Introduction

I was nobody. A broke, forgotten man with nothing but a name no one respected and a list of people who wanted me dead.
Then a phone call changed everything. A grandfather I never knew left me his entire empire. Forty-seven billion dollars. A tech conglomerate, three private jets, a penthouse in Manhattan, and enemies I never knew existed.
But here is the thing nobody told me: the old man was murdered. And whoever killed him thinks I am next.
My name is Ethan Cole. Six months ago, I was sleeping in my car. Today, I run Cole Global Industries. And every single person who ever stepped on me, betrayed me, or left me for dead is about to find out just how dangerous a desperate man becomes when he has forty-seven billion dollars and nothing left to lose.
The money was never the point. The truth was. And I am going to burn down every lie they built until I find it.

Chapter 1

I had been sleeping in my car for eleven days when the lawyer found me.

Not a great car. A 2009 Honda Civic with a broken heater and a passenger window that would not seal all the way, so on cold nights the wind came in like a ghost trying to get comfortable. It was parked outside a twenty-four-hour diner in Detroit called Mel's, which I liked because the staff never bothered me and the parking lot had a working streetlamp that kept the dark from feeling too heavy.

I was thirty-one days away from my twenty-ninth birthday. I had forty-two dollars and some change in my wallet, a duffel bag in the backseat with three days of clothes, and a phone that was two weeks from getting shut off because I had not paid the bill. I had just lost my job at the warehouse on Fletcher Street when the company folded overnight. No notice, no severance, just a padlock on the door and a note that said thank you for your service. Before that I had worked construction, before that a mechanic shop, before that a restaurant that burned down. My life had a pattern and the pattern was loss.

I was not feeling sorry for myself. I had moved past self-pity somewhere around day four. What I was feeling was tired in a way that sleep could not fix. The kind of tired that settles into your chest and makes everything feel like it is happening just slightly too far away for you to reach.

I was eating a dollar coffee and staring at nothing when a man knocked on my driver's side window.

He was maybe sixty, wearing a coat that cost more than my car was worth, and holding an umbrella even though it was not raining. He had the look of a person who prepared for every possible disaster except for the one where he had to stand in a parking lot talking to someone like me.

"Ethan Cole?" he said through the glass.

I rolled the window down two inches. "Depends who's asking."

"My name is Gerald Fitch." He held up a business card. Even from a distance I could see the paper was thick and cream-colored, the kind that costs money to print. "I am an attorney with Fitch and Associates in Manhattan. I have been looking for you for three weeks."

I stared at him. "Why?"

He cleared his throat. "Your grandfather, Victor Cole, passed away eight days ago. He has left his entire estate to you. I need you to come with me."

I almost laughed. I did not have a grandfather. I did not have much family at all. My mother died when I was twelve. My father had been gone since before I could form a memory of his face. I had grown up in the system, then on my own, then on whatever came next. Nobody in my family had money. Nobody in my family had anything.

"I think you have the wrong person," I said.

"I do not," Gerald Fitch said. He was very calm. "Your mother was Clara Cole, born Clara Reyes, who married Thomas Cole in 1996. Thomas Cole was the son of Victor Cole. Victor Cole founded Cole Global Industries in 1979. He died eight days ago at his Manhattan penthouse. He left a will that is very specific. Everything goes to you."

I sat with that for a long moment. The coffee had gone lukewarm in my hand. Outside, a truck rolled past on the street, its headlights sweeping through the fog.

"Everything," I repeated. "What does everything mean?"

Gerald Fitch did not blink. "Forty-seven billion dollars, Mr. Cole. Give or take, depending on market fluctuations."

The number did not land the way numbers like that are supposed to land. It did not feel real. It felt like a word in a foreign language that I could pronounce but not understand. Forty-seven billion. I looked down at my forty-two dollars and some change.

"I need a minute," I said.

"Of course," he said, and waited.

I thought about my mother. I thought about how she had never once mentioned a grandfather named Victor. Never mentioned anyone named Cole except my absent father, and even then, only in the past tense, like he was a fact that had already finished being true. She had died in a hospital bed in Lansing with nothing. We had nothing. She had worked two jobs and still we had nothing, and the whole time there was a man in Manhattan with forty-seven billion dollars who shared my last name.

I thought about that for a long time.

Then I opened the car door and got out.

Gerald Fitch looked me over once, very carefully, in a way that tried not to be obvious but was. I was wearing a gray hoodie that had been washed so many times the fabric was thin at the elbows, jeans, and boots with a crack in the left sole. I had not shaved in a week. I probably did not smell great.

"There is a car waiting," he said. "And a private jet in the morning."

"I need to get my bag," I said.

He nodded. "Of course."

I pulled my duffel out of the backseat. I locked the Civic out of habit, even though there was nothing in it worth taking. Then I followed Gerald Fitch across the parking lot toward a black car that was idling at the edge of the lot, its windows dark, its engine perfectly quiet.

I did not look back at the Honda. I told myself that was fine. I told myself I was not the kind of person who looked back.

I was lying, but it was the kind of lie you need to get moving.

The car was warm. Gerald sat beside me and opened a leather folder on his lap. He had a lot of paperwork. He started explaining things, legal things, the kind of language that is technically English but feels like another dialect entirely. I half-listened. I was watching Detroit slide past the windows, the streets I had walked a hundred times, the diner where I had spent my last eleven nights, the intersection where the stoplight had been broken for as long as I could remember.

"There will be people who contest the will," Gerald was saying. "Your uncle Raymond Cole is already planning to file. He is Victor's surviving son and he expected to inherit. The will is legally airtight, but you should be prepared for pressure."

"What kind of pressure?"

"The kind that money creates," he said. "But that is what I am here for."

I turned away from the window and looked at him. "Why did Victor leave it to me? He never once contacted me. My whole life, not one word. Why not Raymond?"

Gerald closed the folder. He was quiet for a moment. "Victor left a recorded message for you. You will see it when we arrive at the penthouse. I think it is better that you hear it from him."

"He's dead."

"He recorded it two months before he died. He was very deliberate." Gerald looked straight ahead. "Victor was deliberate about everything."

I did not ask anything else that night. I sat back and let the city move past me and tried to understand what my life had just become.

I could not.

The plane the next morning was nothing like any plane I had ever been on, and I had only been on two planes in my life, both cheap, both cramped, both smelling of recycled air and other people's anxiety. This one had wide seats that reclined almost flat, and a flight attendant who brought me coffee without being asked and called me Mr. Cole with a straightness to her voice that made it clear she was not making fun of me.

I sat with my duffel at my feet and my hands wrapped around the coffee cup and watched the clouds outside the window.

Forty-seven billion dollars.

My grandfather was dead.

I had an uncle who already hated me.

And somewhere in a Manhattan penthouse, there was a recorded message waiting for me from a man I had never met, a man who had apparently decided I was worth more than his own son.

The question that kept sitting in my chest was not what did he leave me.

It was why.

That question had teeth. I could already feel them.

We landed at a private terminal at JFK and a different car took us into the city. Gerald spent the drive on his phone, speaking in low, clipped sentences. I watched Manhattan appear through the windshield, the way it always looks in real life, bigger and louder and more indifferent than any photograph, the buildings pressing up against the sky like they are trying to push through it.

The penthouse was on the sixty-third floor of a building on Park Avenue. The lobby had marble floors and a doorman who straightened when he saw Gerald and nodded at me with the careful neutrality of someone who had been trained not to react to anything.

In the elevator, Gerald turned to me.

"The staff has been retained pending your decisions about the household," he said. "There is a head of household named Mrs. Okafor who will walk you through the property. The penthouse covers the entire sixty-third floor. There are also two floors below that are part of the estate."

"Three floors," I said.

"Victor liked space," Gerald said without humor.

The elevator opened directly into the penthouse. I stepped out and stopped.

The city was everywhere. Floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides, and through them Manhattan spread out in every direction like something that had been placed there specifically for someone to look at. The room itself was enormous and quiet, filled with dark wood furniture and shelves of books and art on the walls that I could not name but could tell was expensive the way you can tell something is heavy before you pick it up.

A woman was standing near the windows. She was in her fifties, Nigerian accent, a calm that felt built rather than born. She introduced herself as Agnes Okafor and said she would show me around whenever I was ready.

I was not ready. I was not even close to ready. But I nodded and said thank you and followed her through a home that was larger than any building I had ever lived in.

I will not describe all of it. There was too much. What I will say is that by the time Agnes showed me to the master bedroom and left me alone, I sat on the edge of a bed that cost more than my car and stared at the floor for a very long time.

Nobody came to check on me. The city glittered outside the window.

Forty-seven billion dollars.

I had no idea what I was doing here. I had no idea what I was supposed to become.

But somewhere in this building was a message from a dead man who thought I was worth all of it.

Tomorrow, I was going to find out why.

And I already had the feeling, the deep-chest, quiet-alarm feeling, that I was not going to like the answer.

My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.

But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.

In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.

"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.

"Who the fuck is Jason?"

My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.

I ran away for my life!

But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!

They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.

Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”

There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.
