Introduction

When nineteen-year-old Seraphina Winters returns home after her mother’s sudden marriage, she expects distance and discomfort not the magnetic pull of her new stepfather. Damon Blackwood is powerful, guarded, and dangerously attentive, and living under the same roof makes every glance feel like a test of control.

As secrets rise and boundaries blur, Seraphina is forced to confront feelings she never invited, while Damon struggles between duty, guilt, and a desire he refuses to name. In a house built on wealth and silence, one wrong step could destroy them both.

Some love stories aren’t meant to begin but once they do, they refuse to end quietly.

Chapter 1

CHAPTER ONE

Seraphina's POV

By the time the car slowed in front of the gate, my body felt hollowed out.

I wasn’t exactly tired. It was more like I had been wrung dry, like I had left pieces of myself behind at bus stations, airports, and quiet bathrooms where I had stared at my reflection for too long.

“Miss Winters…” the driver said softly, as if he was afraid I would break. “We’re here.”

I looked up.

The house rose out of the darkness like it was watching me.

Calling it a mansion felt wrong. Mansions belonged in movies, not in real life and definitely not waiting for girls who no longer knew where they fit.

The place was all sharp lines, glass, and shadows. It looked cold even from a distance, with the lights glowing low and controlled.

It was not warm or welcoming. Not home.

I swallowed and pushed the door open myself. My bag felt heavier now, like it knew it didn’t belong here either.

The front steps were wide. Too wide.

Every footstep echoed as I climbed them, the sound bouncing back at me like a question I didn’t have an answer to.

I stopped at the door, curled my fingers around the handle, and took a deep breath.

"It's fine. It's just a house." I whispered.

"Just a visit."

"Just my mother’s new marriage."

I knocked.

The sound disappeared into the quiet. For a moment, nothing happened.

My chest tightened with a strange, fragile hope that no one would answer. Maybe I could turn around, laugh, and tell the driver there had been a mistake.

Then the door opened.

It wasn’t my mother.

The man standing there filled the doorway in a way that felt deliberate, like the house had been built around him.

He was tall and broad shouldered, dressed simply in a dark shirt and pants. His sleeves were rolled up, revealing his forearms, which had faint lines on them that I didn’t have time to examine.

His eyes settled on me. He looked at me the way people looked at locked doors.

Measuring. Assessing.

“Seraphina.”

My name sounded heavy coming from him.

I blinked. “I…”

“You’re late,” he said calmly.

He didn’t sound annoyed or surprised. He was simply stating a fact.

I tightened my grip on my bag.

“I didn’t realize I had a curfew.”

One corner of his mouth twitched. Almost a smile.

“You don’t.”

Then why did it feel like I did?

He stepped aside. Not enough to be polite, just enough to let me pass if I chose to.

The space between us felt strange. Almost charged, like static waiting to snap.

“Come in.”

I hesitated before crossing the threshold.

The house smelled like polished wood and something sharper underneath. It wasn’t flowers or food.

It smelled like control.

The door closed behind me with a soft click that somehow sounded too loud.

I turned to face him properly and forced my chin up.

“I’m Seraphina. My mom, Catherine, said she’d be here.”

“I know who you are.”

That unsettled me more than it should have.

He studied me openly. He wasn’t being rude, but there was something thorough about the way his eyes moved over me. My coat. My worn sneakers. Even the way I stood, as if I was bracing myself for impact.

I straightened.

“And you are?”

“Damon Blackwood.”

The name settled into the room like it belonged there.

“Right,” I said. “You’re… her husband.”

“Yes.”

The word sat between us for a moment.

He then gestured toward the hallway. “Your room is ready. You’ll want to rest.”

Something about the way he said your room sent a strange ripple through me. It was as if he had already placed me somewhere in this house.

Categorized me.

“I didn’t ask for a tour,” I said before I could stop myself.

His gaze sharpened. He didn’t look angry.

If anything, he looked interested.

“No,” he agreed. “You didn’t.”

Silence stretched between us. I waited for him to react. To correct me. He didn’t.

Instead, he said, “Your mother was called away unexpectedly. She’ll be back tomorrow.”

Of course, she would.

I nodded, pretending it didn’t sting.

“I’ll manage.”

“I’m sure you will.”

There was that faint edge again. Like he knew something about me that I didn’t.

I shifted my weight.

“Look, I’m tired. If you’ll just tell me where...”

“Second floor. End of the hall. Left.”

I frowned.

“You memorized that awfully fast.”

Another almost-smile appeared on his face.

“I like order.”

Figures.

I turned toward the stairs, but something at the back of my mind made me stop.

“How did you know my name?” I asked without turning around.

There was a brief pause.

“Catherine talks about you.”

That should have made me feel better, but it didn’t.

I glanced back.

He hadn’t moved. His arms were crossed as he watched me. The light cut across his face, creating shadows that made him look less like a man and more like something I couldn’t quite understand.

“Oh,” I said quietly.

“Good night, Seraphina.”

My name sounded different in his voice.

Slower.

“Good night.”

I went upstairs. The room was large. Too large.

It was pristine and untouched, like no one had ever planned to really live there. I dropped my bag at the foot of the bed and sat down, listening as the silence pressed in from all sides.

This house wasn’t empty. It was watching.

I lay back and stared at the ceiling, replaying the moment at the door.

The way he had looked at me. The way he had said my name.

The way he had already known me.

I told myself I was imagining things. I was tired. Tomorrow will be normal.

It had to be.

My eyes slowly grew heavy as I drifted toward sleep.

Then something shifted.

A sound.

Soft and deliberate. From the hallway.

My eyes snapped open. I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

They got closer until they stopped right outside my door. I held my breath.

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

Then I heard the faint sound of someone breathing on the other side. My heart began to pound.

Who was outside my room?

I pushed myself up slowly and stared at the door.

Then...

A hand touched the handle.
