Introduction
Chapter 1
Wren Ellison had been in Hollow Creek for exactly six days when she learned that some silences are louder than any confession.
She learned it standing outside the athletics office, holding a hall pass she didn't need and a notebook she'd already filled with half a town's worth of nervous glances. Her journalism teacher, Ms. Ferris, had promised her a "human interest beat." What Wren had gotten instead was a clipboard, a stopwatch, and an assignment to the boys' cross country team as student statistician.
"You'll shadow practices, log times, help with recovery drills for anyone coming back from injury," Ms. Ferris had said, like this was a gift and not a punishment. "And Wren? Try not to write anything before you understand it. This town doesn't forgive people who get the story wrong."
Wren hadn't asked what story. She hadn't needed to. In six days she'd already heard the name twice, once from a cashier who caught herself mid-sentence and once from a neighbor who changed the subject so fast it left a bruise. Nora Calloway. Missing three years. A girl who had walked into the quarry on a warm night in June and never walked back out.
The track behind Hollow Creek High smelled like cut grass and rubber, and the boys running it moved like they had somewhere better to be. Wren counted twelve of them looping the far curve before she found the one Coach Bellamy pointed to.
"That's Dez," the coach said. "Calloway. He's coming back from a stress fracture, so I need his splits logged exact, not estimated. He won't ask for help, so you'll have to offer it first."
Something crossed the coach's face when he said the name Calloway, quick as a shadow under a door. Wren had spent enough time watching people to know a flinch when she saw one. She filed it away the way she filed everything now, in the back pocket of her mind labeled later.
Dez Calloway ran like the ground owed him something. Even easing back from an injury, he moved with a rhythm that made the other runners look like they were trying too hard. When he finally slowed at the fence, sweat darkening his collar, he looked at Wren's clipboard the way most people looked at a wasp.
"You're the new statistician," he said. It wasn't a question.
"Wren Ellison." She held out a hand he didn't take. "I'm supposed to log your splits and help with your recovery stretches."
"I don't need help."
"Coach says you do."
"Coach worries." Dez pulled his water bottle from the fence post and didn't look at her again. "I've been running this track since I was twelve. I know my own body better than a clipboard does."
Wren could have let it go. Most people would have. Instead she crouched down, opened her notebook, and wrote his last two splits in neat, deliberate handwriting so he'd see she wasn't guessing.
"Four eleven, then four eighteen," she said. "You slowed down on the second loop. That's not stubbornness, that's a fracture that isn't fully healed yet."
For the first time, he actually looked at her. Not through her, the way he had a moment ago, but at her, like he was recalculating something.
"You've been here less than a week," he said.
"Six days."
"And you already think you know something about me."
"I think I know something about splits," Wren said. "The rest of you, I haven't figured out yet."
Something that wasn't quite a smile moved across his mouth and disappeared just as fast. He picked up his bag and walked off toward the locker rooms without another word, and Wren let him go, because pushing a story before it was ready to be told was the fastest way to lose it entirely.
Before any of that, though, there was the newspaper office, and Priya Nandakumar leaning against the doorway with two coffees and an expression that meant trouble.
"You've been holding out on me," Priya said, handing over one of the cups. She was Wren's only real friend so far in Hollow Creek, editor of the school paper's arts section and, according to her, the only person under forty in this town who still believed in asking rude questions out loud. "Six days here and you already scored the cross country beat. Bellamy hates giving reporters access to his runners."
"I'm not a reporter. I'm a statistician with a notebook habit."
"Sure." Priya grinned over her cup. "So how's the famous Dez Calloway? Every girl in this school has a theory about him and none of them have ever gotten him to say more than ten words."
"He said about thirty to me today."
Priya nearly choked. "Thirty words. From Dez Calloway. Wren, that's basically a marriage proposal by this school's standards."
"It was about splits."
"Uh huh." Priya's smile faded a shade, turning careful. "Just be gentle with that one, okay? His family's had it rough. You weren't here for it, but the whole thing with his sister wrecked this town in ways people still don't talk about at parties."
"What happened to her exactly?" Wren asked, keeping her voice as light as she could manage.
"Nora Calloway. Went missing at the quarry three summers ago, right before her senior year." Priya lowered her voice out of old habit, even though the office was empty. "Cops, search parties, the news vans, all of it. Then it just stopped. My mom always said this town decided it was easier to grieve her than to keep looking."
"That's a strange thing for a whole town to decide together."
"Hollow Creek's small enough that everybody decides things together." Priya shrugged, already moving on. "Anyway, homecoming piece by Friday. Try not to fall in love with a case file before then."
Wren promised she wouldn't, and mostly believed herself when she said it.
That night, she sat cross-legged on her bed with her laptop balanced on a pillow and typed Nora Calloway, Hollow Creek into a search bar for the first time. The results were thin. A missing person's flyer scanned crooked into a local news archive. A three-paragraph article from three summers ago that used the word "presumed" more than any article should. A single photo of a girl with Dez's same steady eyes, smiling at a camera like she had no idea what was coming.
Wren read the short article twice. The last confirmed sighting placed Nora at the old quarry on the edge of town, walking alone just after ten at night. No one had seen her since. The case had gone quiet within months, the article said, due to "a lack of new evidence," which was newspaper language for a town deciding to stop looking.
She thought about Coach Bellamy's flinch. She thought about the way three different adults had gone quiet around her in less than a week whenever the name came up, like the whole town had agreed on a story and was daring anyone to ask about the parts that didn't fit.
She thought about Dez, and the exact way he'd said I know my own body better than a clipboard does, like trust was something he'd already spent all of on someone who hadn't earned it back.
Wren closed her laptop and opened a fresh document instead. At the top, she typed a headline she wasn't ready to show anyone yet.
What Really Happened at Hollow Creek Quarry.
She stared at it for a long time before she realized her hands were shaking, and not from the cold.
Somewhere in this town, someone had decided that Nora Calloway's story was finished. Wren had six days of practice left before the next issue deadline, a coach who flinched at a dead girl's name, and a guarded boy who ran like he was trying to outdistance his own grief.
She had no idea yet that the story she was chasing would end up chasing her back.

I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.
My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.
But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.
In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.
"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.
"Who the fuck is Jason?"
My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.
I ran away for my life!
But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!
They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.
Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”
There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.
