Chapter 4
The days that followed were a blur of activity and emotions, yet the emptiness inside me remained. Ethan and Chloe had lost everything, their carefully constructed world falling apart, but it hadn’t brought me the peace I had hoped for. In fact, it only made me feel more lost.
Luca had been by my side throughout this ordeal, his presence unwavering.
He had helped me take down Ethan and Chloe, but as their empire crumbled, something shifted between us.
I started to realize that I was no longer just relying on him for support.
The bond between us had deepened, but I couldn’t tell if it was genuine or if I was simply clinging to someone who had been my anchor in this storm.
I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about him.
His kindness, his strength, his unwavering support.
But was it all just part of the plan?
Had I been manipulated from the beginning?
Or was this real?
“Lena,” Luca’s voice broke through my thoughts. He was standing by the window, looking out at the city below. “You’ve done what you set out to do. It’s over now.”
I nodded, but my heart wasn’t at ease. “It doesn’t feel over,” I said softly, my voice tinged with uncertainty. “Everything’s changed, but I still feel empty. Even with everything that’s happened… I don’t feel like I’ve won.”
Luca turned to face me, his expression unreadable. “You’ve gained your freedom, Lena. That’s all that matters now.”
Freedom. The word echoed in my mind, but it didn’t fill the void. I had been freed from Ethan’s betrayal, freed from Chloe’s manipulation, but was I truly free?
Or was I just trapped in a new prison of my own making, one where I no longer knew who I was without them?
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
I kept replaying the events in my head, trying to make sense of it all.
But no matter how much I thought about it, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.
The next morning, Luca arrived at my apartment as usual. There was a sense of urgency in his step, something different about him today. He didn’t seem like the calm, composed Luca I had come to know.
“Lena, we need to talk,” he said, his voice low, as he closed the door behind him.
I looked up at him, my heart racing. “What’s wrong?”
Luca’s eyes met mine, and for the first time, I saw something darker in them. “I’ve been working with you, helping you, because I thought it was the right thing to do,” he began. “But now I need to be honest with you. There’s more at stake than you realize.”
I took a step back, my chest tightening. “What do you mean?” I whispered.
Luca sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I’ve been playing a game, Lena. A much bigger game than just revenge on Ethan and Chloe. You were always part of the plan. But not in the way you think.”
I felt my breath catch in my throat. “What are you talking about?”
He walked closer to me, his eyes intense, piercing through me as if he was trying to see through my very soul. “You’ve always been an asset, Lena. From the moment you decided to fight back, I saw an opportunity. You’ve been part of my strategy all along.”
I felt my stomach drop. “So… everything was a lie?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Luca’s expression softened, but there was still a coldness in his eyes. “No, not everything. I didn’t lie to you about everything. But the truth is, I’ve been using you to get what I need.”
I recoiled, the words slicing through me. “You used me?”
Luca’s gaze faltered for a brief moment, but he quickly regained his composure. “I didn’t want to hurt you, Lena. I never intended for things to go this far. But now that it’s done, I can’t undo it. The truth is, I’ve been working towards something greater than just taking down Ethan and Chloe.”
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself, but the realization was overwhelming. “What is it that you want, Luca?” I asked, my voice trembling.
He looked at me with an emotion I couldn’t read. “Power, Lena. Control. Everything I’ve done, everything I’ve helped you with, was all to build my own future. I needed your strength to get what I wanted.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “And me? What do you want with me?”
Luca stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “I want you, Lena. But not in the way you think. I need you to stand by my side, to help me build something that Ethan and Chloe could never take away.”
My mind was reeling, the truth crashing over me in waves.
I had been a pawn in Luca’s game, just as I had been with Ethan and Chloe.
But Luca was different.
He wasn’t just manipulating me for revenge. He was using me to build his empire.
I stood there, frozen, as Luca waited for me to say something, anything.
But I couldn’t find the words.
The betrayal felt deeper this time, sharper. I had trusted Luca, relied on him, believed that he was helping me because he cared.
But now I saw the truth.
I had been just another tool for him, just as I had been for Ethan and Chloe.
“Lena,” Luca’s voice was gentle, almost pleading. “Please. I didn’t want this to happen. But now that you know, I need you to decide. Will you stand by my side, or will you walk away?”
I wanted to walk away. I wanted to leave, to find a way to escape from this web of lies and manipulation. But deep down, I knew I had no place to go. I had already lost everything. Ethan. Chloe. Even my own sense of self.
I had been using Luca to get my revenge, but now it seemed like I was the one who had been used. I could walk away, but where would I go? What would I become?
“I don’t know what to do,” I whispered, my voice cracking. “I don’t know who I am anymore.”
Luca’s face softened. “I understand, Lena. I never wanted to make you feel like this. But you have to choose. You have the power to decide what comes next.”
The silence between us grew heavy, and I realized that I had never truly been free. Not from Ethan. Not from Chloe. And not even from Luca. I had been a pawn in their game, and now I was a pawn in his.
I didn’t know what to do. But I knew one thing for sure—I couldn’t keep living like this. Not anymore.
