Clear out, figure skaters," one of the players shouted, tossing his stick over the boards. "Main rink's flooded. We're taking this one."
Elena pushed off the wall, gliding toward center ice, eyes narrowed. "Get off my ice."
The others ignored her. Julian didn't. He stopped a few feet from the red line, stick spinning idly between his gloves, and looked her over — the dark blue practice outfit, the pale face, the rigid posture that gave away exactly how much she was hiding.
"Your ice?" he said. "Check the sign on the door. Rink A's closed. Rink B belongs to hockey now."
"My practice runs until seven," Elena said, voice gone cold. "The athletic director gave me this time to recover from an injury. Find somewhere else."
Julian laughed — low, unhurried — and stepped over the red line, closing the distance between them. Up close he smelled like cold air and mint gum.
"I'd love to," he said, leaning on his stick. His gaze flicked once to her wrapped ankle before returning to her face. "But we've got a game in three days. My team needs this time more than you do."
"And I have a career," she said, tilting her chin up to meet his eyes without backing away. "If I lose today's practice, my whole recovery schedule falls apart."
"Then practice somewhere else." His voice stayed light, almost bored. "Or skate around us. Just don't get hit — my guys aren't careful in the morning." He said it like a joke, and behind him two of his teammates laughed, dumping a bucket of pucks onto the ice with a crash that echoed off the rafters.
"I'm not sharing ice with a bunch of guys who can't skate in a straight line," Elena shot back, hands curling into fists inside her gloves.
Something sharpened in Julian's expression — competitive now, not amused. He leaned in, close enough that she had to hold her ground on instinct alone.
"Look," he said, dropping the joking tone. "I know about your comeback. Everyone read about the broken leg. This rink's huge. Take that corner, stay out of our way, and nobody gets hurt."
"Touch my side of the rink," Elena said, low and sharp, "and you'll see a war."
He studied her for a beat, then grinned — a real one this time, startled into it. "Wow. You really are as mean as people say."
He spun away, spraying ice over her boots, and shouted for his team to start drills.
Elena stood there, face hot, as the hockey players tore into the clean ice, blades cutting deep gouges she knew would take a resurface to fix. She wanted to storm off to the director's office. But she knew exactly how this worked — men's hockey brought in donor money; figure skating didn't. Make a scene, and she'd lose the little ice time she had left.
She swallowed her anger and skated to the far corner, trying to block out the crash of sticks and bodies. She closed her eyes, took a breath.
Just a simple jump. Keep it basic.
She built speed along the narrow strip of open ice, planted, and pushed off her right leg.
Pain lanced up her calf. Her knee buckled mid-air; she barely caught herself before hitting the ice, skate dragging with a screech that cut through the noise.
A whistle cracked across the rink.
"Elena!"
She looked up. Julian stood at center ice, puck balanced on his stick, his whole team watching her now.
"If you're gonna fall, do it quietly," he called, voice carrying easily. "You're killing my team's focus."
Heat flooded her face. She said nothing — there was nothing to say that wouldn't come out as a sob — and skated for the exit without looking back.
By eleven that night, the arena sat in total darkness except for the dim glow of the exit signs.
A lock clicked open near the back door. Elena slipped inside, jacket pulled tight, skates slung over one shoulder. Her ankle throbbed steadily beneath its wrap — the ache of a long day, not yet the ache of real damage.
She couldn't afford to lose a single practice. Four months until national tryouts. If she couldn't land a jump by next month, the officials wouldn't even let her compete.
She laced her skates in the dark, pulling the knots tight enough to numb her fingers.
"Twenty minutes," she whispered to the empty room. "Basics. Then home."
The ice was silent under her blades, the building enormous without the noise of coaches or music. She started with easy turns, warming muscles gone stiff from the cold, and let herself feel — for the first time all day — like a skater instead of a cautionary tale.
Her ankle held. Relief loosened something in her chest.
She picked up speed toward the far end, set her feet, and launched — one rotation, two—
In the dark, she misjudged the landing by an inch. Her right blade struck at a bad angle, and her ankle gave out with a dull, wet pop that she felt more than heard.
She hit the ice hard, sliding until she slammed into the boards near the player's bench.
For a moment she didn't move at all. Then the pain arrived in full, white and total, and a single, ragged sound tore out of her before she could stop it. She curled around her leg on the frozen floor, not crying so much as simply broken open — too raw even for tears, waiting for the burn to become something she could survive.
Not again. Please, not again.
A light clicked on near the bench.
Footsteps — heavy on wood, then soft on rubber matting. Elena went still, holding her breath, one arm dragging across her face though there was nothing left to wipe away.
A tall shape stepped out of the shadows, flashlight in one hand, a bag of ice in the other. The beam swept across the ice and landed on her.
Julian stood in the doorway in a gray hoodie and sweatpants, the smugness gone from his face entirely, replaced by something careful and serious.
"You know," he said quietly, "the doors are locked at night for a reason."
Elena tried to push herself up. Her leg gave out instantly, and she bit back a gasp, glaring up into the light.
"Get that out of my face," she managed. "And go away."
He didn't. He set the ice on the bench, pushed through the gate, and walked straight out onto the ice in his sneakers, heading toward her.
