Introduction

After six years of marriage, Celia's name appeared only on a confidentiality agreement.
On the night of their anniversary, through the glass she saw her husband Arthur, their daughter Léonie, and Diana—the socialite with "only five months left"—dining together. She asked for a divorce, and got only one sentence in return: "Play your part as Mrs. Winston."
Every step after that was hard: her accounts were frozen, her studio was forced to hand over its work, and at a competition the restroom door was locked from the outside. But when she was at her most wretched, someone caught her. Victor had originally been just an employer, hiring her to drive his niece Ivy to and from places; he sewed a tracker into her coat and brought people to the scene during a kidnapping. The two of them went from an employment contract to standing side by side.
It was also then that her origins were exposed—she was actually a daughter of the Harrington family, and her mother had left her founding shares on her deathbed. Unfortunately, her father and two older brothers never acknowledged her: they would rather she did not exist than have her written into the list of heirs.
She still returned to the family. At the family council, her father's veto, her brothers' mockery, and the shareholders' wait-and-see attitude bore down on her all at once. One by one, she laid out the contracts and evidence her mother had left behind, and what she got in return was silence filling the room.
That was when Victor stood by her side. He taught her how to read the books, how to set prices, when to give an inch, and when not to retreat a single step. All winter, the two of them kept watch under a single lamp, prying her mother's shares back from others' hands layer by layer.
On the night before the final document was settled, she obtained a seat on the board.
That same night, Victor disappeared.
His phone was unreachable, his apartment empty, and on the table there was only a half-finished glass of water, and the half of his past he had never been willing to mention.

Chapter 1

Celia's POV

I closed the greenhouse an hour early because I wanted the evening clean.

I washed the soil off my hands at the potting sink, then again with the nail brush. There would be a photograph somewhere before the night was over, and I was not going to stand in it with dirt under my nails. The coat I chose was the beige wool, three winters old. I told myself the coat did not matter.

In the mirror by the door, my hair was fine and my eyes were tired. I decided that was acceptable too, because tonight was not about how I looked.

Tonight was one dinner, one table, one mother sitting at it with her family. I had been waiting a long time to be that woman in public.

The drive to Brighton took twenty-two minutes. I spent most of them thinking about nothing, which is a skill I got good at over six years.

I’d booked the restaurant three weeks earlier. Arthur had told me to add it to his calendar himself. He’d read the date out loud over breakfast, and later, while I stood beside him holding garden shears, he repeated it on a phone call — both times speaking as if it were a date just for us.

I parked in the pickup line with the other mothers and turned the engine off. For the first time in months I felt like I was standing in the right place.

The woman at the front desk had a professionally calibrated smile. "Miss Winston was picked up at three-forty by Mr. Winston," she said. Her voice did not change at all.

I thanked her and went back outside. I stood on the emptying sidewalk with my phone in my hand and told myself there was probably a reason. There is always a reason, and I had gotten very good at accepting them.

The first call rang until it stopped. The second went straight to voicemail, which meant his phone was on. It meant he had seen my name and made a decision about it.

I pressed my thumb hard into the center of my palm until my nail left a mark.

Maybe he had picked Leonie up early and gone straight to the restaurant, to be there when I walked in. Maybe he had ordered already, and she was sitting on the banquette with her coat folded beside her, checking the door every time it opened. Maybe this was the one night he had decided to be early instead of late.

I got into the car and drove into the city anyway.

The host found the reservation and walked me to a table set. Three menus on the cloth. I sat down facing the door, ordered water, and put my phone face-up beside the glass.

The seat across from me was vacant. Had they decided not to show? Where on earth were they? I thought to myself.

For the first half hour I read the menu the way you read something you have no intention of buying. For the second half hour I watched the door.

The man with the water pitcher came by twice. The second time he did not ask whether I was expecting someone, and that small kindness from a stranger was the closest anyone had come to touching me in a month.

I looked at the glass instead and counted minutes. No message came at nine. No message came at ten.

At ten past ten I paid for water and a basket of bread I had never touched. Then, because there was nothing else left in me to do, I opened the app.

In March, I’d bought her a new watch. That afternoon, she vanished from the second floor of the department store. My heart hammered as I wandered through the cosmetics and handbag section for nineteen minutes, until I found her by the shoes, clutching a pair of boots still tagged.

I begged Zoe to have someone install a tracking system in it for me. She knew a guy from her reporting days, some ex-systems contractor who did exactly this kind of quiet work for people who could not go through official channels, and he put the module in her watch in an afternoon. I paid him cash. When Arthur found out, he asked if I planned to put a chip in her neck next.

I kept the app on my phone and never brought it up again.

This time I opened it. The pin wasn’t at Blackwood. It blinked on the far side of the city. I looked up the address twice, unable to trust the first result. I sat in that parking lot, engine running, hands resting flat on the wheel, for longer than I cared to admit. In the end, I drove there.

The window was floor to ceiling and lit from behind. That meant I could see all of it without trying, and without being seen.

Arthur had his jacket off and his sleeves rolled to the elbow. Diana sat across from him in the cream sweater, with a port taped to the back of her hand. Beside her sat my daughter, leaning in, laughing at something I could not hear.

Leonie pushed a piece of cake across the table toward the other plate. Diana made the small pleased face. Arthur reached over and drew the gray throw up around her shoulders without once looking up from the wine list.

On the edge of the table, in the clay pot Leonie and I had painted over three separate weekends, sat the succulent she brought home in April and told me it was going to live in my room.

I stood downstairs and watched what unfolded for roughly ten seconds. Ten seconds sounded brief, yet it stretched out endlessly. Long enough to see your husband speak softly to someone else. Long enough to watch your child take a side without even knowing it. Long enough to realize no one brings a potted plant along in an emergency.

I did not push the door open. If I walked in, I would be the woman who walked in, and that was the last thing I still owned.

I drove home with my hands at ten and two and let the tears come, and they came without any sound at all, sliding down one at a time and soaking into the collar of the beige wool.

I did not wipe them off. There was nobody in the car to perform for, and the windshield kept blurring and clearing, blurring and clearing, with the streetlights smearing across the glass at every intersection.

I pulled into the garage and cut the lights but did not get out. I sat in the dark with my hands still on the wheel and let the last of it drain out of me, one long shudder and then nothing, the way a wound stops when it has finished bleeding.

When my breathing was even again I reached up and wiped my face with the flat of my hand, and I checked myself in the rearview mirror the way you check a room before you leave it. The woman in the glass looked tired and calm and entirely finished. I locked the car, went inside, made tea, and sat down to wait for my family to come home.

It was after eleven when the car came up the drive. Leonie came in first, still in her school coat, and stopped in front of me with her chin up and her hands folded the way Eleanor had trained her to stand for portraits.

"We weren't trying to skip it," she said. "Auntie Di got sick this afternoon, and the doctor said she might only have five months. You're not going to be mad about that, are you?"

She said it kindly and slowly, the way you speak to somebody you have been told to be patient with. Every word had been handed to her by someone else.

I crouched down until we were the same height, which I had not done in a long time, and looked at her face, "Leonie," I said. "Go to your room."

She went, because a child obeys a tone long before she understands a reason. I stayed where I was until the door clicked upstairs.

Then I stood up and looked at Arthur, who had not taken off his coat and had not said one word since he walked in. "Arthur," I said. "I want a divorce."

I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.
