Introduction

Hazel Pemberton failed the only exam that mattered, so her parents shipped her to her aunt's dusty bookstore to recover in peace. Peace lasts one night. Past midnight the shelves fold back into an apothecary that shouldn't exist, and a dragon built like a doorway walks in expecting a potion nobody brewed. Her aunt is gone. The note explaining why is in Hazel's own handwriting , and Hazel never wrote it.

Now she has until dawn to brew a potion she's never made, a customer who won't leave without what he's owed, and a growing certainty that her failed exam and her aunt's disappearance are the same secret wearing two faces. She just has to figure out which face is lying before the debt collects itself.

Chapter 1

Hazel's POV

My phone buzzed for the fourth time before I finally picked it up.

"You didn't fail because you're bad at magic," Mom said, the second I said hello. No hi. No how's the shop. Straight to the thing neither of us wanted to talk about. "The proctor probably just had it out for you."

"Sure." I pressed the phone against my ear with my shoulder and kept dusting a shelf of paperbacks that didn't need dusting. "That's probably it."

"Hazel."

"I'm fine, Mom. I've got the shop covered. Aunt Beatrix just stepped out."

That part was true, at least. Beatrix had grabbed her coat an hour ago, said something about needing a few things for a potion, and told me to lock up if she wasn't back by ten. It was almost midnight now. I hadn't let myself think too hard about that yet.

"Call if you need us to come get you," Mom said. "It's a two-hour drive, but we'll do it."

Two hours. Like I was twelve and scared of a thunderstorm.

"I won't need that." My voice came out sharper than I meant it to. "I can handle a bookstore for one night."

She sighed the specific sigh she saved for when she thought I was being stubborn instead of fine. I hung up before she could try again, because if she kept talking, I was going to say something true, and true wasn't a place I wanted to go tonight. Not after the exam. Not after watching the proctor's face go pale and careful right before he told me I'd failed, like he was handling something breakable.

I set the phone face-down on the counter and told myself the shaking in my hands was just cold.

The bookstore was quiet in the way old buildings get quiet , settling, creaking, breathing almost. I'd always liked that about it. Beatrix's shop smelled like paper and dried lavender, and the shelves went crooked in places nobody had ever bothered to fix. I used to think it was the coziest place in the world when I was little.

I didn't feel little tonight. I felt like someone had left me in charge of something I didn't understand, on the one night everything felt too big to hold.

Something clicked behind me.

Not a loud click. A small one, precise, like a key turning in a lock that had been waiting all night to be used. I turned around, expecting nothing , a book falling, a draft under the door , and found the shelf against the back wall sliding sideways on its own.

I froze.

The shelf didn't groan like old wood should. It groaned like something waking up. The paperbacks on it tipped forward and slid off, but they didn't hit the floor , they just weren't there anymore by the time I looked down, like the air had eaten them. Where the shelf had been, a second wall was sliding into place, and it wasn't full of books at all.

It was full of jars.

Dozens of them, glass and dark glass and glass that didn't look like glass, glowing faint colors I didn't have names for , green like a bruise, blue like the inside of a flame, one that pulsed slow and gold like it was breathing. Labels curled around each jar in handwriting I recognized. Beatrix's handwriting. Words I didn't recognize at all.

I backed up until my spine hit the front counter.

"Okay," I said out loud, to nobody, because saying it out loud made it feel less like I was losing my mind. "Okay, that's , that's fine. That's a thing that's happening."

Another shelf turned. Then another, all down the far wall, wood folding into itself like paper origami built by someone with far too much patience, cabinets opening where there hadn't been cabinets a minute ago. A cauldron , an actual cauldron, black and dented and clearly used , rose up out of the floor where the reading rug used to be, like the building had just remembered it existed.

My first thought was that someone had broken in. That didn't hold up for more than a second , nobody breaks into a bookstore to redecorate it into something out of a story. My second thought was worse. My second thought was that this was exactly the kind of thing the exam board would point to if they ever needed proof that something was wrong with how I saw the world. That maybe I really had cracked, the way they'd been careful and quiet about implying.

I should have called Mom back right then. I know that now. I had the phone right there under my hand, and some small, sensible part of me was already reaching for it.

I didn't pick it up.

I didn't want to be the girl who called her mother because a bookshelf moved. I didn't want to hand anyone else a reason to look at me the way that proctor had looked at me , careful, worried, like I was a problem waiting to happen. So instead I stood very still with my back against the counter and told myself I could figure this out on my own, the same way I told myself the exam had just been bad luck.

The shop finished changing around me. Where there had been rows of novels, there were now shelves of ingredients I couldn't name, and where the little reading nook used to be, a heavy black table sat waiting, empty, like it knew something I didn't.

Then the front door slammed open so hard the bell above it didn't ring , it screamed, one high metal shriek before it snapped clean off its hook and skittered across the floor.

I spun around, heart slamming, hands finally moving on their own to grab the nearest thing I could find , a brass candlestick, useless, stupid, better than nothing.

Cold air rolled in off the street. The streetlight outside the window used to reach almost to the register. It didn't anymore. Something had stepped into the doorway and swallowed all of it , a shape too tall for the frame, shoulders too wide, standing so still that for one full second I thought maybe I'd imagined it too, like the shelves, like the jars, like everything else my mind wasn't supposed to be able to make up.

It wasn't imagined.

It took one step forward, and the whole floor shuddered under it like the building had forgotten how to hold that much weight in one place.

I didn't run. I couldn't make my legs remember how.

The candlestick was shaking so hard in my grip that it clinked against the counter, tiny and pathetic and loud in a room that had gone completely silent except for the sound of something enormous, breathing, right in front of me.

He grabbed my hair and dragged me downstairs. His grip on my hands and feet ached terribly. I sobbed and wept, silent tears streaming down my face. I was powerless to break free, my left hand clutching my broken right wrist.

He was a beast inhabiting this mansion, inflicting inhuman torture on my poor soul. He had created a living hell for me, this pitiful girl, within his castle.

On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.

“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.

Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:

“Until you die!”

With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.

But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.

My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.

I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!
