Introduction

For nineteen years, Avery Hale has been invisible—just a worthless, oversized, wolfless girl surviving on a scholarship at Ravenhood Academy. Tossed away by her own parents and raised by her struggling aunt, she learned early on that love wasn't meant for someone like her.

Until the Red Moon Ceremony changes everything.

Fate plays the ultimate cruel trick, pairing her with Lucas Ravengod: the cold-hearted Lycan prince, hockey captain, and the secret crush she’s loved from afar. But her dream turns into a nightmare when Lucas rejects her in front of the entire pack.

Unable to sever a bond on a red moon night, she is forced to stay tethered to the cold hearted beast who broke her heart until the next full moon, Avery must survive relentless bullying, toxic rivalries, and dangerous pack politics.

But as the full moon approaches, Lucas’s cold exterior begins to crack—and he realizes the girl he pushed away might be the only temptation he can’t resist.

Chapter 1

I held my tray tight in both hands and kept my eyes glued to the floor.

It convinced me that if I didn't look at anyone, they would not be drawn to look at me, too. That was my strategy, and on most days it worked just well enough to keep me from crying in public.

With a sigh, I took three careful steps toward an empty table in the far corner with my chosen decoy, where it waited near the trash cans. No one ever sat over there, which made it the safest spot in the room, and my feet hurried towards it.

It had to be why I did not see the foot that kicked out from under a nearby table until my sneaker caught the hard edge of the chair leg and I stumbled forward.

The tray I had held with so much care flew out of my grip, and my plate of spaghetti poured onto the hard tile floor, splashing red sauce and cold noodles all over my uniform skirt and gray hoodie.

The result was a loud crash that echoed through the room, and the cafeteria went silent for half a second before the room exploded into laughter.

“Watch where you're rolling, fatty,” someone shouted from the varsity table.

“Look at that. The floor ATE better than she did.” Another voice yelled.

I shut my eyes tight, wishing I could shut out all the noise in the same manner as my face burned with a heat so intense I thought my skin would melt right off. I dropped to my knees in embarrassment, and my hands shook as I tried to scoop the mess back onto the tray, the red sauce staining my fingers.

It was all some dirty, embarrassing ordeal, but I couldn't just leave it there. If a staff member caught me making a mess, I could get a demerit.

One demerit was a problem because three demerits meant losing my scholarship.

Losing my scholarship meant having to go back to my parents, when I would sooner swallow broken glass than return to being with them.

“Leave it, Avery,” a mean voice sneered from above me.

I looked up and saw Chloe West standing over me, her arms crossed over her white designer sweater as she stared me down with a hawkish look terrifying enough to make me decide the floor looked better.

"You're making a scene, as usual," she continued, tossing her pretty blonde hair over her shoulder. "Nobody wants to watch a wolfless freak crawl around on the floor."

"I'm just cleaning my food," I mumbled, keeping my voice as low as possible, while hoping she wouldn't hear enough of my answer to use my own words to tear me open with her usual sarcastic cruelty.

What I dreaded happened, nevertheless.

"You don't need any more food anyway," she said with a cold smirk.

A few girls standing behind her giggled, and I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted copper, which was all I could do to keep myself from attempting a meaner reply. That would only make things worse, as girls like Chloe always had the school's backing.

I finished wiping up the worst of the sauce with a napkin and pushed myself off the floor. My knees throbbed from hitting the hard tiles, but I ignored the pain. I tossed the ruined food into the trash can and walked toward the exit as fast as my legs could carry me.

Laughter followed me all the way down the hallway, and I hurried into the nearest girl's bathroom and locked myself inside a stall. There, I leaned my back against the plastic door and let out the breath I had been holding before looking down at my uniform.

The stain was huge, spread across the front of my sweater and skirt like a giant red bruise.

I pulled some paper towels from the dispenser, soaked them in cold water, and started scrubbing at the fabric, but minutes of scrubbing only transformed the stain into a wet, pink smear.

"Great," I whispered to myself. "Just great."

I let the paper towels fall in disappointment and then looked at my reflection in the mirror above the sink. The reflection staring back at me looked tired, with dark circles under my eyes, full cheeks, and a body that didn't fit into the sleek, athletic standard of the Northern Pack.

At nineteen, I was still wolfless, and that was bad enough.

Teenagers in Ravenhood shifted for the first time when they turned sixteen, and immediately found their wolves, joined pack runs, and learned how to fight.

Three years on, I had nothing.

No wolf spirit, no strength, and no speed.

To my parents, that made me a defective broken product.

They tolerated me until I turned eighteen, hoping every day that my wolf would awaken. When it didn't, they packed my bags, drove me to my aunt's small, run-down house on the edge of the pack territory, and dropped me off.

My aunt was kind, but she was poor and struggled just to pay for basic groceries. Getting this scholarship to Ravenhood Academy was my only chance at having a real future. For myself and the woman who helped raise me.

My thoughts returned to my reflection in the mirror, and I looked down and wiped a stray tear off my cheek with the back of my hand.

I hated crying. It didn't fix anything, and certainly didn't make people stop being cruel, so I smoothed down my wet hoodie, picked up my backpack, and slipped out the back door of the main building.

I needed air, and I needed to be somewhere away from the hallways.

My path led me towards the outdoor sports complex at the edge of the campus, where the air was crisp and chilly, a blatant reminder of the start of the autumn season.

In the distance, the loud clatter of ice skates and hockey sticks echoed from the outdoor rink, and my feet moved toward the bleachers automatically. I went and sat on the top row, pulling my hood up over my head to hide my face and my stained clothes.

Down on the ice, the academy's hockey team was in the middle of a practice session, and he stood right in the centre.

Everyone knew him well.

Lucas Ravengod.

I should've taken the damn bus.

But no, I had to walk through the park at midnight like an idiot. Now I've seen something I can't unsee—a massive black wolf tearing apart three men, then shifting into the hottest guy I've ever laid eyes on.

Kieran Vaughn. Wealthy lawyer, werewolf, and apparently, he thinks I'm his mate.

Here's the problem: I don't do relationships. I definitely don't do supernatural things. I absolutely don't do rich guys who think they can control my life just because their inner wolf has decided I smell like home.

When hunters start targeting me to get to him, Kieran drags me into his pristine penthouse for "protection." Now I'm living with a man who looks at me like I'm his last meal, whose touch sets my skin on fire, and who's barely holding onto his control.

He says everyone he loves dies. I say that's not my problem except it is because I'm falling for this broken, dangerous man and his beast.

And in his world? Love will get you killed.

⬥ Keegan ⬥
I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.

But a year into our marriage, I began to notice something — a pattern.

Lucas's sexual appetite was intense — he wanted me almost every night. Yet every single month, he arranged a solo trip to send me away. I told myself it was his way of spoiling me.

Then a message arrived from someone called Sweet An.

Do you really know your husband?

From that day on, my life filled with shadows.

I suspected my husband of having an affair.

When Lucas and I made love, something felt wrong — his body too large, too much, like something I couldn't explain.

I heard sounds during sex — animal sounds, like something feral had crawled into bed with us.

My best friend Mia said: "There are men sick enough to let dogs fuck their wives."

The family doctor, Daisy, told me: "You could never stay by Lucas's side forever. Your background doesn't make you worthy of being his wife. Do you understand?"

I went looking for whoever had been tearing my marriage apart. I fought to win my husband back.

But the deeper I searched, the larger the secret grew — something far darker hiding beneath this supposed betrayal.

Does Lucas truly love me?

And why, out of everyone in the world, did he choose to marry me?

"Eyes up here," he said.

My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.

I found myself molded to Lex's will, my feet irresistibly following the dance steps.

The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.

The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.

I soon found myself lost in his arms.

When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.

The ballroom fell silent.

Was he about to kiss me?
