My Patient is My One Night Stand Lover
silas · Ongoing · 242.3k Words
Introduction
After one reckless night, Lucy Lowe flees her boss Ethan Reid's bedroom at dawn—having crossed every professional line, using the clinical psychology skills she swore never to touch again to pull him back from a violent PTSD flashback. Shame and reason tell her: this was the one mistake that must end here.
Until that midnight hour.
When she logs into an encrypted platform as "Dr. Whisper," her anonymous therapist persona, her world collapses. On the other side of the screen is "Ranger"—the veteran she has treated for eight months, sharing his trauma and loneliness. His syntax, his breathing, the scars she once traced in the dark—all of it points to one man: Ethan Reid.
Now he stands before her, offering a mad solution: marriage. Not for love, but for survival. A contract to silence office gossip, to contain an unplanned pregnancy, to shield her from the storm of his world. Lucy signs with her secret intact, moves into his mansion, wears his ring, and pretends this is only a transaction.
But as the Milan Fashion Week spotlights rise, as her ex Quinn closes in with "evidence" about her mother's case, and as Dr. Chapman—the psychologist who falsified testimony—finally appears before her… Lucy must choose before everything crumbles: keep hiding behind the mask, or risk it all—including the heart she has not yet dared to name—to reclaim her truth?
Chapter 1
Lucy's POV
I wake to the weight of a stranger's arm across my waist and the smell of cedar and gun oil, and it takes three disorienting seconds to remember what I've done.
Ethan Reid. My CEO. Sleeping beside me in sheets that cost more than my monthly rent, his face peaceful in a way I've never seen during waking hours. The military watch on his wrist shows a heart rate of 68—steady, calm, exactly where it should be after I spent twenty minutes talking him down from a PTSD flashback that had his heart racing at 178.
After I used every technique I'd sworn never to use again without proper licensing.
After we had unprotected sex on these same expensive sheets.
The shame hits like a physical blow. I slide out from under his arm carefully, my head pounding with the worst hangover of my life. The bedside clock reads 6:47 AM. Sunday morning. I have maybe an hour before he wakes up and I have to face what I've done.
My dress is on the floor, torn at the seam, missing two buttons. Evidence. I find one of his t-shirts and pull it on, the fabric soft and expensive, smelling like him.
The memories come back in fragments, each one worse than the last.
It started with Quinn. Of course it started with Quinn.
I'd seen them at the company party—my boyfriend of five years with his hand on Diana Lawson's thigh, whispering something that made her laugh. Diana, my Columbia classmate, my supposed friend, wearing a Hermès Birkin and a smile that said she'd already won.
I'd known about the affair for two weeks. The late-night texts he'd tried to hide. The sudden "business trips" to Boston where Diana's family had investments. But seeing them together, watching him touch her the way he used to touch me, something inside me had simply broken.
So I'd done what any rational person would do: drunk an entire bottle of champagne on an empty stomach and stumbled into the parking garage at midnight, phone dead, vision blurring, trying to summon an Uber I couldn't afford.
The black Mercedes had been idling near the elevator. Back door open. Leather seats that looked soft and safe. I'd fallen into them without checking, without thinking.
That's when Sean Calloway appeared—Ethan's assistant, MIT graduate, the kind of competent that made me feel like a disaster. "Ms. Lowe, you've gotten into Mr. Reid's vehicle by mistake. Let me call you a car—"
But then his phone rang. I'd watched his face change, professional calm cracking into fear.
"How bad?" A pause. "I'm twenty minutes out. Get Dr. Norton on standby." He'd looked at me, then at the driver's seat where Ethan sat rigid, eyes unfocused. Then back at me. Making calculations. "Ms. Lowe, do you have any medical training? Crisis response experience?"
The champagne made me honest. "Tavistock Clinic. London. Clinical psychology."
Something shifted in Sean's eyes. Relief, maybe. Desperation. "Ok,fine."
And just like that, I arrived ai a villa together and found Ethan in the study. On the floor. Hands over his ears. Heart rate monitor showing 168. Eyes open but unseeing, locked on some horror only he could perceive.
I recognized the presentation immediately—classic acute PTSD flashback. His nervous system had hijacked his conscious mind, trapping him in a traumatic memory so vivid his body couldn't distinguish past from present. The elevated heart rate, the hyperventilation, the dissociative stare—textbook sympathetic nervous system activation.
Sean had tried standard grounding techniques—"Mr. Reid, you're safe, you're home"—but Ethan's breathing had only gotten worse, his pupils dilating, his whole body locked in fight-or-flight. The verbal reassurance wasn't penetrating. He needed something more concrete, something that could override the sensory memory.
And I'd made a choice. A catastrophic, irreversible choice.
I dropped to my knees in front of him, close enough that I entered his peripheral vision but not so close that I triggered a defensive response.
"My name is Lucy." I kept my voice low and steady, pitching it below the frequency that would register as threat. "I'm in your study. It's 11:47 PM on a Friday night. You're in your house on Long Island. The threat is not active. You are safe."
No response. His eyes were still tracking something I couldn't see, his hands pressed so hard against his ears I could see his knuckles whitening.
I needed to give him something physical to anchor to—something that would pull him out of the memory and back into his body. Slowly, telegraphing my movement, I reached for his right hand and gently pulled it away from his ear.
"Feel this." I placed his palm flat against the hardwood floor. "This is oak. Smooth. Cool. Solid. Press down. Feel the grain under your fingers."
His fingers twitched. A flicker of awareness.
"Good. Now tell me—without opening your eyes—what do you feel?"
"Wood." His voice was hoarse, distant, but it was a response. His nervous system was starting to recognize input from the present.
"That's right. Wood. You're on a floor. In your study. Not there. Here." I kept my voice steady, clinical, the way I'd been trained at Tavistock. "Now I'm going to touch your shoulder. Just pressure. No pain. Ready?"
I didn't wait for an answer—he was still too dissociated to give one. I placed my hand on his left shoulder, applying firm, grounding pressure to the trapezius muscle. The kind of proprioceptive input that signals safety to the autonomic nervous system.
His breathing hitched. I watched his heart rate on the monitor: 165.
"I'm going to count, and you're going to breathe with me. In for four counts, hold for four, out for six. This is called box breathing. Your body knows how to do this. Just follow my voice."
I demonstrated, making my own breathing audible. "In—two—three—four. Hold—two—three—four. Out—two—three—four—five—six."
After three cycles, his chest started to move in sync with mine. The parasympathetic nervous system kicking in, overriding the panic response.
Heart rate: 158.
"You're doing great. Keep breathing. Now I need you to tell me three things you can see right now. Don't think. Just look and name them."
His eyes finally focused, scanning the room. "Desk." A pause. "Books." Another pause. "Window."
"Perfect. Now two things you can hear."
"Your voice." His breathing was slowing. "Clock ticking."
"And one thing you can smell."
For the first time, his gaze shifted to me. Really seeing me. "Champagne."
Heart rate: 145.
The grounding technique was working—pulling him through his five senses, forcing his brain to process present-moment input instead of the traumatic memory. I kept my hand on his shoulder, maintaining that physical anchor.
"You're back. You're here. The flashback is over. Your body is safe."
"Who are you?" Not my name. Who are you really?
I should have lied. Should have maintained boundaries. Instead, drunk and heartbroken and so tired of pretending, I'd told him the truth.
"Lucy Lowe. Design department, third floor. But I used to study psychology. " I stopped. "Before I had to leave the field."
"You're trained." He'd said it with absolute certainty, his eyes tracking the way I was still monitoring his breathing, the way my hand remained on his shoulder in that specific grounding position.
"Emergency response doesn't require a license," I'd whispered. "But anything beyond that... I can't. I'm not allowed."
He'd absorbed this, still breathing hard, his body still coming down from the adrenaline spike. "Thank you. I know it cost you something."
"You should rest," I'd said, trying to change the topic. "After a flashback that severe, your cortisol levels will stay elevated for hours. You need to let your nervous system reset."
"There's no one to call." His voice had been raw, stripped of all CEO armor. "No one who understands what just happened. No one who knows how to—" He'd looked at me with something desperate. "Stay. Please. I don't want to be alone."
I should have said no. Should have called Sean back, maintained boundaries, remembered that what I'd just done existed in a legal gray area between Good Samaritan and unauthorized practice.
Instead, I'd seen the same loneliness in his eyes that I'd been drowning in all night. Quinn's betrayal. Diana's triumph. Five years wasted. The crushing weight of my mother's debt and my destroyed career.
"Okay," I'd whispered. "I'll stay."
He'd reached for my hand—tentative, testing. I'd let him pull me closer. And when his other hand had come up to cup my face, when I'd seen the question in his eyes, I'd made another catastrophic choice.
I'd kissed him back.

Her family looked down on him, and even she herself said coldly: “You’re not worthy of being my husband.”

Thorne said nothing.
He merely raised his hand, gently pressing his bride’s forehead.
In an instant, the chaos in her eyes faded. Holy light surged from beneath the church, shooting into the sky.
The world’s only candidate for the Saintess, blessed with holy power, slowly opened her clear eyes before him.

On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.
“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.
Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:
“Until you die!”
With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.
But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.
My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.
I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!
