Introduction
When scholarship student Chris Linds stumbles onto a mystery someone has killed to protect, she becomes the next target. The only person standing between her and death is Ashen Ford, the academy's cold, untouchable Student Council President—and heir to one of Corvain's founding families.
As anonymous invitations summon twelve students into the legendary Legacy Game, alliances fracture, secrets surface, and every challenge brings another deadly truth to light. But the greatest secret isn't who will win.
It's why one winner vanished without a trace... and why someone will do anything to make sure history repeats itself.
Chapter 1
The gates of Corvain Academy were black iron and twice the height of a grown man, and they opened without making a sound.
Chris Linds had expected a groan. Something rusted. Something that matched the stone.
They swung apart, smooth and patient, like they had been waiting all summer.
She stepped through.
Behind her, the bus pulled away. It was the only bus. Everyone else arrived in cars with drivers who did not speak.
The driveway curved up through old trees toward a building that looked less like a school and more like a place where decisions got made. Chris shifted her duffel to her other shoulder. The strap had already worn a line into her skin.
She counted forty students on the path ahead of her.
Nobody was talking.
That was the first strange thing. Four hundred years of history, a hundred million dollars of landscaping, and the loudest sound on campus was gravel under shoes. No shouting. No one calling a name across the lawn.
Chris looked at the students as she passed. Their blazers fit. That was the difference she noticed first, and she hated that she noticed it. Every jacket sat like it had been built there. Her own sleeves ran long, and the tag inside still had someone else's initials on it in faded marker.
Second thing. Nobody looked at anybody. They looked slightly past each other, the way people do in elevators.
Then the engine noise came up the drive.
Chris heard it before she understood it. Low. Expensive. The kind of sound that money makes when it is trying to be quiet.
The students on the path stepped aside. All of them. Not politely, not slowly. They moved like water going around a stone, left and right, off the gravel and onto the grass, and then they stood there with their hands at their sides.
Chris kept walking.
She was thinking about her room number. About whether breakfast ended at eight or eight thirty. About her mother's face at the bus station, tight and careful, the way it went whenever Corvain came up.
She did not notice the path was empty until the car stopped six feet from her.
Black. Long. Windows like a river at night.
It did not honk. It did not inch forward. It simply stopped and sat there, and the whole world stopped with it.
Chris stood in the middle of the gravel, alone, one bag on her shoulder, forty pairs of eyes on her back.
The rear door opened.
A boy got out.
He was tall and he did not hurry, and the first thing she thought was that he looked tired in a way that had nothing to do with sleep. Dark hair. Gray eyes. A silver pin on his collar that caught the sun.
He stopped, because she was standing exactly where he needed to walk.
Somebody on the grass made a small sound. A breath, pulled in.
Chris understood, then, that something was supposed to happen now. She could feel the shape of it in the silence. There was a script here, and every person on this lawn knew it, and she had walked into the middle of it holding a duffel bag from a thrift store.
She did not move.
She had thought about it. That was the part she would remember later. A full second to step aside, and she stood there instead, because her feet decided something before her head caught up.
The boy looked at her.
He did not look angry. That was what threw her. He looked at her the way you look at a word in a book that is spelled wrong, one you have to read twice to be sure.
"You're new," he said.
His voice was quiet. He did not raise it. He did not have to. Everyone on that lawn heard him anyway.
"First day," Chris said.
"I can tell."
"Is there a rule about the path?"
Something moved across his face. It was gone before she could name it.
"No," he said. "There's no rule."
Then he walked around her.
Not through her. Not past her with a shoulder. Around, three steps, and up toward the entrance, and the car pulled away behind him, and that was it.
Chris stood there and waited for the rest.
The rest did not come.
The students came back onto the path in ones and twos, and the noise rose maybe two percent, which at Corvain counted as an uproar. A boy she had never seen grabbed her elbow.
"Are you insane?"
She pulled her arm free. "Who was that?"
He stared at her like she had asked him what water was.
"Ashen Ford," he said.
"Okay."
"No." He shook his head slowly. "Not okay. Nobody stands in front of him. Nobody."
"Why not?"
The boy opened his mouth. Closed it. He looked over his shoulder, quick, at nothing in particular, and Chris watched him decide not to answer.
"Just move next time," he said, and he left.
Chris stood on the gravel and worked on that. Not he'll report you. Not he'll get you expelled. Nobody had told her what Ashen Ford would do to her.
They had told her that nobody does it.
Those were different sentences.
She walked the rest of the way up, and stopped at the entrance, because she had to.
The arch was carved stone, worn soft by three hundred years of weather. High above the doors, cut deep and filled with something that had gone dark green, was the crest.
A bird on a broken crown. Wings folded. Head turned to the side, one eye out toward the driveway. Around it, twelve small stars in silver.
One of the stars had gone dull. Not chipped. Not damaged. Just dull, like someone had stopped polishing it a long time ago and everyone had agreed to leave it that way.
Chris looked at it for maybe four seconds. Old school, old crest, somebody's family shield from a century nobody alive remembered. Every place like this had one.
For half a breath the dull star looked scratched, like a hand had done it on purpose. Then she blinked and it was just old.
Under it, the letters were larger.
POWER IS NEVER GIVEN. IT IS CHOSEN.
She snorted. Quietly. Out of habit.
"Cheerful," she said to nobody.
Then she went in, and the doors closed behind her with the same soft, waiting sound the gates had made.
She did not hear the two seniors standing under the arch.
She did not see the way one of them watched her go, or the way the other one had already taken out a phone.
"That's the scholarship kid?"
"That's her."
A pause. The phone screen lit a face from below.
"He stopped for her."
"I know."
"He doesn't stop."
The first one put the phone away and looked up at the dull star for a moment, the way you look at a clock you already know the time on.
"Send the name up," he said.
"To who?"
"You know to who." He was already walking. "Same as her father."
"She's already been noticed."
