Don't Let Her Come Back: The Echo Ridge Trilogy
Franklin Bagudu · Ongoing · 57.4k Words
Introduction
Then she finds the diary.
Hidden beneath the floorboards of her childhood bedroom, a leather-bound journal belonging to Larkin Crowe — a girl who vanished thirteen years ago — contains a warning written directly to Sable: "Don't let her come back. Sable — run."
As Sable investigates, the town closes ranks. Her mother gaslights her. The sheriff dismisses her. A therapist diagnoses her with psychosis. Only two people believe her: Orion Kael, a cynical local whose brother vanished six years ago, and Corbin Ash, the reclusive groundskeeper who knows more about Larkin's fate than he admits — because Larkin was his daughter.
What Sable uncovers is a pact older than the town itself: every seventeen years, Echo Ridge offers a girl to something buried beneath the well — a root that feeds on blood and keeps the town alive. Morwen was meant to be the sacrifice thirteen years ago. She traded Larkin instead. And the debt was never cleared.
Now the root wants what it was originally promised: Sable Thorne.
With three days until her birthday — and the deadline — Sable must decide whether to run, surrender, or shatter the anchor that binds the town to its curse. But breaking the pact comes with a price. And some doors, once opened, can never be closed.
Chapter 1
The rain hadn't stopped for three hours. It hammered the roof of my mother's sedan like impatient knuckles, drumming a rhythm that matched the thud behind my ribs. I pressed my forehead to the cold glass and watched the world blur past—stripped maples, sagging mailboxes, a gas station with a single flickering light.
The sign appeared without warning.
WELCOME TO ECHO RIDGE
POP. 312
I counted backward. Three hundred and twelve. That's thirteen fewer than the last time I was here.
I didn't remember being here.
I'd been five when we left. Five, with pigtails and a stuffed rabbit named Waffles who'd long since been consigned to a landfill. My mother said we'd moved because my father got a better job in the city. My mother said I'd never ask about Echo Ridge, because I'd never cared.
My mother lied.
I'd asked. Twice. Both times, she'd gone pale and changed the subject. The second time, she'd dropped a glass and cut her palm. I'd stopped asking after that, because I was eleven and I knew when to shut up.
But now we were back.
"Why?" I asked, breaking the silence for the first time in sixty miles.
My mother's knuckles were white on the steering wheel. Morwen Thorne had the hands of a concert pianist—long, elegant, perpetually tensed. She'd never played a note in her life, but she looked like she was always bracing for a key to strike.
"The house was cheap," she said. "I told you."
"You told me you'd rather chew glass than come back here."
She flinched. It was subtle—a twitch in her jaw, a tightening around her eyes—but I caught it. I'd spent seventeen years catching her tells.
"Things change, Sable."
"Right." I turned back to the window. "Things change. People lie. Water is wet."
"Don't be cruel."
"I'm not cruel. I'm observant. There's a difference."
She didn't respond. She never did when I was right.
Echo Ridge unfolded like a wound. The main street was a single stretch of cracked asphalt lined with boarded-up storefronts. A diner with a neon sign that flickered "OPEN" in a broken loop. A laundromat with a single machine. A church with a steeple that leaned slightly to the left, as if it, too, was exhausted.
The town didn't look abandoned. It looked forgotten—like a photograph left in the rain, the edges curling, the colors bleeding into grey.
My mother pulled into a gravel driveway. The house was a two-story Victorian with peeling white paint and a porch swing that swayed gently in the wind, despite the absence of wind.
"Home sweet home," I muttered.
"Don't start."
I got out of the car. The air smelled of wet earth and something else—something metallic, like old coins. I stepped onto the porch and immediately stepped on a loose board. It creaked beneath my weight.
Something about that creak hit me in the chest.
I knew that sound.
I blinked. The memory flickered—a flash of pigtails, a rabbit's floppy ear, a woman's voice singing off-key. "Larkin, Larkin, don't you cry—"
"Coming?" My mother's voice broke the spell.
I shook my head and followed her inside.
---
The house was smaller than I remembered. Or maybe I'd just been smaller. The ceilings were low, the windows narrow, the walls a faded yellow that might have been cheerful once. Now it looked like the color of old teeth.
My room was at the end of the hall. The door was painted a chipped, pale green, and it stuck when I pushed it open. Inside: a twin bed with a floral quilt, a desk with a dead lamp, and a dollhouse that I didn't remember owning.
I hated dollhouses. They reminded me of mausoleums.
I dropped my duffel on the floor and sat on the bed. The mattress sighed beneath me. The window faced the backyard, where the grass had grown wild and tangled, and beyond that—the woods.
And at the treeline, something moved.
I froze.
A shape. White. Tall. Antlers like skeletal branches.
A deer.
A white deer.
It stood perfectly still, head turned toward my window, eyes black and unblinking. I'd never seen a white deer before. I didn't think they existed in this part of the country.
I blinked.
It was gone.
I pressed my nose to the glass. Nothing. Just trees and shadows and the rain sliding down the pane.
Imagination. Stress. Long car ride.
I pulled the curtains closed and turned away.
That's when I noticed the floorboard.
It was just to the left of the bed, slightly raised, the nails loose. A square cut into the wood, almost invisible if you weren't looking.
I didn't know why I knelt. I didn't know why my heart started to pound. I just reached down, hooked my fingers under the edge, and lifted.
The diary was leather-bound, stained dark from moisture and age. The edges were frayed. The pages felt swollen, thick with humidity and secrets.
I opened it to the last entry.
The handwriting was frantic—looping, slanted, the letters pressing hard enough into the page to tear the paper.
She doesn't know she's the reason. Don't let her come back. Sable—run.
I stared at my name.
My real name, written in ink that had dried before I could even read.
I flipped back a few pages. The entries were dated thirteen years ago. The author's name was written on the inside cover.
Larkin Crowe.
A girl I'd never met. A girl who'd written my name. A girl who'd hidden her words under the floorboard of my room.
I whispered, aloud, to no one: "Who are you?"
The diary grew warm in my hands.
I dropped it with a yelp. It landed open on the quilt, pages splayed, and I watched—actually watched—as the ink shimmered, faded, and reappeared with new words.
I was your friend. I saved you. Now save yourself.
I backed away. My spine hit the wall. I pressed my hand to my mouth and forced myself to breathe.
It's fake. It's a prank. My mother set this up to—
A sound.
Creak.
The floorboard.
The same one I'd lifted.
I whirled around.
The white deer was standing in my bedroom doorway. Its hooves were silent. Its head was cocked. Its eyes—black, bottomless, ancient—fixed on me with something that looked terrifyingly like recognition.
It blinked.
I blinked.
And then it vanished—not into the hall, but into the mirror above my desk. One moment it was there, a creature of bone and light; the next, it was a reflection I could see behind me, standing in the glass, watching me from a world I couldn't touch.
I turned.
Nothing.
I turned back to the mirror.
The deer was gone.
But the diary was still warm.
And on the last page, fresh ink was bleeding through—words I hadn't written, words that shouldn't ex
ist:
Tick tock, Thorne girl. The root remembers you.
I slammed the diary shut, and for the first time in thirteen years, I heard my mother scream downstairs.

On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.
“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.
Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:
“Until you die!”
With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.
But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.
My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.
I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!

The Last of US
I’m not sure that was what I expected him to say, but I had been waiting to hear it. I smiled playfully, looking at him. “Yes, my king,” I said.
Moments, his lips were on mine. The kiss was soft and gentle at first, his hands wrapped around my waist, pulling me close to him; I let my arms find their way around his neck. I felt his tongue gently run along my lower lip and couldn’t help the soft moan that escaped my mouth at its touch. Von only took that as permission and slipped his tongue into my mouth; I let my tongue explore his mouth as he did the same to mine. Eventually, the kiss grew deeper, and before I knew it, I was straddling his lap in one quick motion. His hands found their way to my hair, tangled in it as he tugged it lightly in his grip. I couldn’t help moaning against his lips; a growl of pleasure came from deep in his throat.
My name is Arianna Maree Paxton however I Hate that name my parents gave me that name, after my , great-great grandmother. So I go by Ari. you see my parents are hardly that they hate me in every way possible. I am only here to be their slave and plaything, otherwise they probably would of killed me a long time ago. My family belong to a pride of snow leopards well now were more of a group then a pride most of us have died out. I have a feeling my species will be coming to a end soon and the worst part of it is that we will die with such a shameful legacy left behind one that I want no part of.
Were simply a small part of the shifter community, most every other shifter, magical beings live in harmony with humans and other beings. However, they do have their own rules they each follow but for the most part the respect each other, it doesn’t mean they share anything by any means. Each has their own schools, hospitals, and way of living but terrroity and lives are generally respected. However, I feel that is mostly in part to fear of the Royal family.
However my species is dying out because they have lost their way , when you force your leopard to do horrid things it will eventually leave you , which was what was happing all around me , when that happens you can no longer find a mate , and usually you lose your mind. Without mates we can no longer reproduce hence the feeling of the end coming soon. Or at least I thought that was the reason I have that feeling but I kind of feel like something bigger is on the way.
Dangerous Love with the Mafia
Driven out by her adoptive mother and sexually harassed by her boss, she stumbles into a seedy bar, desperate to drown her sorrows. There she meets Alex: sharp, devastatingly handsome, and impossibly charming.
What starts as a wild one-night stand blossoms into a tender, almost surreal romance—art galleries, riverside walks, and whispered promises that feel too perfect to be real. But when Alex vanishes without a word after a morning of gentle intimacy, Sarah is left with a hollow ache and a creeping doubt.
Their encounter was no accident. Behind Alex's blue eyes and skilled touch lies a darkness far deeper than she ever imagined—and the love that burned so bright may come with a price that could destroy her.
Iron And Glamour Just Don't Mix
Well… Sometimes you just might turn out to be right.
It turns out, the fae stole my little brother. In his place? A pixie with boundary issues and a talent for home repairs.
I’ve spent my life taking care of everyone else. So when my baby brother is taken, I don’t hesitate. I walk straight into a faerie mansion and make a bargain with its infuriatingly charming master.
Kie is everything you’d expect from a dangerous fae, beautiful, political, and entirely too amused by me. Power wrapped in a smirk. Sensual, mischievous, and far too aware of the effect he has on people. He agrees to help me find my brother.
For a price.
Now I’m bound by a faerie bargain and navigating a world of glamour, manipulation, and ancient rules I definitely should have learned sooner, enchanted forests, political games, magical contracts, and a fae lord who treats seduction like a perfectly reasonable negotiation tactic.
Iron is how I keep people out.
Glamour is how he draws them in.
And apparently, they just don’t mix.

Could I protect my babies from the husband plotting my death, hide my true identity from the Alpha who's been hunting me for years, and reclaim the freedom I'd buried along with my dreams—even if it means standing alone against the wolves who see me as nothing more than a womb to be used and discarded?

.
"I’m keeping her."
"What?"
Before I can react, he scoops her up. Her small body fits easily in the cradle of his talons. For a split second, she looks startled, but not afraid. Her hand rests against one scaled finger, and she stares up at him with that same curious wonder, as though she’s already forgotten she was ever meant to fear me.
"Put her down," I try to command, panic threading through my thoughts. "You’ll hurt her."
"She’s ours," the beast insists, possessive and fierce. "Our snowflake."

Invincible Upon Release: The Strongest Mage
Her family looked down on him, and even she herself said coldly: “You’re not worthy of being my husband.”
Everyone thought this newly released good-for-nothing was just a poor fool who’d taken the fall for his brother.
Thorne said nothing.
He merely raised his hand, gently pressing his bride’s forehead.
In an instant, the chaos in her eyes faded. Holy light surged from beneath the church, shooting into the sky.
The world’s only candidate for the Saintess, blessed with holy power, slowly opened her clear eyes before him.
