Chapter 1
The day I found out I was carrying twins, my husband offered me $13.5 million for a divorce.
After two and a half years on a $500 monthly allowance, I had one urgent question:
Where did I sign?
Ethan and his girlfriend thought I was hiding my heartbreak.
I was hiding an ultrasound picture—and trying to leave before he changed his mind.
——————————————————————
“There are two,” the doctor said, turning the ultrasound screen toward me.
I was twelve weeks pregnant, alone at an appointment on March 10, and still wearing a sweatshirt with a grocery list in the pocket. I'd known about the pregnancy for weeks. Two babies were a considerable change to the plan.
“Two,” I repeated.
She pointed them out. I leaned toward the screen, trying to understand how those small moving shapes were both inside me.
Then my phone rang.
Ethan Caldwell. My husband, who hadn't asked about my day in months, had chosen this one to call.
The doctor gave me a moment while she finished her notes. I answered with the phone pressed close to my ear.
“Nora, I've thought about it,” he said. “Thirteen and a half million. We end this cleanly.”
I looked from the screen to the ceiling.
“Dollars?”
“Obviously.”
For thirty months, Ethan had transferred $500 into my account on the first of each month. That covered groceries, gas, toiletries, and anything else I needed. He paid for the house and its bills directly. I had no access to his accounts, no card I could use, and no paycheck after he'd insisted I quit working when we married.
Thirty months. Fifteen thousand dollars.
Now he was offering $13.5 million to stop being his wife.
“Okay,” I said.
Silence.
“What?”
“Okay. When can I sign?”
I heard a woman speak near him, softly enough that she probably thought I couldn't hear.
“She's putting on a brave face. Don't let her get to you.”
Vanessa Hale. I'd heard her voice in enough videos, laughing beside Ethan at parties I hadn't been invited to, to recognize it.
I almost thanked her.
“Send me the agreement,” I said. “I can be there tomorrow.”
“You don't need to make a scene.”
“I'm making an appointment.”
He said his counsel would send the paperwork and hung up. I lay still for another second. The doctor handed me tissues to wipe the gel from my stomach.
“Would you like me to go over the images again?”
“Yes. Please.”
This time I put my phone away.
She showed me the two babies, each in a separate sac, and talked me through the follow-up care she wanted. I asked her to repeat part of it. There was too much to take in, and I didn't want the thing Ethan had said to crowd out the thing she'd told me first.
Two babies. I was going to have two babies.
In the hall, I sent my best friend, Maya Brooks, a message.
Ethan wants a divorce. He's offering $13.5 million.
Her reply arrived before I reached the elevator.
Please tell me you said yes.
Already did.
And here I thought you married him for his looks.
I did. The settlement is a pleasant surprise.
Then I sent the ultrasound picture.
She called immediately.
“Are those both yours?”
“I hope so. Otherwise this clinic has a very strange rewards program.”
“Nora.” Her voice softened. “Oh, honey. Does he know?”
“No.”
“Are you going to tell him?”
I stood beside the elevator while a couple came out, the man carrying a folder and his partner's coat. He asked if she wanted to get lunch. She said she wanted to go home first, and he said okay.
Such an ordinary conversation. I watched them longer than I meant to.
“Not now,” I told Maya. “I want the agreement first.”
Outside, the fuel light came on as soon as I started the old SUV Ethan had handed down to me. I had just enough money left for gas and lunch if lunch was cheap. I put a little gas in the tank, then stopped at a noodle shop near the bus station.
I'd taken the bus to earlier appointments to save the fuel. Today I'd driven because I was tired of feeling sick on the ride home.
The woman at the counter asked if I wanted chicken in my soup. I looked at the board.
“Just an egg, please.”
While I waited, I set my imitation designer bag on the empty chair. Vanessa had a real one. Several real ones, in fact. Ethan appeared in the background of her photographs, paying for dinner or reaching for a car door. When I'd once asked him for a decent bag, he'd looked up from his phone and said, “Where would you take it?”
I'd stopped going to work because he'd wanted me home. Then he'd stopped taking me anywhere because I was always home.
At first, I'd argued. I had sent him job listings, asked about dinners, suggested we go out together. He would get impatient, and I would spend the rest of the evening wondering how a small request had become another exhausting fight. Eventually, I learned to do the shopping and the cleaning and leave his schedule alone.
The soup arrived just as the agreement appeared in my inbox.
I let the noodles cool while I read it. Ethan would keep the house and vehicles. I would receive three payments of $4.5 million, due March 20, April 20, and May 20. The account would be mine. There were clauses about privacy, personal belongings, and leaving each other alone.
He was apparently worried I might interfere with his happy future.
I had no plans to spend $13.5 million following him around.
Still, I read every page twice. Wanting to sign quickly didn't mean I wanted to discover afterward that quickly was all I had gotten. Maya arranged a brief independent legal review that evening, and I sent the draft over. I wanted the payment obligation checked, not a speech about whether I should save my marriage.
The answer, when it came, was practical: the stated amount and schedule were there, the house wasn't mine to take, and signing would not by itself make the divorce final. There was no schedule for children in the document. I kept my pregnancy to myself and asked no one to make promises on their behalf.
Back at the house, Ethan's dress shoes were still lined up by the entry. He hadn't slept there in two weeks. The last time he'd come by, he'd collected a jacket and asked why the front windows were dirty.
Our wedding portrait hung above the console table. I was smiling at him. I remembered that smile, and the effort I'd put into making him smile back during the months after it.
I went upstairs to pack.
Vanessa messaged while I was folding my clothes.
I know this is hard. I never meant to hurt you. Ethan and I really do love each other.
I read it sitting on the edge of the bed. There had been a time when that message would have kept me awake all night. Now I needed to find my birth certificate and the charger behind the dresser.
I hope you're happy together, I wrote.
Then, because she might mistake it for sarcasm: I mean that.
I didn't know what kind of husband Ethan would be to her. I knew what kind he'd been to me. I tucked the ultrasound picture inside my folder of personal documents, where neither of them would see it.
Tomorrow, I would sign.
Tonight, I checked that my phone was charged and set two alarms.
